Objectives and activities

Charitable purposes

To advance education and extend awareness of, and interest in, all branches of astronomy in the Borders in Scotland.

Summary of the main activities in relation to these objects

Our activities are all about increasing the knowledge of our members and outside groups to include school children and amateur photographers, in all astronomy related activities. Activities include viewing sessions, equipment knowledge, talks by professional astronomers, talks given to local primary school children and girl guides, organised trips to observatories and many more.

APPENDIX 1

Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period © Monthly meetings between September and April inclusive have been held in a combination of Zoom and physical presence in a local Peebles church hall with excellent talks by professional astronomers on a multitude of subjects. The Zoom meetings have been joined in by welcomed friends and kindred clubs and societies in the Borders. We have an active internal Development Committee keeping the main Committee and members alike appraised on upcoming events by way of a monthly Society Newsletter and/or emails, the latter in particular advising viewing sessions at short notice dependent on weather conditions. There have been occasional software and guidance problems, since resolved, with our fully computerised Skyvision 24” telescope allowing several viewing sessions over the winter months with some excellent astronomical sights to include planets, nebulas and galaxies. To engage the public some of our members took their own telescopes plus others belonging to the Society to a local river park in Peebles inviting passers by to view what could be seen in the night sky. This has always been very well received and the plan is to continue.

Financial review Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves The Trustees policy is to maintain a minimum of £500 at the year end which is more than sufficient to cover normal running costs, projected commitments and unexpected expenditure. Reserves at the end of the current financial year amounted to £931, more than covering our target range. Details of any deficit Positive balance at year end as described above following a SURPLUS of £104 for the trading year. Donated facilities and services (if any)
