Animal Welfare

Our Vision at FRED is for all our donkeys to have the assurance of a
permanent home where their needs are anticipated and fully met. Where
donkeys have quality of life, through correct nutrition and physical care,
appropriate mental stimulation, prompt veterinary treatment when
necessary and the companionship of other donkeys at a similar stage in
life. Finally, that the end of life be timeous and conducted with love and in
dignity.
Currently we have 24 FRED donkeys and one Donkey Sanctuary donkey

and all are permanent residents here at FRED. FRED continues to provide
care and welfare of the donkeys and the labour necessary to ensure this.
Care and Welfare includes feed, bedding, farriery, dentistry and stable
maintenance. Labour includes attending to the above plus grooming,
mucking out, yard maintenance and spending time with the donkeys to
ensure their good health and tp attend to their different needs.

APPENDIX 1

Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period

We have had a more settled year here at FRED due to only one death and the successful integration of the nine donkeys who arrived last year. 8 of the nine donkeys we have rescued this year have been the result of the current cost of living financial crisis. The ninth, Lizzie, was a survivor of abuse and neglect. The first two came from a loving home whose owner had lost her grazing in North Ayrshire and had to very reluctantly give up her two cherished donkeys. Because these donkeys were much loved, they keep their names, Spider and Delphine. Another six came from relatively close by and were the result of a house repossession. These six were in quite poor condition with their feet in a particular bad way. As they came from a far-from-good home we had to find new names for them all. ....so welcome to FRED - Bertha, Krystal, Percy, Albie, Ivy and Reo. The ninth donkey, Lizzie, arrived with no name and was pregnant. Lizzie defied all the odds and delivered a healthy female foal on May 2nd 2024 called Patsy. It is no exageration to say that our biggest achievement of the year was enabling Lizzie to have her foal and to share in her enjoyment and pride in Patsy.

Respective
responsibilities of
trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance
with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) 2005 Act and the
Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity trustees
consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the Accounts Regulations
does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section
44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent
examiner’s statement
My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the 2006 Accounts
Regulations. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the
charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes
consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks
explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken
do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do
not express an audit opinion on the viewgiven bythe accounts.
Independent examiner’s In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention [other than that
statement disclosed on the attached page*]
1.
which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the
requirements:

to keep accounting records in accordance with section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and
Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations, and

to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with
Regulation 9 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations
have not been met, or
2.
to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper
understanding of the accounts to be reached.
