Way2Go SCIO

Annual Report of the Trustees

For the Year Ended 5 April 2025

The trustees are pleased to present their report and the accounts of Way2Go SCIO for the year ended 5 April 2025. The accounts have been prepared on a receipts and payments basis, in accordance with accounting regulations for Scottish charities.

Structure, Governance and Management

Way2Go is constituted as Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO), governed by a constitution and registered as a Scottish charity (ref: SC046107) on 5 November 2015. The Charity was previously called Friends of Eyethu Careers Point.

Trustee recruitment and appointment

A voluntary Board of at least 3 Trustees and a maximum of 8 is responsible for the overall governance and direction of Way2Go SCIO. All office bearers retire from office at the end of the next AGM but are eligible for re-appointment. The Trustees may appoint additional members at any time to the Board.

Activities and Achievements

The experience gained with the NGO Where Rainbows Meet proved to be invaluable in that it pointed out the very great challenges existing in post-pandemic South African townships. Whilst there were serious attempts to provide training for young people and adults, the main efforts were concentrated on feeding the huge numbers of people who turned up every day. From Way2Go’s point of view, this meant that there was not the physical or mental energy left over to provide the facilities or the room to deliver any of our workshops. And visits to other NGOs indicated that this was likely to be the case for them as well – the pandemic had stunted their development and provision of basic needs had to be their priority.

As expressed in Way2Go’s 2023 – 2024 Report, circumstances arose which led to consideration of a different strategy, of finding someone with NGO experience who could deliver our services as an African entity, Way2Go Africa. Following my return home, I made contacts with a number of personnel employed by government departments and NGOs and a likely candidate was put forward. Having gained glowing references, I returned to Cape Town. The interview went well, and we started work towards setting up the new South African NGO, developing the branding, and purchasing the requirements for an office.

Annual Report of the Trustees (continued)

For the Year Ended 5 April 2025

However, it became clear during the month that I stayed in Cape Town that Gerard was an uncertain quantity and, whilst expressing dedication and having great ideas, he needed to rest for days. His wife contacted me to advise me that he was very stressed as he had always worked at a high level for large NGOs whose other employees carried out basic duties that Way2Go Africa had to do for itself.

But he seemed to gather himself together. We found a young volunteer who was ready to support him in delivering the workshops. We also found an office complex where we were able to rent a desk, I bought the necessary equipment, 2 laptops and a printer plus stationery and software, and I believed we were all set up. Perhaps a bad sign was that he was unready to practice delivering the workshops, but since his CV and references had indicated that he had a great deal of experience in doing so with other materials, I was ready to believe that he could carry out the project and I returned home after a month.

Sadly, this was not to happen. Way2Go Africa remained unregistered, and he refused to work with an ex-colleague of mine who I knew had the experience required to carry out the basic registrations necessary. His reaction gave me concern about his racist tendencies, as he was of mixed race and my ex-colleague is . Then, whilst he attempted to deliver two programmes of Workshops, he cut down the programme which made it less effective. Another problem was that I received no reports, no feedback forms completed by the trainees or receipts for the expenses incurred. I discovered he did not ask the volunteer for her support after he had told me that she was no longer interested. I believe his mental health meant that he was unable to cope. I also realised I could no longer trust him. I decided that I would reimburse him one last time, to cover any expenses he might have incurred, such as the office/desk rental and petrol. I then finished the relationship.

The experience made me realise that what we were trying to do was impossible. It would need a permanent presence of Way2Go UK in South Africa, and this was both too expensive and too personally demanding.

Financial Review

Receipts and payments during the year are set out in the statement on page 6. Income of £2,954 arose from donations. Expenditure totalled £3,600 leading to a deficit of £646 for the year.

The trustees have decided to close the SCIO and all funds were expended before the year-end.

Report of the Independent Examiner

To the Trustees of Way2Go SCIO

I report on the accounts of Way2Go SCIO (the charity) for the year to 5 April 2025, which are set out on pages 6 to 7.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of independent examiner's statement

My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Independent examiner's statement

In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention

  1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

  2. to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations, and

  3. to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 9 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations

have not been met, or

  1. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
