ARMADALE SHED
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
FOR THE PERIOD 1 JULY 2024 TO 30 JUNE 2025
GENERAL
We received the keys to our newly refurbished premises at the end of January 2024 and the first few months were spent re-equipping and setting up our workshop.
TRAINING
After all of our new machinery was installed we undertook safety retraining for all of our members. The first eight members benefitted from a training course run by David Young Training and these eight members in turn cascaded the training down to the other Shed members.
Sibbalds Training offered five of our members the opportunity to attend one of their First Aid training courses. This offer was gratefully accepted, particularly as we had recently purchased a defibrillator.
OFFICIAL OPENING
Our official Armadale Shed reopening ceremony was held on the 2 September 2024 and , CEO of Places for People, our landlords, officiated. We were pleased to have the full support of and the rest of his team who accompanied him on the day. Also present were Members of the Scottish Parliament, , local Councillors, Member of Parliament and representatives from all the business and local groups who had contributed to our successful refurbishment of our workshop. Our catering for the event was deemed a great success thanks to Armadale Shed member Sheila and her helpers.
INTERACTION
We continued to participate in the Lothian Men’s Shed Network and gained insight into the problems faced by other Sheds as well as the solutions they had arrived at. However, there is a marked reluctance on the part of the Edinburgh area sheds to take
part in the meetings outside of their own area and this is a problem that the SMSA have undertaken to look into.
Time permitting, we attended the West Lothian Regeneration Committee meetings which kept us up to date with happenings in and around Armadale and also kept us in touch with other local schools, charities and organisations.
TRUSTEES
Trustees from the previous year agreed to maintain their positions and were unanimously voted into office by the Members who were present at the AGM on 16 October 2024. Our Trustees for the period under review were as follows:
was co-opted to the Board of Trustees to provide us with a younger viewpoint and to handle our IT compliance and we extend our thanks to him for accepting this position.
At the conclusion of the previous AGM, intimated that with immediate effect he would be stepping down as Chairman. However, he was willing to remain on the Board of Trustees.
As Chairman, I would like to thank each and every one of the Trustees for their support and dedication over the preceding 12 months.
COMMUNICATION
Throughout the year Trustees regularly sent out emails to members updating them with any changes and plans within the Shed. In addition, we enacted a strategy of a short lunch time update when required of anything of interest to the Members.
During the year we were invited to give a presentation to Members of both Armadale Methodist Church and Armadale Parish Church and these were well received.
A very positive article on Armadale Shed in the winter edition 2024 of the West Lothian Council Bulletin newspaper gave us excellent coverage, particularly as this publication is distributed to every household in West Lothian.
FUNDING
During this period we did not apply for any funding as our bank account remained healthy thanks to the fund raising efforts from the local community after the fire. However, we did received funding from Tesco Stronger Start Fund in the amount of £1000 and this was put towards the purchase of a defibrillator to be available within the Shed premises. Our thanks to for completing this funding application.
In addition, we did receive a very healthy donation of £10 000 from one individual who wishes to remain anonymous and this was greatly appreciated.
SUPPORT
Our biggest supporter is Places for People, who have given us our premises at a nominal rent free for the past nine years. Our lease is up for renewal in 2026 (how time flies!) and we have the fervent hope that our new lease will be as favourable. In addition, they provide logistical and practical support and are very approachable when we wish to do anything new.
We are pleased to continue to receive support from MGM Timbers, Demmaster, Replacement Door Company and a local construction company.
Our Accountants, Lonmay Accountancy Services continued to prepare our accounts for submission to OSCR and their assistance was greatly appreciated.
MEMBERSHIP
Throughout the year we continued to attract members and at the end of June 2025 we had a total of 48 members on our books. Many of our members do not regularly attend the Shed but they continue to be informed of our activities and attend our Xmas function and AGM and thus we manage to keep in touch with them all.
At the end of 2024 we were honored to bestow the position of Honorary Member to , our dedicated wood turning tutor. Regrettably passed away at the end of August 2025 and his presence in the Shed is sorely missed.
ACHIEVEMENTS
As you all may be aware, after we reopened Armadale Shed in May, the Trustees took the decision to concentrate our activities on repaying the community for their tremendous support by giving priority to making items for local charities, schools, not for profit organisations and churches. This we continued to do throughout the year under review.
As the Trustees pledged after the Shed reopened, with the help of you, the Members, we have been able to help many organisations. Some of these are as follows :
Ochilview Care Home Three seater garden bench Bathgate Gala Day Alter their ceremonial guards’ swords Boghall Drop In Centre Three planters for outside their premises Stoneyburn & Bents Future Vision Group Fun Run Medals and winners shields Stoneyburn Nursery Bug House, work table Colinshiel Care Home Two planters Armadale Junior Football Club Four changing room benches Seafield Early Learning Centre Children’s workbench Regimental Association Of Royal Scots Regimental table displays Armadale Primary School Mud kitchen Eastertoun Primary School Sensory drum and wellie stand WL Children First Sensory sand tray Armadale Hub Sensory sand tray
All of the above projects were carried out in addition to the numerous smaller jobs we handled for members of the local community. Amongst other things, these included making bird feeders, bowling club trophies, picture frames, planters, garden benches and a remote control stand.
We feel that we can never totally repay the generosity of the local community, but with the above projects, we have made an excellent start.
Our Dust extraction installation is now up and running, albeit as a temporary measure. However, there is still work to be done to improve the efficiency and operation and these improvements should be complete by the end of 2025.
We briefly considered extending our workshop out towards the container, but after discussion we agreed that this was an impractical idea and that we should concentrate on smaller and more doable projects. Hence we have started to build a separate wood store to the right of the rear steps and this should be completed in the next week or two.
CONCLUSION
We feel that this has been a very successful year and a large part of this is due to the increased willingness on the part of our members to assist with ongoing projects. Without your help Armadale shed would not be what it is today so thanks to you all.

Basis of Independent Examiners Statement
My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.
In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention.
-
1 Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
