Objectives and activities

Beloved Rabbits is a new Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation established in March 2019.

This charity has been established to replace the unincorporated organisation Fairly Beloved Rabbit Care – SC042706. Fairly Beloved Rabbit Care (SC042706) intends to wind up and pass its assets and liabilities to Beloved Rabbits (SC049128).

This report therefore encompasses all activities for both charities over the governed period of the report.

The organisation’s purposes are:

  1. To advance the welfare of rabbits by:

  2. providing emergency and temporary accommodation for domestic rabbits in need, where the care need is established either through owner neglect, change in circumstances, owner election to surrender to our care or stray and abandoned domestic rabbits.; or

  3. ensuring adequate husbandry for all animals within the care of the organisation; or

  4. ensuring sufficient medical care, including access to adequate veterinary services

  5. assisting existing owners with identifying new permanent homes for their pets as a result of changes in circumstances; or

  6. providing rabbit introduction and bonding services to assist owner with the safe introduction of rabbits within new co-habiting pairs or small groups; or

  7. providing rabbit fostering on behalf of other agencies and organisations; and

  8. finding suitable new permanent owners for rabbits within our care.

  9. To advance the education of rabbit welfare through raising awareness of abandoned rabbits and providing rabbit care advice to potential and existing owners and encouraging responsible rabbit ownership.

4

Structure, governance and management

Type of governing document

The organisation is now a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO), achieving approval from OSCR in March 2019.

A copy of the charity’s constitution is available upon request.

The structure of the organisation consists of:-

  1. the MEMBERS - who have the right to attend members' meetings (including any annual general meeting) and have important powers under the constitution; in particular, the members appoint people to serve on the board and take decisions on changes to the constitution itself;

  2. the BOARD - who hold regular meetings, and generally control the activities of the organisation; for example, the board is responsible for monitoring and controlling the financial position of the organisation.

The people serving on the board are referred to in this constitution as CHARITY TRUSTEES.

5

Trustee recruitment and appointment

Our board was formed of founding member trustees, who each played an active and involved role within the former organisation, Fairly Beloved Rabbit Care.

All volunteers were advised of the plans of formation of Beloved Rabbits from the former Fairly Beloved Rabbit Care and were given an opportunity to apply for roles as members or trustees if they felt inclined to.

Full details of our ongoing recruitment process for members (management committee members), and board of trustees is detailed within the charity constitution and is available upon request.

6

Achievements and performance

Rabbit Arrivals

There is always a very high demand for rabbit rescue & rehoming services within Scotland, and we continue to face a situation where demand exceeds our capacity.

Despite the operational challenges presented by the global Covid-19 pandemic, Beloved Rabbits continued to provide key services inline with Government guidelines throughout the period. However, due to challenges we faced during the national lock-down period throughout March to June 2020, we found ourselves having to close our rescue and rehoming waiting list temporarily for the first time.

During the year we received requests from 340 owners seeking help to rehome a total of 525 rabbits. This represented a reduction of around 26% on the preceding year, but this will be due to the closure period during the initial lockdown.

Our ability to address the demand has also been hampered by the pandemic, affecting availability of our foster care volunteers. As demonstrated below, we were only able to provide foster space for 212 of these rabbits (40.4%).

In addition, we accepted a further 38 rabbits back into our care from historical adoptions. This can happen due to unplanned changes in circumstances, or where the adopted rabbit fails to successfully bond with existing rabbits in the new owners household.

7

Rabbit Adoptions

We are very proud of the standards we uphold for our foster and adoptive homes, following a strict home assessment process to ensure suitability of new homes to meet the rabbit welfare needs and standards approved by the latest research.

Despite the challenges that came with reduced operations throughout the pandemic, we were able to continue adoptions of rabbits throughout the year, focussing on welfare need cases only during lockdown periods inline with government guidelines.

This has meant we have seen a slight reduction in adoptions, with a fall of 9% throughout the year.

We are also proud to recognise that we have successfully reduced the average time within our rescue to only 48 days, meaning we are successfully preparing the rabbits and finding them a new home within less than 2 months on average.

Supporting Young Volunteers

Beloved Rabbits engage several young volunteers aged 12 to 18 as they gain much needed animal welfare experience to support their future aspirations in careers in animal welfare and veterinary industries.

8

Sadly, the covid restrictions have resulted in these teams having to be stood down for large periods of the year: as our teams had to be limited to essential on-site volunteers only, limited to only one or two members per shift, we could not comfortably accommodate our young volunteers safely.

As a result our Young volunteers were absent from duty throughout March to August 2020.

During this period it was vital to us to maintain contact with our teams, and we were delighted to be in a position to welcome some of our young volunteers back on shift, in reduced teams, in August. However, again due to the restrictions many of the team found themselves carrying out volunteering only once every two weeks instead of our normal weekly team rota.

It has been disappointing for us all that this important aspect of our work has been hit heavily as a result of the pandemic.

Events & Fundraising Activity

Beloved Rabbits has historically conducted the majority of fundraising and awareness events during the Spring/Summer period.

Due to the impact of the pandemic, all our events activity had to be cancelled throughout 2020.

This has had an impact on income streams from summer events such as our galas and fetes, and we have also had to suspend educational visits.

This situation has given the management team cause to review our overall fundraising and event strategy and an important decision was made to withdraw the attendance of all live rabbits from events and educational presentations on a permanent basis. This follows a review of the practice in terms of the welfare of the rabbits, and it was felt that attendance at such events was not in keeping with welfare messages we are keen to promote, and did not allow members of the public to view rabbits in a natural, comfortable environment. A revised Event strategy will be developed post-pandemic for 2021.

Grant Applications

We have had exceptional success with grant applications this year, which has been a blessing against the back-drop of the pandemic. In many ways this has been the saving grace for the charity as we have not had to be too concerned about the loss of fundraising income caused by the pandemic as the grant funds available have bridged that gap.

9

Again, this has been a bit of an awakening for the Trustees as to the potential of Grant funding moving forwards and a revision to our fundraising approach will now incorporate improved practices for grant fund application.

10

Financial review

Financial Receipts

As previously mentioned, our income profile for this year has significantly shifted as a result of loss of income via fundraising activities balanced by a significant increase in grant funding.

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, this has meant we have been grateful to see an almost 47% increase in receipts on the previous year.

Detailed financial breakdown is attached to this report, or available upon request.

11

Expenses

We are pleased to be in a position where 95% of all our expenditure relates directly to our charitable activities. We continue to operate with volunteer teams only, and do not have any salary expenses to consider.

Within our charitable spend, the majority of our costs relate to vet fees, vaccinations & medications for the rabbits within our care (48%).

12

Statement of the charity’s policy on reserves

Reserves are not expected to be significant and are carried forward to the following year for general fund use.

However the board, with support of charity membership, are developing a new fundraising strategy that will seek to secure a more robust financial standing for the charity to support future expansion plans. This strategy has been delayed as a result of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Details of any deficit

Accounts are managed so that deficits are minimised. This may result in trustee expenses being carried forward to the subsequent financial year before being paid when funds are available, and as agreeable by the trustees.

Donated facilities and services

A number of technical support services, including website development, hosting and some software services are donated via DWB Consultancy Ltd, a Ltd company of the charity’s trustee David Bell.

13

Future plans

We had intended to launch our 2019/20 fundraising strategy, which aims to create a stronger financial future for the charity. A key funding goal will be to identify the means to open a larger rescue centre by the end of 2022.

However the impact of the global pandemic has resulted in a delay to this plan, which is now being rescheduled for post-pandemic activity accordingly.

Additional information

The transition from Fairly Beloved Rabbit Care to Beloved Rabbits had intended to be concluded within the period reported upon. However, due to pressing priorities and limitations in resource availability, it has not yet been possible to conclude the closure of Fairly Beloved Rabbit Care.

It is anticipated this will now be concluded inline with the charity’s financial accounting period, with cessation of Fairly Beloved Rabbit Care expected on 30[th] November 2021.
