GIRLS, SPACE PROJECT MANAGER "Being part of the Girl< Space team means everything to me, its a place which I call home. Since I was young it was my passion to help improve opportunities to girls in my country. Girll Space has made this dream a reality. I strongly believe in the personal social and emotional part of the Girls, Space programme as this is where our girls develop mentally, learn to believe in themselves, get to know their rights and change from having a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. At girls space we are a family, everyone is valued. Through working at Girls, Space not only gives me a job I love but it allows me to support myself and my family financially. Girls. Space is making a great impact in the community and l am excited to see the project grow over the next few years.
GIRLS, SPACE VOCATIONAL TEACHER . As the Girls, Space lead sewing teaching, it is an honour to be part of the team. I love to teach the girls, the new skills and seeing them progress each week. l also enjoy taking on the role as the Girls, Space Mother- being an advisor and mentor to the girls and other staff in the team. Since being employed at Girls, Space It has helped my family financially- with now being able to support all my children's school fees."
GIRLS, SPACE GRADUATE ASSISTANT TEACHER "As a selerted graduate it is such an exciting opportunity for me to be part of the Girls, Space team. By joining the team I'm going to be able to share the knowledge and experience I gained from my own personal experience of the projert to help other teenagers in my community. The Girls, Space project had a big impact on me, the way I feel about myself and my outlook in life- and l am so happy to be involved in a project like this within my community. I come from a very poor family and my mum is mentally ill so this is a life changing opportunity for me to support myself and my family."
202312024 Girls. Space Graduates Our 2023124 cohort of girls graduated in March 2024.Each of the girls who graduated were given their own sewing machine as this was identified as a barrier to those who graduates the earlier years as they did not have the funds to purchase their own machine. This week whilst in Rwanda I was able to go and visit the girls in their communities to see what they have been up to since graduating. It was amazing to see how the girls have developed since leaving Girls, Space. We spent time with each of the girls, their parents and even met some of their clients. They have all set up their own small business, making an income to help support their families- and some on them even helping other vulnerable girls in their communities in how to sew- the ripple effect of the Girls, Space project. One of the graduates was selected into a 6 month internship in the city of Kigali, which is a huge achievement for a local girl in the village.
update We were delighted to add Josianne to our staff team last year, after she herself graduated from the Girls, Space project. was employed as an assistant teacher and has worked closely with (main vocational staffl and has help support teaching the vocational curriculum. Catching up with the staff this trip it has been amazing to hear how has grown in her confidence and now is responsible for teaching certain parts of the curriculum as the lead educator. She ahs added so much value to the staff team. also explained how much thejob has helped both herself and her family. She is now able to purchase the medication her Mother needed for her mental health illness.
Girls. Space Community Engagement Engaging with our local community, and in particular our Girls, families is something which we are extremely passionate about at TISR. We regularly welcome the families to the hub to show case their learning, and to ensure we build relationships with the parents which helps with the attainment and overall impact the project has on the girls.
Next steps for Girls, Space This year we will be increasing our number of participants and working with 20 girls, split into two groups of 10 to allow for personalisation of the project to continue. We will be introducing a l year mentorship programme for our graduates, so they have continued support once graduating. We will be launching our ambassadors programme where our Girls Space participants will be delivering workshops to p617 girls in the local primary schools. Girls, Space staff CPD- we are supporting our local staff to recieve further training to enhance their own development.
