OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Charitable Purposes
In our society, most animals are denied a peaceful life and death. At the Maggie Fleming Animal Hospice and The Karass Sanctuary we hope to show that there is another way.
We provide end of life care to terminally-ill companion and farmed animals so that they don’t have to spend their final days alone and when the time comes, they die with dignity and with a friend by their side. We take responsibility for providing quality care that is comforting and compassionate. We take care of their needs so that they don’t have to worry about being thirsty, hungry, in pain, or lonely and they can spend their last few days, weeks or months in peace knowing that they don’t have to face the end on their own.
We also encourage and support people to do end of life care for their own family members to help keep families together and believe in responsibility until the end.
No matter what shape we come in - dog, chicken, sheep, pig, cow, human - in life and when it comes to the end, we all want the same things: to feel safe, secure and comfortable, and to be free from worry, anxiety, pain and fear.
At The Maggie Fleming Animal Hospice and The Karass Sanctuary we aim to provide a life of quality and a dignified, peaceful death for our friends.
Public Awareness
In order to raise awareness of the purpose of The Maggie Fleming Animal Hospice and The Karass Sanctuary and raise funding for the development of the hospice, the documentary, Crannog, by an independent director has been shown at a number of international and national film festivals. This has resulted in a number of awards and promoted the work of the hospice. A documentary for German and French TV that was commissioned and shot during the summer of 2020 has been shown several times on German, Austrian and French TV. The background to the formation and the setting up and running of the of the Maggie Fleming Animal Hospice and The Karass Sanctuary, together with individual resident histories, have been published in a book written by Alexis Fleming entitled “No Life Too Small”. This has been published in several languages and been well received at several Book Festivals. Social media is also being used progressively to raise awareness of the Charity and its work and purpose.
Volunteers and Donors.
2023/2024 saw the establishment of a team of volunteers coming on set days on a regular basis carrying out specific cleaning and feeding functions. This team is of enormous help in carrying out essential routine chores which contribute so much to the welfare and well-being of the animals in our care. We are also indebted to everyone who gave of their time and effort in fund raising and to all those who contributed financially in helping with the work of the Charity.
We are extremely grateful to all those who collected food and bedding for the charity, including private individuals, other charities, local shops and businesses, and also to those manufacturers who supplied us with bulk dog and cat food through the year.
Reserves Policy
We will always attempt to have at least one full year’s budget for food and veterinary care in the bank to ensure that we can always provide for our residents.
Developments During the Current Year
The year saw several developments to the Sanctuary grounds. This has been the construction of fencing, ground works and buildings to expand accommodation for dogs and chickens.
The large dog area was expanded to include man-made hills for the two Spanish Mastiffs so that they can replicate their natural behaviour as lookout dogs in their native country.
Pathways have been expanded in order to make movement of feed for sheep and pigs easier in winter in those areas where mud has been a big problem.
More hard standing has been put in to accommodate extra kennels and also in the chicken coop area to minimise winter mud in the existing chicken units. Further improvements to existing facilities for visitors and volunteers have been made with a building intended for use as a Visitor Information Centre/Shop has been built in the car park area. This will provide a separate facility for visitors to the Hospice and Sanctuary and provide information about the Hospice and Sanctuary and enable the sale of merchandise on site, as well as on-line.
Plans for 2024/2025.
Plans for 2024/2025 include further improvements to fences, paths and drainage to provide improved recreation areas for dogs. In addition, more kennels and runs will be built to cater for more vulnerable dogs.
Signed on behalf of the Trustees:

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of The Maggie Fleming Animal Hospice
I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2024which are set out on page 05.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities
Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the 2006 Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner’s statement
My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
Independent examiner’s statement
In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention
-
which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
-
to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations
-
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 9 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations
have not been met, or
- to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
