Charitable purposes

Our purposes, as recorded in our constttution. are the prevention or relief of poverty, the
advancement of education, the advancement of health, the saving of lives, the advancement
of citizenship or community development.

students have completed our training scholarships since 2015, and 9 have
qraduated. Most of these have obtained govemment posts.
Of our 3 outgoing (2020 to 20231 students, one passed her finals and is now
registered as a nurse. FOCH paid her registration costs {£100). One student failed
his mock finals and was deferred to the next exam (Mav 20241. One failed 1 course
and must resit his finals.
FOCH will be absotbing these resit costs from aeneral
funds.
Selection of further students for FOCH Scholarships is underway.

eal.. This project, part-funded by FOCH and part by First Aid
Africa (FAA), was successfully completed and piped oxygen is now available at the
bedside, and in the operating theatre.
The oxygen generator itself, initiated by FOCH and funded by Scottish Government.
via FAA, is now fully operational. undef the care of a well trained local staff member.
There are a few snaggings to be completed on the shelter which houses the plant,
before official commissioning by the Ministy of Health {MOH} can take place.
FOCH still holds a surplus of £3,753, restricted to oxygen project activits'es.

Gt.. This multi-way collaboration, between the
Whanganui Rolary Club. FOCH, UK., The Swanson Family Charity, Scotland., and
Chttambo Hospital, is going very well.
A successful Crowdfunding Appeal, together with large donations from 2 other
organisations (Ihe Whanganui Rotary Club, North Island. New Zealand, and the
Swanson Family Charity, Scotland), completed the fundraising phase of the project.
In January 2024, we engaged the services of a skilled Procurement Officer al the
Zambian Ministry of Health, to guide us through the tendering process. She visited
Chitambo Mice, firstly to preside over a site visit for prospective contractors15°
February 20241 and then for the bid opening and evaluation meeting for those 5
contractors who had submitted bids (8° March 2024). Following evaluation, MKP
Contractors Limited was selected as the winning bidder. FOCH funded the
Procurement Officerfs travel expenses, and those of the Chair of the Zambian Board.
for attendance at those vital meetings (£272 and £384 respectively).
At the end of the financial year (March 20241. the balance of restricted funds for the MWS
was £27.432.

1.2 Projects supported, in Zambia, by unrestricted funds
Ambulan￿ maintenance funds." In March 2024, £1.000 was sent for annual
maintenance of the Chitambo Centenary ambulance, donated by FOCH and other
Scottish partners in 2008. This was a topup for funds sent in 2023, which had not
fully been spent. This vehicle is ageing but being kept going by the skilled
maintenance of the local ambulance crew.

3 stsff development scholarships have been supported so far..
Theatre Nurse: A senior theatre nurse successfully completed a Bsc Nursing
Degree and will graduate following submission of the research component of the
course. FOCH funded him to attend an annual Theatre Nurses, Conferen
(August 20231. In October 2023. we provided a further £140 topup to his annual
fees, when his university increased the fees to include the research component.
Radiography Technician.. A Chitsmbo Radiography Technician is now in the 4"
year of his 5-year Radiography degree and is progressing well. Yearly tuition
fees1£724) were paid in October 2023. On request. we also made a contribulion
to a new smart phone to enable easier intemet access when working from home
(£541.
Medical Otricer: A senior Medical Officer requested assislance to undertake
refresher training in maternity care; general surgery and orthopaedics. £1,333
was granted in March 2024. for maternity care, with a view to supporting further
training in the future. A report will be provided on completion of the training.

Our Zambian Board is striving to build its caDacitv and has so far apDointed 3 new members
induding a Nurse Tutor. Registered Nurse, and local Community Councillor.

Buildin
Half of our 12-strona Board is based in Zambia. We are strivina to transfer the balance of
organisational power to them, including building their capacity for this role. We have not yet
identified funding for this activty.
iii) EducationlLearnin
FOCH members continue to participate in Scolland's International
Development Alliance (SIDA) training programmes and conferences. The FOCH UK Chair
has also registered with SCVO, for information about their charity training porgrammes.
FOCH is invited to present a paper on 'Transferring the balance of powerf at the SIDA Spring
Conference, Edinburgh (16104124), and also to provide an exhibition stand at a cost of £100
to FOCH. We can sell some Zambian crafts to other conference delegates.

Key Risks and Going Concern
Our key risks include..
The loss of ke volunteer5.' This is mitigated by our continuous efforts to attract new
members.
Finance
The income for the year was £39,233 and we made payments of £5.974.
leaving us with a surplus of £33,259
Trustee remuneration and expenses
The trustees did not receive any remuneration during this period.
Reserves
We started the year with a bank balan￿ of £8,987.

2 Naturo and purpose of funds
Unrestricted funds are those that may be used al the discretion of the trustees in fvrtherance of
the objects of the charity. The trustees maintain a single unrestricted fund.

I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31" March 2024.
Respecttve responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity 5tru5teesare responsible forthe preparation of the accounts in accordance with terms

Basis of iThJependent exarniner's statement
My examination is carried out in accordantr with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotlandl
Regulation% 2006 las amended). An examination includes a review of the accounting record5 kept by
the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those fewrds. It also includes
consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts. and seeks explanations from the
trustees concerning such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that
would be required in an audil, and consequently l (b not express an audit opinion on the view given
by the accounts.
