Structure Governance & Management

Constitution

The pipe band was first registered as a charity on 5[th] August 2015. It has a single tier structure and as such the charity trustees are the committee members of the charity.

A copy of the Band’s constitution was forwarded to, and accepted by, OSCR prior to the band’s registration as a charity.

Appointment of Trustees

The management committee is elected at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) which is currently held in October each year. The AGM is open to all members of the pipe band. The committee consists of four Office Bearers, (Chairperson, Secretary, Minute Secretary & Treasurer) plus ten committee members.

The committee has seen several changes over recent years with people stepping down for a variety of reasons, it is therefore satisfying that this last year we have had a settled committee who have remained in post and worked tirelessly for the benefit of the band.

Objectives and Activities

Charitable Purposes

The band’s purpose is to advance education and the arts, heritage, and culture around bagpiping and drumming.

Activities

The band have continued to compete at both Grade 4B and at Grade 3B throughout the season. We competed in three major championships only missing out on the rescheduled British Championship that was re arranged at short notice. We also competed at several minor competitions throughout the year. The relatively new 4B band has continued to expand and in the last year has competed at all of the previously mentioned competitions.

Achievements and Performance

The band returned as usual to the competing arena in grades 4B & 3B at the indoor Sanquhar competition for the start of the season 2024. This allows both bands to assess their readiness for the rest of the season, and both bands were successful in achieving excellent results. The outdoor season began as usual for us at the Gourock Highland games, where a successful start to the season commenced with picking up a placed prize in two competitions. As with the previous season the major competition schedule had been badly disrupted and with that, we competed in several minor competitions throughout Scotland winning several prize positions.

Our major competitions began with the Scottish Championships in July where our 3B band obtained an excellent 4[th] place in their grade. The bands then competed at the European Championships in Perth before arriving at the culmination of the major championships at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow. Both bands had to compete in an qualifying round

and our 3B band was successful in obtaining a final place. Our 3B band then went on to play in the final and achieve a magnificent 6[th] place.

We completed our very successful season with several other prizes at both Bute Highland Games and the Cowal Highland Gathering.

We had numerous players both pipers and drummers who competed in solo competitions throughout the season with varied amount of success and trophies.

We again ran our successful summer school with another batch of enthusiastic both young and old players joining the band as musicians.

Financial Review

The accounting period for this report covers twelve months, from

Our income and expenditure figures have continued to increase over our previous accounting period. With the significant increase of new band members and the need to both purchase new uniform and instruments to ensure compatibility across the band for both major and street performances. The band’s main source of income was members subscriptions and gift aid, this is added to by fundraising events throughout the year which includes bag packing at local supermarkets, attending, and playing at events such as cruise ships leaving the Clyde and other parades that we are invited to play at throughout the year. We have continued to apply for grants from the National Lottery, the Robertson Trust and the local council for some additional funding although these have been unsuccessful in this financial year. We have been successful in receiving some sponsorship from a local company.

Reserves Policy

There is no formal reserves policy. Currently, if the bank balance were to fall below £5000, the management committee would be informed, and a decision taken on appropriate action.

Plans for future period.

For the future development of the band, it is extremely important that the current teaching policy continues. Success in this area will facilitate the integration of young players into the band which will secure the band’s future. There is a fully supported intention to continue providing a Summer School to the local area, to facilitate the desire of any member of the local area to “come along and try” a variety of musical instruments, and hopefully retain these students, who can go on and become fully participating members of the band.

Additionally, the tuition being received by the playing members of the band will hopefully mean that we can continue with our plan to expand our bands and continue competing at the highest possible grades.
