Report on the Activity of the Friends of Argyll Estates Archives in 2025 presented to the Annual Meeting on 7 Nov 2025 by Murdo MacDonald, Chair

|

Our ninth annual meeting was a hybrid event on 8 Nov 2024. Following the business meeting we enjoyed a talk by Ed Sweeney on The genetic signature ofDougall ofArgyll & Lorne and his present-day male-line descendants, a fascinating and personal tale of discovery.

The seminar series 2024/25 included talks from Ronnie Black on John Dewar’s Diary, Caroline Anderson on the The Bute Witchcraft Confessions, Paul Warde on Land, family and economic life in two nineteenth-century Tiree townships, Katharina Pruente on the earls of Argyll and their notaries in the sixteenth century, Kirsty MacFarlane on her search for Campbell Connections on Coll, John Moore on his project to list and record the pre-Ordnance Survey paper landscape and Domhnall-Uilleam Stiubhart on the family connections of John Francis Campbell.

Recordings of last years seminars are available to Friends by logging into the Friends’ secure area of our new website.

The 2025/26 seminar series is underway, having started with Lady Charlotte Campbell in October. Further seminars will reflect the work of researchers to the archives over the past year: David Hopkins will be talking about Scottish Battlefield Memorials of the First World War; Sophia Chapples & Cianna Devitt will speak about Marine Resource Use during times of Climate Adversity, Anna McGregor will explore the ecosystem of native oysters along the west coast of Scotland, Jamie MacGregor will be talking about the Brooch of Lorn, Murdo MacDonald will speak about the early stages of cataloguing the Callander Papers, Flora Swietlicki will talk about her recreation of costumes as part of the Leading Ladies project and Richard Aitken will talk about how he conserves documents from the archives. The full programme is available on the website, with dates and start times.

The Scipio Mactaggart glass-plate negatives conserved in the Adopt-an-Archive campaign 2024 have come home in Inveraray but will shortly be going away for specialist digitisation. Once they return, ‘adoption’ certificates and images will be shared with our generous sponsors. Thank you very much for supporting this project.

Our application to the National Manuscripts Conservation Trust for the earliest Tiree rentals was successful and, with additional support from Friends, the volumes have been conserved

at Inverness and have returned home. We will be setting up a ‘virtual search-room’ experience to view the Tiree rentals to which sponsors will be invited and ‘adoption certificates’ will be issued as usual.

BR <clivered two excellent newsletters during the year — full of interesting articles on the research that people are doing in the archives. We'd like to formally record our thanks to Duncan for all his work. Articles for future editions are welcome. Send to friends@areyllestatesarchives.org and we’ll forward them to Duncan.

We have had two ‘annual’ outings this year: to the Atlantic Islands Centre on the island of Luing in the spring; and to Bonawe Iron Furnace and Historic Kilbride in September. Both were very enjoyable, educational and we had the best company.

Our International Friends sub-group has continued to meet regularly during the year and Catriona will update us on the training events that the group has delivered later in this meeting.

ae: led the development and launch of our new website and has continued to maintain our social media presence. [will update us on this work later in the meeting but we want to take this opportunity to thank him for all his hard work on our behalf.

The Friends continue to maintain links with the Clan Campbell Society North America and Clan Campbell Society Australia. We were delighted to meet many of our long-distance friends and supporters during the CCSNA visit to Scotland in July, both in the archives and at the Inveraray Highland Games.

This year,MEs stepping down from his role as a trustee for the Friends, having been on our management board since the Friends group was established in 2015. Allan delivered our first public talk in 2016. We want to formally record our thanks to Allan for his support and assistance through the years and look forward to continuing to support his research and writing.
