## **Objectives and activities**

ASSOCIATION OF AFRICANS IN SCOTLAND (AAS) is a non-partisan, non-racial and a non-religious organization, with the sole aim of eroding the gap between the Government of Scotland and the ethnic minority group of African descent on socio-political issues and other relevant matters as may arise.

AAS intend to act as an advocacy group for African ethnic minority persons resident in Scotland. Advocacy in this sense, are activities which aim to influence decisions within political, economic, social systems and institutions. In addition:

Within political context: We intend to influence political decisions and government policies that impact the African minority, without any political inclination or seeking election to public office.

Within a social care context: We seek to provide a source for advice that will benefit people of African minority who are in difficulty (primarily in the context of disability, immigration, health care, employment, legal advice, finance and mental health issues).

In the context of inclusion: We seek to be of benefit to African minority resident in Scotland by reconnecting people who have become isolated. We also intend to provide English lectures to resident Africans who do not speak English fluently to aid seamless communication and integration within the larger society.

To this end we intend to assist in ensuring government policies as they concern Africans

resident in Scotland are disseminated to grass root Africans, as well as feedback the government on the impact of these policies on the African minority.

The benefit of this is ensuring that as an ethnic minority group, our views are considered by the Scottish government, thus fostering effective collaboration between the government and African minority.

## **Structure, governance, and management**

Type of governing document

AAS is governed by its deed of trustee document called AAS Constitution. This document was put together by AAS Board of Trustees and is a dynamic and live working document.

AAS constitution document is the written statement that sets out its purpose, structure, and description of how the Association will operate. Upon admission to AAS as a member, a copy of the constitution is officially made available with instructions to always ensure strict adherence to the constitution.

## **Achievements and performance**

The association was unable to achieve goals agreed from previous AGM due to financial constraints. The plan to fund raise and source for grants was severely hampered by bereavements within families of key and trustee members.

The lack of funding coupled with very low membership meant that most of our members were heavily involved in supporting our bereaved members who have lost relatives and had to travel to Africa for funerals.

Attendance at meetings was very low in the year 2023 due to challenges highlighted above. It will be fair to say that AAS did not operate in 2023.

## **Financial review**

No financial aid was received by the Association in the year 2023. The Association is entirely dependent on the monthly dues paid by its members.

Breakdown of the financial year as of January 31st, 2024 below;
