’ APPENDIX 1 Achievements and performance
The Society wishes to record in this report the sad death in October 2024 of its Honorary President and founder member, Dr Melvin Dalgarno. A celebratory event was held in his memory in May 2025.
The Society organised the following events during the year:
-
e Avery successful Greek Evening in October 2024 with music provided by local Greek musicians
-
e In February 2025 a wide-ranging talk on the “Aegean Bronze Age” held both in person and online
-
e In March 2025 a thought-provoking talk and book launch on “Cyprus 1974: Anatomy of an Invasion” also held on a hybrid basis
-
e In March an enthusiastically attended Ceilidh
It proved impossible to find a suitable replacement venue for our regular Easter event in 2025.
The Society was honoured to host visits in October 2024 from the new Consul! General in Manchester whose responsibilities include Scotland, and from the Greek Ambassador in London.
Members had the opportunity to participate in the varied programme of (mostly virtual) talks organised by the Aberdeen and North of Scotland Centre of the Classical Association. Society representatives continued to participate in the Hellenic Alliance of Scotland.
A range of adult classes for Modern Greek were held both online and in person to meet the differing needs of the participants.
The Hellenic School continued its successful operation, delivering Modern Greek classes to up to 40 children of local Greek and other families, supported by expert teachers and assistants. The School also provided a range of other activities for the children, including a Carnival Party, geography workshops, and partnerships with schools in Nottingham and loannina.
Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves
The Society's principal source of income is membership subscriptions, supplemented by modest donations and any surpluses from social events. The policy on reserves is to retain sufficient funds to meet any potential shortfall on the costs of meeting and events, and to provide for any equipment or donation requirements to support Society activities
