**What the charity does:** The Highlands &amp; Islands Environment Foundation (HIEF) aims to protect and restore the natural beauty, biodiversity and eco-systems of the highlands and islands of Scotland for the benefit of all by working with grassroots organisations and local communities to support projects in freshwater, marine and coastal, forest and woodland and montane habitats as appropriate. Collating, and thus maximising, philanthropic funds from people and organisations with a passion for the area, HIEF awards grants and provides additional support, if required, to test and develop solutions which identify best practice and can be replicated to create systemic change for sustained positive environmental impact.

**Objectives:** ‘The organisation’s purposes are: To advance environmental protection and improvement, through the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment within Scotland, in particular but not exclusively by monitoring and protecting natural habitats and biodiversity, in the land and in the sea and establishing marine protected areas. and To advance education, with a particular focus on education relating to conserving, protecting and improving the physical and natural environment of Scotland through the dissemination of information about conservation, protection and improvement activities including waste, water and energy usage’
