Glenorchy and Innishail Community Orchard and Woodland Garden
Trustees Report (Cont’d) For year ended 30th September 2025
Summary of the main activities in relation to these objects
The management committee met regularly, to plan the programme of maintenance for the year ahead, assess financial requirements, agree funding applications, plan volunteer workdays, encourage new volunteers and agree the planning and arrangement of community events in the garden.
The AGM held on March 28" was well attended and people came up with a list of future plans.
The management committee and volunteers remain committed to the objectives of the group, managed by individual efforts to keep the community garden at a basic level of maintenance sufficient to meet health and safety requirements and for it to be enjoyed and used by the public safely, when restrictions allowed.
Achievements and performance
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period
Work continued in Autumn 2024 to implement recommendations from the health and safety audit. Volunteer sessions were held to clear paths and stack wood left from the initial work to the large trees. The funding application for major work to mature trees was successful.
Dalmally Primary School pupils made sustainable decorations and decorated trees in the orchard as part of their Christmas celebrations. Additional battery lights were purchased for the Christmas lights switch-on and funds allocated for refreshments. In the event, it proved to be a very stormy day, so the lights were put up by a small number of hardy volunteers and attendance was less than expected. : Storm Eowyn hit Scotland, on 25" January 2025, resulting in large scale damage to trees in the orchard. The decision was taken to close the orchard, in the interest of public safety, and it remained closed until major work had taken place to make it safe.
With this completed, regular volunteer sessions were held on the second Sundayof the month in Dalmally, throughout the rest of the Spring and Summer, to prune trees, maintain the willow structure, keep brambles and ferns in check, strim and cut the grass. These attracted some new volunteers and volunteers from the Community Fire Station joined when they were able, helping out with some of the heavier tasks, such as renewing fence posts.
Regular monthly volunteer sessions were held throughout the spring and summer, on the third Sunday of the month at the Portsonachan site, to maintain flower beds, hedges, weed the patio and paths and strim.
Planting continued on both sites to increase colour and interest for visitors.
Both sites continue to be well used by members of the local community, as well as people from further afield. The orchard is used by people from nearby villages such as Taynuilt and Oban, some 25 miles away, as well as many visitors to the area. Scottish Wild Picnics continue to use the orchard to host their events.
