## **Objectives and activities**
**Charitable purposes** The organisation’s purpose is the advancement of health by addressing the social, health and well-being needs of men of all ages and backgrounds living in Dalbeattie and the surrounding area. We do this through the creation, upkeep and development of facilities in which men can meet to undertake creative physical and recreational activities of their choice. **Summary of the main activities in relation to these objects** We achieve this two mornings a week in Units 8&9 of Castle Works, Edingham where our members can meet and work at their own pace in safe, friendly and inclusive work areas using the Shed’s tools and equipment. The principal activities revolve around make and mend projects for local schools, churches, charities and communities, along with larger more complex projects from further afield where our expertise has attracted commissions. We also have a special project where we recreated and exhibit a Skeoch Cycle Car originally made in Dalbeattie in 1920/21, it is funded separately from all other Shed projects owing to its size and complexity. The camaraderie which develops between members working shoulder to shoulder in one of our five workshops is nurtured and extended by all attending members taking a refreshment break together midway through each session to resolve any issues arising and plan forward projects & community involvement. Member cohesion is further reinforced by planned visits and events open to all members and on occasions their friends and family too. The reputation and experience of Shed members leads to them being invited to contribute to other local community groups and to the wider voluntary sector. This benefits members as they increase their social network, and it benefits the Shed by bringing in sufficient commissions to keep the workshops occupied, and sufficient income to make the Shed independent of grant aid. **period**|Of the 108 men who have joined Dalbeattie Men’s Shed in this our 12th
year, we still have 38 active members which is at the limit of the number
we can comfortably and safely accommodate in the workshops and at
refreshment. 2 members became inactive this year, all due failing health
and mobility, they have been replaced by 2 new members: the average
age of members is 77. Our waiting list of potential members has
increased to 11. We appointed an 8thTrustee from amongst our younger
members as a precaution against one of our older Officers becoming
incapacitated.
Shed governance was largely reviewed in a timely manner; safety audits
led to a refreshed Health and Safety Risk Assessment in June 2025,
and we reviewed our SWOT analysis in July. In Q1/26 we refreshed our
Induction Handbook, our Emergency Procedures, and our SCVO
Governance Audit was reviewed in May 2025.

period (continued)|Our 2025-26 Receipts and Payments account show an overall excess of
£8,916 arising from £11,889 expenditure against £20,805 income.
99% of Shed income and expenditure is in our General Funds account
which show £11,287 payments against £20,748 receipts giving an
excess of £9,461. This excess is exceptional for two reasons: we
received final payments amounting to £2,600 for 3 multiyear projects,
and £1,600 of payments in advance for 2 projects which will begin in the
next financial year. Analysis of these figures demonstrates how our
workshops keep our members busy and fulfilled whilst providing a
vibrant go-to make and mend resource for the local community. The
Shed completed over 180 commissions in the year generating our main
income. 67% of our general fund income of £20,748 was from sales of
made, recycled & upcycled items, and refurbishments, 18% was
donations,9% was Gift Aid and savings interest, and 6% was from coffee
morning fund raising. We did not receive any grant monies this year.
Our biggest outlay was 47% on materials and consumables, followed by
significant improvements to the safety and functionality of the Shed.
21% of our £11,889 expenditure went on purchase of equipment which
included new air compressor, desktop computer, hi torque drill, vacuum
and filtration equipment and new battery/pads for our defibrillator, 9%
went on cleaning, repairs and maintenance, and another 8% on
insurance, 9% on IT, comms, printing, stationery, affiliation &
professional fees, leaving 6% for,social, and networking events.
Within the Shed social bonding starts with our 11 o’clock refreshment
break, this year as previous years the members celebrated Christmas by
dining out with our landlord with all meals paid for by members, and we
also held a Shed open day for members family and friends with a buffet
paid from Shed funds. Dalbeattie Shed hosted visits from respected
individuals such as officers from TSDG, Age Scotland, Vincent
Wildlife Trust, Dumfries Peoples Project and academics from Heriot
Watt University to debate items of mutual interest. We hosted the Q3/25
D&G Men’s Shed Network Meeting. Within the town our annual coffee
mornings and our display of goods for sale in a high street shop window
generate income for the shed and publicises the range of our make and
mend services available to the community.
Forby hosting Q3/25 D&G Shed’s Network meeting, Dalbeattie Shed
has arranged with Age Scotland and attended the other 2 quarterly
network meetings at Newton Stewart and Dumfries. Our members have
donated/sold surplus equipment and we have delivered training/advice
to other local Sheds. Our Shed provides the UKMSA an ambassador for
the South of Scotland who is also on UKMSA panels, presents on behalf
of UKMSA, and supports Scottish calls for advice/information like those
from the Paisley Housing Association, and Heriot Watt University.
Shed members have also volunteered for other local services such as
Dalbeattie Civic Daze, D&G Carers, Macmillan Cancer Support, D&G

## **Financial review**
## **Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves**
## **Details of any deficit**
The Shed has two reserve accounts Skeoch & General. The Skeoch reserve account arose from the specific project to re-create and display a 1920s Cycle Car funded entirely by donations. This project which started in 2017 involved significant risk and expense so throughout it has been accounted separately from our general account. Fundraising for this project overshot the build cost significantly so all surplus from restricted donations was garnered into a Skeoch reserve account which currently sits at £8,413 – it will cover storage, insurance and display costs for the foreseeable future. The Shed keeps a general reserve account because our tenure of units 8&9 of Castle Works is only granted whilst they have no commercial value. Should a commercial tenant offer to rent the space we would need to match that offer or vacate, so we have built a reserve fund against that eventuality, the reserve fund currently sits at £44,224. Neither reserve fund is in deficit
