Structure, Governance and Management Constitution

The Charity is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (a SCIO). It was registered in its current legal form on 15th March 2015. It has a single tier structure and as such the trustees are the members for the charity.

Trustees Meeting

The Charity’s trustees make up the management committee and meet, on average, once every two months.

Objectives and Purposes:

The organisation is established for charitable purposes only. The objectives and purposes are:

• the advancement of education,

• the advancement of the arts, heritage and culture, particularly through dance.

Organisation Profile

Abhinaya Dance academy (ADA) is an art school which teaches the South Indian traditional dance style known as Bharathanatyam. ADA was established in 2004, at Glasgow by Smt. Esther Sunija Binu.

Sunija aspires to provide the highest quality of dance instruction for students of all ages and different ethnic origins. ADA, since its inception, has been chiefly responsible for the spread and nourishment of South Indian culture in Scotland. The academy leads the way in collaborating with other art forms to ensure the development of South Indian Art Forms.

ADA classes are conducted not only to pursue a professional career in dance, and gain qualifications which are recognised at a global level, but also to help people learn new skills, develop self confidence, make friends and nurture sociability. This benefits the individual and their wider circles of family and friends, thus improving the wellbeing of all.

ADA offers beginners, intermediate and advanced level courses based on a well-organised syllabus. The internationally recognised examinations (The Oriental Fine Arts Academy London) provide the individuals with a thorough knowledge of the dance techniques. There are 8 grades for Bharatanatyam and as the individual progresses through each grade the standard and expectations of the presentation and the perfection of the technique increases. Since there are no age limits for the dance student, the examiners judge the student according to their maturity and dance accomplishments.

Activities

Our activities are to provide South Indian classical dance, music and Dancercise - a unique fusion of South Indian and contemporary movement, rhythm and exercise. These activities teach new skills, promote active and healthy lifestyles. They also convey social messages such as social cohesion, social harmony, moral values and provide the opportunity to make new friends and break down social isolation.

Achievements and Performance

Based on the development of education and the wide range of culture, heritage and art, we are fixed on ensuring that dance - as an art form -continues to grow in Scotland.

To develop our dancers of the future, we have provided a mentorship programs i.e, senior students teach younger students. Our senior students take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. They do their voluntary work with us by teaching our younger students. This has enabled our students to gain a lot of experience as they are learning new skills and we are sparking an interest in teaching in our next batch of senior students.

Vijaya Dashami celebration

As part of the Dusshera celebrations Oct 2024 Abhinaya held a Pooja and a small showcase where students performed Bharatanatyam dances to friends and family. Ladies from the Dancercise classes also participated in this event by learning a short dance piece on the day and performing it in front of everyone, similar to their regular classes.

Thanks to Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire through help of these organisation we have achieved success of the Dancercise program. It has offered participants the opportunity to perform and showcase their talents at significant community events. These performances have been pivotal in building self-confidence and promoting cultural appreciation among participants and audiences alike.

While weekly attendance has been consistent, the highest turnout recorded for the sessions was 15 participants. This engagement demonstrates growing interest and commitment to the program's offerings.

Type of Support Received

The program has proven to be a source of empowerment and social enrichment for participants. Key benefits include:

• Skill Development : Participants have learned new dance techniques while engaging in enjoyable physical activities.

• Improved Wellbeing : Enhanced mental health outcomes have been noted, stemming from reduced social isolation and increased physical activity.

• Social Networking : The program fostered a sense of community and friendship among participants, many of whom have shared their positive experiences through verbal feedback and written testimonials.

Impact Measures

The program’s impact extends beyond the individual participants, influencing community dynamics and promoting inclusivity. Key measures of success include:

• Performance Opportunities : Participants performed at multiple celebrations, gaining confidence and creating memorable experiences.

• Community Engagement : School work shop and workshop at care centre in and around Glasgow has highlighted the program’s ability to bring people together.

• Outreach and Awareness : Workshops at events like the Diwali celebration in East Renfrewshire raised awareness and inspired more women to join. Social media promotions and leaflet campaigns have also been instrumental in boosting class participation.

Program Goals and Future Plans

The Dancercise initiative focuses on fostering a spirit of community, breaking down social barriers, and promoting equality through shared learning experiences. The program contributes to:

• Reducing social isolation and loneliness.

• Encouraging teamwork and mutual support.

• Strengthening community bonds and relationships.

Looking ahead, we plan to:

1. Host a final workshop and additional event by the end of February to round out the program.

2. Continue promoting participation through targeted outreach efforts.

3. Share updates and photos documenting the success of upcoming events.

By nurturing inclusivity and encouraging personal growth, the Dancercise program remains a beacon of community enrichment and cultural celebration

Diwali event

Abhinaya students of Tamil Diaspora performed at the Glasgow Tamil Sangam Diwali 2024.

Social Media

Abhinaya Dance Academy has gained more engagement on social media, particularly through Facebook as updates relating to Abhinaya’s activities have been posted more regularly. There have also been competitions and quizzed held on Abhinaya’s social media page which has helped widen our audience on our public social channels.

Financial Review

The main source of income is fees collected from parents and from public performances commissioned by Abhinaya Dance Academy itself.

The Board of Directors secured substantial funding from Creative Scotland to develop and present the Nritha Sangamam (Dance Gathering) , at the Tramway in Glasgow. That funding continued to support the company into the following financial year for the project expenses. With the help of Voluntary action we have we managed to continue the dancercise project which helped us to offer free classes for ladies. Those classes were well received and well attended.

Plans for the Future

The Abhinaya Team is directing its future efforts towards both internal and external development through collaborative initiatives, active engagement on social media, and the reinforcement of the Board.

Abhinaya firmly believes that blending diverse heritages in classical and other dance forms, coupled with leveraging current social media platforms, provides a distinct perspective and positions Abhinaya uniquely in Scotland.

Following a highly successful year with support from funders, the Abhinaya Board and the hands-on creative director are diligently working to ensure a seamless progression. Each day brings new learning experiences, and the team remains hopeful of brighter days ahead.
