Aldouran Wetland Garden Annual Report

This year was notable for wet and stormy weather which impacted on the vegetation and paths in the garden and woodland areas, the consequences of which are only now being put right. That aside, we have had a busy year with many willing volunteers helping to nurture the garden and encourage visitors of all ages to enjoy the area.

We have repaired and painted the bird hide and built a wishing well. New sculptures of owls and bears have been added to the sculpture trail. We became ‘Proud Supporters’ of the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere from whom we received funding to create a bog garden in the wetland area.. All these improvements have helped to sustain and develop the project for the future.

. Our annual plant sale attracted many visitors and raised valuable funds as did the Easter Monday Fun Day. We held three outdoor activities days led by qualified Forest School Leaders. These attracted a maximum number of participants on each occasion and are promised again for the summer of 2025.

Despite the theft of our honesty box at one point, voluntary donations continue to be very generous. We held a coffee morning with display of miniatures made by one of our volunteers to raise funds and donations at our annual Easter Monday Fun Day were also generous.

We have a healthy number of adult volunteers and our young Wetland Watchers group numbered around 9 this season. We will continue to encourage them to come in the next season to help us whilst learning about the environment in the process.

The adult volunteers take turns throughout the season at being on-the-spot wardens for the project, ensuring everything is in good order, that records of sightings in the bird hide are kept and talking to visitors.

All in all, we continue to care for Aldouran Wetland Garden and encourage biodiversity there whilst enjoying the social contact which inevitably accompanies it.
