Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period

Due to COVID-19 our office was closed and we worked from home until August, 2021 when we started face to face activities following the ease of the lock down.

While working from home we provided support, and lots of skill development training, workshops, online through zoom and teams. All through during the COVID 19, we kept our office open for food banks every Tuesday for people all over Glasgow to come in and collect, and we also delivered food stuffs to vulnerable people at their various homes, and in total we delivered more than 28,000 food parcels to people. Our women group continued their weekly activities online through zoom and teams and we made lots of face masks, donated to people. We also continued with our training such as Health and safety, First aids, Food

hygiene, training delivered with our partners Kelvin College, and we continued with bead making, cookery classes, cloth making workshops etc. We continued to support our service users (communities) through an arrangement of projects aiming to build an empowered, safe and integrated community via online. Our youth group is vibrant with ongoing weekly music and dance training which we held through zoom and teams. These sessions have helped to engage them and keep them busy during the lock down period of COVID-19.

After the Covid-19 lock down, in August we started our face to face activities, with lots of backlog of work to be done especially for our service users who were unable to seek support due to the lock down and poor communication in English language, we experience so much surge from people that needed help and support in one way and the other. All our activities resumed fully in our office including the food bank which was never closed in the first place, and music and arts and craft classes for our young people. We also conducted a Christmas party for the children and our young people from the music group performed at the event which was well attended.

Our women group started face to face activities with their bead making, knitting, crochet, sewing classes etc. Some of our partners like the YWCA also delivered face to face workshops on Empowering Women Pathways. In March, we organised an online international women's day in partnership with Isaro Charity and many women joined us for the event via zoom.

In October 2021, we organised our first annual conference at Whiteinch Center, Glasgow which was very successful with our local MP, counselors and community leaders in attendance.

We still maintained our partnership with various organizations, and we have provided apprenticeships, placements and internships programmes and referrals for both our young people and women and talents have been discovered. Most of them have gained admissions into Universities and colleges and some have gone into paid employment. We still work in partnership with other organisations such as Scottish Refugee Council, Scottish Women Convention, Refugee Women's strategy group, Isaro, African challenge Scotland, Parent Network Scotland, Kelvin College, OXFAM, UNESCO, Refugee Welcome Scotland, University of Glasgow etc to provide training and address issues of violence against women, and also provide referrals and support services through our weekly drop in sessions. We work with Refugee women's strategy group and Scottish refugee council to review policies that affect women from ethnic minorities.

Our drop-in services resumed face to face meeting with people, we continue to provide support to Ethnic Minorities and immigrants living in Knightswood, Scotstoun, Whiteinch , Yoker, Anniesland, Drumchapel and neighboring areas. The drop-in service serves as a platform for community consultation on various topics including Fairer Scotland Consultation, benefits enquiries, job advice, housing, contacts, etc. Our services help to tackle isolation , and we provide a friendly environment where people of various backgrounds and cultures meet, get information and advice and benefit from peer to peer learning. - As part of the service we sign-post our service users to various mainstream services.

Our ESOL classes resumed face to face meetings with the help of our partners, Glasgow Clyde College and this helps to improve the English language and communication skills of our service users.

The charity offered volunteering opportunities to over 12 adults and young people from diverse community backgrounds and this has allowed them to gain access to in-house and external training, gain work experience, improve their confidence and get involved in the community. Volunteers’ roles included administration, bookkeeping, events management, community development, interpretations and support to the drop-in service.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006.

The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (a) to (c) of the Accounts Regulation does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and subsequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Independent examiner’s statement

In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention-

  1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

  2. to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulation, and

  3. to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 8 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations have not been met, or

  4. to which, in myopinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
