Objectives and activities
Charitable purposes
Soundhouse’s charitable purposes are: education; and the arts, heritage and culture; by cultivation, development and promotion of the performing arts, and in particular live music in all its aspects by the hosting of live music performances and any other such ways as the SCIO through its trustees shall determine from time to time and by any other charitable means.
Summary of main activities in relation to those objectives
This year we had our biggest and best ever iteration of our folk music festival – Edinburgh Tradfest – and launched a brand new event to the city’s calendar – the Soundhouse Winter Festival, which took place over the St Andrew’s Weekend.
With Edinburgh Tradfest continuing to support Scottish folk artists (75% of bands/artists were from or based in Scotland), the Soundhouse Winter Festival (SWF), inspired by our Fringe run in August 2023, was programmed entirely from musicians living in Scotland. SWF featured artists from across the genres, with those from jazz, pop, folk, indy and classical music represented. Also included was a silent film with a specially composed score performed live and two concerts with spoken word elements.
We re-started our year-round gig programme in early 2024 with a focus on monthly shows in the main theatre at The Traverse. This is a departure from our weekly concerts in the bar that we had been programming since 2014 (with a short break during the covid years).
Edinburgh Tradfest was funded by Creative Scotland and the William Grant Foundation. Our new event – The Soundhouse Winter Festival – and our Traverse One programme were supported by Creative Scotland.
The Soundhouse Choir had a great year with an average of 100 singers taking part each week.
The board meetings were well attended this year. We welcomed a new chair , and new trustee in young musician . The board continued to keep a keen interest in programming, fundraising and generally supporting all activities.
Structure, governance and management
Type of governing document
The Soundhouse Organisation is governed by Constitution.
Trustee recruitment and appointment joined the board on 29 April 2024.
Achievements and performance
Edinburgh Tradfest 2024
“Thank you so much for inviting me to join on my home turf in Edinburgh for the Tradfest. It meant a lot to me! What a wonderful festival you have delivered. Looking forward to next year already!”
–
In May 2024 we delivered our most successful Edinburgh Tradfest ever, with a total audience (for our main music programme) of 4,092, up 25% on our previous record breaking year of 2023 (and more than double the audience for music since we took on the festival in 2019). We had many, many sell outs or near sell outs and were blown away by the response to a programme that included a fair amount of left-field content and artists previously unknown to audiences.
We are indebted to our opening and closing headliners, Valtos (at the Queen’s Hall) and (at the Assembly Rooms) respectively, who gave us a huge boost with their energy and perfectly-judged shows.
Included in Edinburgh Tradfest’s music programme were, from Scotland: , Assynt, Valtos, ,
.
was Our special commission, Everyone’s Welcome to Edinburgh, curated, arranged and produced by with help from his band –
On the day was delayed in Shetland with his place was taken on the night, expertly, by who had been shadow-learning the show in case of travel disasters. Great forward thinking by !
The Rebellious Truth talk, in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh and presented by , featured the legendary folk singer talking about his seven decade career, and a live performance by University of Edinburgh Trad Musician in Residence Fraser Fifield. This performance was free to attend and to live stream.
Workshops were included in the main music programme (and there was also a “Storytelling for Musicians” workshop at the Storytelling Centre). For 13-18 year olds we partnered with the Edinburgh Youth Gaitherin, led by Sarah Hayes and featuring tutors
. We had drop in sessions by
This year at the City of Edinburgh Music School the pupils were treated to an afternoon workshop and recital by who shared her creative practice and her love of electronics in March (scheduled to avoid the exams in May).
Adult workshops were particularly well attended this year and included group singing from Birmingham-based Zimbabwean singer , Scottish traditions from , fiddle technique from . and songwriting by
Instead of late night gigs in the Traverse Bar (this year) we programmed local musicians to lead sessions at the weekends. Highlights included getting the entire bar to sing Wild Mountain Thyme, and the large number of local professional musicians who turned out for and session on the last
Saturday.
Apart from the opening and closing events the music programme was presented at the Traverse Theatre which was a-buzz with musicians and music fans from 4 to 12 May.
Included in the schedule this year were a programme of films from the Folk Film Gathering and storytelling and family events by the Scottish Storytelling Centre/TRACs.
The festival was supported by grants from Creative Scotland and William Grant Foundation.
The Soundhouse Winter Festival 2024
“Superb Soundhouse Winter Festival deserves to be the first of many ” – , The Scotsman
Music fans packed out the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh for Soundhouse’s first ever Winter Festival (28 Nov to 2 Dec). Bringing in an audience mostly comprised of locals (73% from the capital, with 21% from the rest of Scotland), it proved the best antidote to a dark time of year and a great way to mark St Andrew’s Day.
The festival ran over five days and included some of the finest jazz, indy and folk musicians from Scotland. Sellouts included the ii EE With an outstanding performance from guest Italian staroon drums; anda performing alongsidea stellar line-up of trad favourites - aa a[eeeeCS]
Other popular highlights included a screening of The Rugged Island: A Shetland Lyric (1933), opened by Shetland pianist ii and accompanied by music composed by award winning multiinstrumentalist JE from Fair Isle with Shetlander ii GE| a preview of rock goddess I new album Clementine; and a performance of Unwritten Women read by Edinburgh's former[i to a new score written and performed bya.
The Festival also received five star reviews and was a key part of this year’s Fair Saturday celebrations in Edinburgh.
We were thrilled with the appetite that audiences showed for live music during the winter months. We knew that people would come out for the festival if we programmed great music, so that’s what we did and it paid off. It was an absolute blast to present five days of jazz, rock, punk, poetry, and silent film, not a line-up we have had the opportunity to programme before, but one that we would definitely look to repeat next year.
The festival was supported by Creative Scotland, and part of the Fair Saturday Scotland initiative which offers an alternative to the excesses of Black Friday.
Year-round programming
Our occasional gigs programme, supported by the NLEPF (National Lottery Extended Programme Funding), continued in 2024 and into 2025. We promoted three such concerts in Traverse One (the main theatre) in this period:i| with support
from the Trio on 8 April 24, Modern Vikings on 23 September 24 and Dean Owens on 16 December 24.
After some teething troubles it was decided to continue with around one gig a month in the Traverse Theatre
The Traverse built on their own series of bar gigs during this period with our ‘in kind’ assistance and we’re delighted that the theatre continues to build its reputation as a music venue.
Venues in Edinburgh
Last year we decided to switch focus to promoting gigs in other venues and supporting others with plans for founding new live music facilities. We spoke to various people planning new venues including from the National Centre for Music (at the Old Royal High School on Regent Road); Music; and the team at The Pitt in Granton;
who was interested in buying The Jam House. Of those only The Pitt is up and running. We are looking forward to hearing more about the National Centre for Music once they know capacities and rate card information. Work is underway at the site and the venue is slated to open in 2027.
The Soundhouse Choir
The Soundhouse Choir continued to be led by . It was a challenging time for Heather as she lost two close members of her family in this year, and had to cancel some sessions at short notice.
Despite this the choir, who numbered an average of 100 members across the four terms, were able to work towards a fundraising concert at St Giles Cathedral on 29 June 2024 and to sing for comedian
funeral procession on the Royal Mile on 29 November 2024.
In the spring term of 2025 the choir was invited to be part of the research phase for the formation of a new Scottish Poetry Choir, headed
by[BM. The purpose was to explore how this might work structurally, and to tutor as a choir leader.
Working with composer i and the choir created a piece around one ofJ poems, to be performed at the end of the choir’s summer term 2025.
GE would like to thank the choir for their understanding and support through this difficult period.
Financial review
Our free reserves at the end of this year were £22,166.
Statement of the charity’s policy on reserves
The charity's reserves should be a contingency for festivals that only receive partial funding. This is currently £20,000.
Future plans
Next year’s report will include Edinburgh Tradfest 25 and our second The Soundhouse Winter Festival, and some fantastic stand alone concerts at The Traverse, Queen's Hall and Pleasance Theatre.
