TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT
Structure, governance and management
The charity is governed by a constitution.
Charity trusteeship is open to any person aged 16 or over who subscribes to the objects of the organisation and wishes to see them fulfilled. Any person applying to be a trustee must sign a written application. The application will be considered at the next board meeting. The board may refuse admission and must notify each applicant promptly of its decision to admit or refuse.
Objectives and activities
The objects are the advancement of heritage and culture through restoring, reinstating, preserving and presenting to the public in their context the murals painted by Alexander Runciman in the apse of St Patrick’s Church, Edinburgh.
The main activities in relation to these objects are discussions with art restorers and the art departments of the Universities of Edinburgh, Northumbria and Oxford and local community groups to prepare a restoration plan and fulfilling this restoration plan.
Achievements and performance
In the course of the last year the following work was undertaken:
-
An environmental report was commissioned to ascertain the effect of exposing the ceiling mural following the removal of covering layers of paint currently protecting it from the environment. We wish to know whether we need to protect the exposed painting from ultra-violet light and moisture in the atmosphere.
-
Further tests have been undertaken by experienced conservators in order to provide a detailed estimate of the costs involved in removing the paint at present covering the mural. In the course of this work it has been judged that at the present time it would be too risky to proceed with the restoration until further scientific advancements have been made.
As a consequence the Trust will concentrate on how best to display the pendant paintings and await future developments which will enable the Ascension mural to be safely uncovered.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT
I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 August 2025 and the notes to the accounts which are set out on pages 7 to 10.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the 2006 Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner’s statement
My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Independent examiner’s statement
-
In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
-
to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations
-
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 9 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations
have not been met, or
- to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
This report is made solely to the charity’s Trustees, as a body, in accordance with regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. My work has been undertaken so that I might state to the charity’s Trustees those matters I am required to state to them in an Independent examiner's report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, I do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the charity and the charity’s Trustees as a body, for my work or for this report.
