Charity Trustees

Our board is composed of doctors who have trained at the University of Edinburgh, several of whom were supported in their applications to study medicine by the REACH program which supports state school students in applying for medicine. This program inspired our chair, to found ‘You Can Be A Doctor’. Our trustees now work in hospitals across both Scotland and England.

Trustees’ Report for period beginning 1[st] April 2024

The trustees are pleased to present their annual report together with financial statements from the period 1[st] April 2024 to 31[st] March 2025.

Structure, Governance and Management

Constitution

The charity is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered on 13th of June 2016. It has a two-tier structure, consisting of Members and Board of Trustees.

Trustee Recruitment and Appointment

Trustees are appointed in accordance with the constitution.

Objectives and Activities

Charitable Purposes

Our organisation’s purpose is to encourage young people from Scottish state schools to study medicine, and to support them with their applications.

Activities

We run a variety of events throughout the calendar year targeting pupils from various year groups. Following the online transition during the pandemic, we are now providing more of our events in person across Scotland.

UCAT Course

We are passionate about providing free support for the UCAT examination, which makes up a significant part of the medical school application. UCAT courses provided by external organisations can cost several hundreds of pounds, and our free course hopes to ensure students who cannot afford this have support.

We ran three sessions in 2024:

A total of 25 pupils attended our sessions in total. These sessions involved provision of a UCAT handbook, worked examples of each section using a PowerPoint led by our YCBAD team and then small group working through several examples. Feedback as shown below as very positive- of those who responded to our Su￿ey, >90 % found our sessions helpful with some of their feedback shown below. Do you feel more confident about sitting the UCAT after taking part in this program? 12 responses •Yes 8.3% 91.7% Why/Why not? 12 responses i found It incredibly helpful that we vient through the questions al the end and dlscussed why ansbyers were correciiincorrect I learned very useful tips and got to practice more questions They volunteers were so nice and helped me calm down I made me realise thal I was stutying the right techniques it made me aware for the pitfalls l used io fall for and know rnore aboui how to answer questlons I learned some Ilps on how lo effectlvety manage my ilme and answer questions. ere very kind and supportive I realised how behind l am in the UCAT and how Iruly bad l am at the questions $0 I will jusl practise morel rt helped me gauge my strengths and weaknesses Personal Statement Review (September 2024) Our personal statement service continues to provide support to pupils across Scotland. This was advertised on our website, social media accounts and via our

mailing list. Volunteers were recruited via our website & internal volunteer bank and advice on marking (including a standardized marking format) was distributed.

Our team reviewed personal statements for 20 pupils, with feedback provided by two independent reviewers. This involved a ‘markup’ of the personal statement, as well as completion of our standardised feedback form. We will be reviewing our format for this support in 2025-2026 as the personal statement is being removed from applications.

Mock Interviews (November 2024)

In 2024, we held two full day sessions of mock interviews – one in Glasgow, and one in Edinburgh. A total of 74 pupils applied to attend our interview sessions. Due to limited capacity, applicants were chosen based on their fulfilment of our criteria and according to SIMD decile and school ranking.

We interviewed 28 students in Glasgow, and 30 in Edinburgh. There were some pupils unable to attend due to significant inclement weather on our Edinburgh date. We continue to utilise our multiple-mini-interview (MMI) format in the delivery of our mock interview sessions. Students who attend these sessions can practice their interview technique as they rotate between several ‘stations’ – testing knowledge, communication skills and critical thinking. They are interviewed by a variety of medical students, junior doctors, and consultants. Feedback from pupils is shown below.

The below responses are to ‘why do you feel more confident’ – there are many answers, all very positive and highlight the benefit of our interview workshop for pupils who would otherwise not be able to practice prior to their interview.

Virtual Work Experience (VWE)

We have written, recorded and now published our virtual work experience programme. This follows the structure previously designed by DWAMSS – using a structured online tutorial format with videos and interactive questions to allow pupils to follow a clinical case. This was filmed in the University of Edinburgh’s clinical skills lab and follows a junior doctor managing two unwell patients on a nightshift. We plan to expand our library of work experience to include more examples of the variety of scenarios junior doctors may face at work, with filming to take place this year. Many pupils struggle to obtain work experience, and we hope our VWE can be used by these pupils to help strengthen their application by showing they have explored what a career as a doctor means.

S1 Programme (All year)

We have developed a program of events targeted at younger secondary school pupils (S1-2) which aim to help develop their interest in medical science and working as a doctor. We have four designed ‘packs’ which can be delivered by any volunteer

attending the school – cardiovascular system, digestive system, an escape room event and a healthcare professionals event. Our goal is to work with the Royal colleges to develop a program where schools can request an event on a certain date, and the colleges assist us in providing a volunteer (a doctor who is a member of the college) to provide one of the requested events at the school.

Careers Fair Attendance

Members of the YCBAD team attend careers fairs across Scotland throughout the year. We receive many requests throughout the year and attend as many schools as is possible for our volunteers alongside their university and medical careers. We continue to use our model skeleton and stethoscopes at careers fayres, to help inspire our students in the study of medicine.

Website Development

Our website has transitioned to a new platform and been entirely redesigned by our board member with an interest in web design. We now have a section called ‘application guide’ which aims to give pupils a stepwise approach to applying to medicine. We still have further pages to add to our website but hope to continue development over the next few years.

Advice Inbox

We continue to promote our advice email - advice@youcanbeadoctor.co.uk - via our website and at all events. Monitored by members of our board, students can email in with any questions or concerns about applying to medicine and receive quick feedback and advice. In this report year, we have received more than fifty messages from pupils, parents and teachers across Scotland looking for advice and support.

Achievements and Performance

We continue to expand our reach across Scotland and are proud of the support we provide to pupils – many of those we have supported are now medical students!

Policy on Reserves

As a charity, we have decided to hold a sum of £250 in reserve.

Our operating costs are quite small, but we feel that this sum would allow us to replace equipment required for our activities if this were to break (such as stethoscopes and CPR models). We feel this amount will be sufficient for our current operating costs. Donated Facilities and Services Our charity is well supported by volunteers from the medical profession across Scotland. Our trustees all operate on a voluntary basis and give their time to help organise and run our events. We are also grateful for the many junior doctors and consultants who volunteer their time to help run our workshops. We are also grateful particularly to Reach Edinburgh all of whom we have worked with closely to deliver events focusing on widening participation. The trustees declare they have approved the trustees, report above. Signatures 0210812025
