General Introduction

Skye Youth Pipe Band is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO). The Band is made up of school age pipers and drummers from the Skye area. The Committee is comprised of parent helpers and junior representatives of the Pipe Band, in close communication with the tutors. All parents are welcome to become members and are encouraged to be as involved as possible. All Trustees are appointed on a voluntary basis from within the membership. All youngsters and Pipe Major are ‘Performing Members’ and supporters are ‘Non-Performing Members’. The Pipe Major and Drum Tutor are responsible for the tuition and musical content and decisions about Band events. The Pipe Major will accompany them to events if he can, although we rely heavily on his goodwill, as this is not part of his official role as Piping Tutor.

Our annual membership fees were waived for 2020/21 for all Performing Members due to the Covid outbreak. They have since been reinstated at £20 per child and £10 per sibling. Under circumstances of hardship, this can be waived by the Pipe Major on his discretion. NonPerforming Members (i.e. parents) are responsible for fundraising, help with transport, managing stock of kilt uniforms, and general administration.

The stated purposes of the Band, as detailed in the constitution, are:

‘The advancement of heritage and culture through the encouragement and promotion of Highland bagpipes and drumming for young people aged up to 18 years in Skye and the community. The Skye Youth Pipe Band facilitate and teach bagpipe and drum playing by organising practices, classes and public performances for young people aged up to 18 years in the Skye and Lochalsh area’.

The pipers are taught by Pipe Major lan Ruari Finlayson, and drummers are taught by Hugh MacCallum. Both are the Skye schools’ instrumental tutors employed by HighLife Highland. The Band has two sections, the ‘Youth Band’, made up of older, more experienced performers, and the ‘Development Band’ who are upcoming pipers and drummers working towards their Youth Band membership. Uniforms are lent to performing members when they attain the Youth Band, and must be returned to the Band when they leave school or leave the Band at 18 years of age.

Report for the year 2024/2025

The 2024 summer holidays were filled, as is tradition, performing at lots of community events:

----- Start of picture text -----
Committee Members and parents showed grit and determination fundraising for the band’s very
first trip abroad to Italy for September 2024. We cannot thank our local businesses and charities
for their continued support and generous donations that helped make the trip happen, not to
mention the volunteers who supervised on the trip; without which the trip would not have been
possible. Thank you toiM (emergency translator and tour guide!),

Thank you to | | | for designing and creating our Barga trip poster!

The band was invited to perform at the Scottish Festival in Barga, Tuscany. Barga hasa rich history with the West Coast of Scotland that reaches as far as our very own band thanks 0 iii 2se es 0 ee The Scottish Festival celebrates the Italian immigrants who came to Scotland and remained close to their roots creating a truly deep connection between Barga and Scotland.

The band had a strict itinerary to adhere to in rather toasty conditions, entertaining the crowds who travelled far and wide. Well done everyone, you did Skye proud!

Once home, there were whispers of a return trip in September 2025! Fundraising for Barga round two, went from strength to strength with lots of busking, fantastic stalls, rafflesand pop-up cafes. None of which would have been possible without the generous support, donations and more valuably, time, from our band parents, band members and committee members —not to mention our fantastic communities all around Skye! Thank you all for your support!

On the 31° of May 2025 a very dreich Portree Gala Day was kicked off by a soggy SYPB, but by the end of their performance the sun popped out to dry us all up! A great team manned the fundraising stall to raise money for the band’s next trip to Barga. Lots of donations were given and lots of fun was had.

Roll up! Roll up! Lucky Dips, Lucy Spins and Lucky Bogies??

June was a busy month with invitations to perform at local events resulting in many fun outings! To kick off the ToraFest2025, the band performed at the Torabhaig Distillery. The band was made very welcome and had a great afternoon performing and exploring the grounds around the distillery....1 was assured that no drams were sampled!

Portree High School Prize Giving ceremony was opened by the SYPB where a very special and much deserved ‘thank you’ was given to our one ina million, FY to show the High School’s appreciation for all of his dedication to our children and local communities.

|

The 21% of June marked the 25"" anniversary of the raising of the Durinish Stone in Dunvegan. Dunvegan Community Council kindly invited us along to perform and we were made very welcome. It also marked the very first performance for four of our development drummers who did a fantastic job! It was also a gloriously sunny day which was an added bonus! a

Last practice before the summer holidays was had on the 24" of June. Our development pipers and drummers were invited to come along to join in with practice with the senior band members. It is always fantastic to see so many young people taking part in the SYPB - i are going to be kept busy! Not to mention | | Of our smashin’ wee ‘Tuner Extraordinaire’. Thank you so much for continuing to volunteer your time ...and ears... to keeping our pipes in tune!

In the evening the band opened a special event which welcomed a wonderful choir visiting all the way from New England, USA, who performed with our local Island Chorus.

For the start of July 2025, the SYPB was invited back to perform at the Gairloch Highland Gathering where they once again had the talented MM as their acting Drum Major. As a huge thank you to a support with keeping the band in check over the past few years, HM gifted him his very own SYPB tie!

Here’s to the end of another event filled year! Thank you to all who werea part of it!
