Gourock Schools and Churches Together Trustees’ Annual Report Year ended 31 January 2024

Structure, Governance and Management

Governing Document

GSCT is a SCIO, the purposes and administration of which are set out in its constitution.

Recruitment and Appointment of Trustees

As detailed in the GSCT constitution, charity Trusteeship is open to any state-funded school, Roman Catholic Church, Baptist Church, Episcopal Church or Church of Scotland based or having a parish boundary within Gourock that subscribes to the purposes of the organisation and wishes to see them fulfilled.

Charitable Purposes

To promote social responsibility and awareness by co-ordinating Christian inter-denominational input to agreed curricular activities of pupils, normally aged 5 - 18 years, for the benefit of Gourock's population.

To advance and encourage good citizenship across the community through direct and indirect contribution to the social and religious education of Gourock's young people.

Activities and Achievements

During the year, the Charity continued to support the schools in their post-Covid activities, especially in relation to pupils with great need.

The Trustees were very pleased to be able to support the schools in various ways, including funding to offset costs of community concerts and also funding to provide assistance with mental health and wellbeing projects.

The Trustees were especially pleased to support the schools in two major projects during the year. Firstly, all of the schools were involved in a "Great Scots" project which culminated in a colourful and musical show performed by representatives from all of the schools in Old Gourock and Ashton Parish Church to school-mates, parents, friends and the community. Secondly, all of the schools participated in a wonderful project entitled "Gourock Schools and Churches Against Racism", which included schools working with a local artist to create a stained-glass window and culminated with the window being installed as a fixture in Gourock Station's main public area.

The Trustees continued outreach to the Gourock community by sending a Christmas card to every home in Gourock and through the annual church service, held in Old Gourock and Ashton Parish Church on the first Sunday of Advent, involving both Secondary Schools and all three Primary Schools along with the clergy from all of the Gourock Churches, parents, friends and members of the community.

Trustee Remuneration

No trustee has received any remuneration during the year in their role as Trustee.

Reserves Policy

All of the GSCT's funds are unrestricted. Funding has been achieved via donation with this held in a Virgin Money account which draws a small amount of interest and a current account established during 2019 to remove delays in the distribution of funds. The Trustees' policy is to maintain reserves at around 2-3 months of normal running costs in order to meet commitments and to cover any unexpected expenditure.

Statement of Trustees' Responsibilities

The charity's trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which, on request, must reflect the financial position of the Charity at that time.

This must be done to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005, the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended).

Approved by the Trustees and signed on their behalf,

Chair

It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of independent examiner’s statement

An examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Independent examiner’s statement

In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

  1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements (a) to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation4 of the
