The purposes of the Trust are to preserve and maintain the letters, books, maps and plans known as the Hopetoun Papers, and to permit members of the public to access and study the same. With reference to the modern charity test, the Trust contributes to the advancement of heritage and the advancement of education.

Objectives: To stand possessed of the Hopetoun Papers upon trust: permanently to preserve and maintain the Hopetoun Papers as a collection and in as perfect and accessible condition as possible for the purposes of the advancement of education. for the purposes aforesaid to permit all members of the public desiring in good faith so to do with the object of study, research or education to have access to the Hopetoun Papers in order to read, examine, inspect, copy, photograph or otherwise reproduce the same.
