Objects and Activities

Charitable Purposes

The saving of lives.

Advancement of education.

Activities Through volunteers we advance the education of communities around the saving of lives. We deliver training in first aid, surf lifesaving and vocational qualifications.

Achievements and Performance As the only club of its kind in Scotland, Dunbar Surf Life Saving Club (DSLSC) is providing a unique and highly commended innovative approach toward the targets to reduce the Scottish drowning statistics. This is delivered through a community based solution that develops education, first aid knowledge and surf lifesaving skills whilst improving the health of young people and loca! communities.

The Club has delivered Surf Life Saving GB Rescue awards, surf lifesaving education, vocational qualifications and skills awards over 400 people in communities mostly in Dunbar but also throughout Scotland. All of these people now have the skills to be safe in the water and deal with emergency situations.

DSLSC is affiliated to our national bodies - Surf Life Saving GB and the Scottish Surfing Federation. We are also commended in the Water Safety Scotland National Water Safety Forum recommendation as contributing to national drowning reduction targets.

DSLSC is an inclusive club, open to all ages and abilities. Our current membership boasts individuals from a range of backgrounds, experiences and ages - from seasoned surfers and open water swimmers to novices and youngsters.

Financial Review

Reserves Policy At this time Dunbar Surf Life Saving Club does not hold any reserves.

Plans for the Future In 2025-26 we plan to continue our club educational work, grow our volunteer and club member base and continue our Belhaven Bay Community Life Saving Beach Patrol Service.

The aims are to:

Registered Charity SCO47262

Belhaven Bay is a bay beach in Dunbar, East Lothian. It is a favourite with water sports enthusiasts, and beach users from all over Scotland. The beach is within John Muir Country Park which is a key destination. East Lothian Council monitors and surveys visitors. The coast is the most popular place for visitors with 62% taking a trip there. Most of those who go to Belhaven Bay do so for surfing or swimming. Dunbar is home to a large number of surfers and locals regularly swim in the sea. Despite this there are no paid lifeguards on the beach.

Scotland's Drowning Prevention Strategy 2018 - 2026 evidences that education and recreation should be prioritised through drowning reduction strategies. More people die in drowning accidents in Scotland than in road cycling accidents, and the bulk of these are at the coast. There is a need for an increase in prevention of drowning education which is specific to Scotland; drowning in Scotland is higher per capita, than in England, Wales and Northern Ireland combined.

Chairman’s Report –

Please see attached for full report with highlights noted below:

Felt that due to new committee and despite being on a steep learning curve there has been many positives to come from season 2024.

Treasurer Report,

Please see attached for full report, items highlighted were:

Safeguarding Report

Fundraising Report,

Our big event was a huge success and elt running it on the last date of the first session went well. The income that is trickling in from people buying the DSLSC club merchandise is also a big bonus and we need to keep pushing this.

who has been supporting the fundraising team is experienced in identifying grant funding, she is happy to keep doing this. We need to look at this more in 2025 when we can identify where the funds are needed as we can’t make applications without this information dvised she would be resigning from the committee and we would need to find someone to take the lead from 2025.

Secretary Feedback/Report,

We have so far used existing forms and documents since took over in 2022, these now need to be reviewed to sit better with information we are required to hold now the club has evolved, or o speak to t SLSGB and ask for examples of what they send out. We have started using SPOND which everyone agrees works well but we could probably use it bette to speak to about this for 2025. Everyone felt the session dates & times worked well this year and as we have had no feedback from parents we will continue with this format for 2025. It was felt across the board that getting information out earlier would benefit everyone, session dates to be shared no later than January 2025. coped with the membership alone over the past couple of years, if we are to double the membership, some assistance will be required to support the increase in numbers.

Club Roles Past & Present – all agreed by the committee at the AGM 2024
