Management
The trustees are responsible for the strategic direction and governance of VIKS. For certain activities that VIKS undertakes, we have a number of volunteers who support the objectives of VIKS. These volunteers occasionally attend trustee meetings to discuss progress and developments.

iv. Aims and objectives
Objectives
The purpose of VIKS is to improve the daily living, health, wellbeing and education of adolescents and teenagers (hereafter referred to as KidS). The focus for this group is to enhance the experience of 'growing up' and to help attain a better and brighter future for KidS.
The foundations under which VIKS aims to meet these objectives are as follows:
-
Providing support with mentorship, teaching and informal 'buddying' to KidS in order to promote their development and their growing up in a safe, healthy and supportive environment
-
Supplying materials which can improve general knowledge, and wider development of KidS through educational courses and journal
-
Developing and engaging KidS in work experience programmes to help them gain awareness and understanding of future career routes, and to improve their future career potential
-
Funding and supporting projects in which KidS can work with one another as part of voluntary work that instils a culture of giving and sense of community
-
Raising awareness for and promoting health and emotional wellbeing issues related to the growing up phase of KidS, and engaging the support of relevant services
Activities
VIKS engages in five broad themes of activities, some of which are in development whilst others are fully functioning programmes:
-
i. Work experience programmes : Organising and running structured programmes to allow school and early university students to gain an insight into future career options, particular those options where access to work experience may be limited or restrictive
-
ii. VIKS Award : Recognition for exceptional educational achievement and / or significant progress in the face of adversity during the schooling period of a child. To be supported with bursary awards for school children to instil confidence and financial support for development
-
iii. Magazine subscriptions : Funding for and provision of educational magazines and journals to school students who show interest in a particular field and may otherwise be limited in their access to such media
-
iv. Technical course sponsorship : Funding to enable children with limited financial or geographical access to take part in technical or vocational courses
-
v. Voluntary programmes : Organising and creating links for school and university students to take part in voluntary work. This will be done in a supported environment to build self-confidence, but also support a sense of contributing back to the community
2
v. Main achievements in this period
Achievements
VIKS had another good year as a registered Scottish charity. We continued to develop our work experience programme, engaging over 30 volunteers to support more than 400 KidS across Scotland through work experience programmes. Under the branding of ‘Medic Insight’, we provided programmes of work experience to support students from a diverse set of backgrounds to understand more about potential careers in medicine.
In addition, VIKS realised its ambition to create a VIKS award, and has awarded its first prize to a school student on the basis of academic achievement in the sciences – in order to support their pursuit in this area through their university education.
Future plans
VIKS has started to explore opportunities that were considered as part of ‘future activities’ in its founding handbook however its focus remains on the UK given its small scale efforts and volunteer basis at the moment.

The charity s trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation Iolllldl of the 2006 Regulations does not apply. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the account5. Independent Examinerfs Statement In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention.. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements.. to keep accounting records in accordance with section 44llllal of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 RegLJ13tions, and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Re8ulation 9 of the 2006 Regulations have not been met, or 2. to which, in my opinion. attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached
