## **Achievements and performance**

We continued supporting individuals and organisations rescuing and protecting bears globally throughout 2024 and are now supporting over 40 organisations in 19 countries. We were lucky to again be chosen as the nominated charity of the Scottish Bear Fair organisers, attending their fair in November. This allowed us to raise just under £300 and spread the word of the work of the Charity. They have also nominated us again for 2025

The Advancing Bear Care Conference took place again, this time in person, in California USA in May. It was the 10[th] conference and we were delighted to once again sponsor them which is a great way to raise awareness for the Winton Bear Foundation and reach an international audience.

We were incredibly fortunate to receive a significant legacy in 2024 which gave our funds a much needed boost and enabled us to support new projects for existing beneficiaries. This included helping fund a year’s supply of medicine for Ganuk the Polar Bear living in the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat in Canada, to treat his complicated allergies. The dermatologist developed a special serum for him which cost $500 per so we funded it for 1 year.

The legacy also allowed us to support a new beneficiary - the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, based on the Isle of Wight. They are currently working hard to rescue two European Brown Bears, Balu and Benji, who have only ever known a life of misery, living off scraps on the side of a restaurant in Azerbaijan. We donated £800 to cover the cost of two floating cylinders for water based enrichment and a set of heavy duty weighing scales critical for regularly monitoring the bears weights, so their condition can be assessed throughout the season leading into torpor.

We were also able to support a second new beneficiary - the Arosa Bear Sanctuary in Switzerland. Arosa welcomes bears that have been rescued from very bad conditions by working with UK animal welfare organization FOUR PAWS. We were delighted to donate £1800 to fund environmental enrichment for their current bears for a full year. We were then able to donate £1000 to the Libearty Bear Sanctuary in Zarnesti, Romania - the biggest Brown Bear Sanctuary in the world. It is home to over 130 bears rescued from miserable living conditions and abuse in captivity. Our funding will be used for the repair of their trap cage, needed whenever it comes to rescuing injured bears from the wild, mothers with cubs and animals in danger of being shot. It will also help fund reparation of the quarantine area where all bears stay on arrival as the shelters need to be improved for welcoming new bears in the future. Any leftover funds will be used to buy toys for the baby bears’ new swimming pool.

One of our most special donations of the year was to fund a new zip wire for Boki the rescued brown bear currently living at Wildwood Trust in Kent. Boki recently developed a rare condition that meant he had to have extremely complex brain surgery to save his life. It is thought that he is only one of two bears in the world who have undergone this surgery. He has done really well and to help with his recovery and after discussions with his keepers, the Winton Bear Foundation have paid for a brand new zip wire which will provide hours of entertainment and enrichment. Thanks to the legacy we have been able to support many more projects during 2024

Whenever potential new beneficiaries are brought to our attention, we exercise due diligence and research them thoroughly to ensure they are suitable recipients of funding from the Winton Bear Foundation and meet our ethos and values. We take time to build a relationship with new beneficiaries to ensure we can support them in the best way possible. We continue to support organisations working to rescue and protect bears in the following countries Cambodia, Canada, China, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Peru, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States and Vietnam.

Throughout 2024 we were able to continue our ‘Bears Matter Month’ annual event through our Social Media platform and also celebrated our 14[th] birthday. In addition to this, we have continued our educational work via our Facebook page and newsletter ‘Bears Matter’ which is produced each year.

## **Future Plans**

Moving forward and looking towards 2025 we are very excited about celebrating our 15[th] birthday and have many plans in the pipeline to mark this significant milestone. We will continue to work with our partners around the world to help rescue bears from abuse and exploitation. We are also implementing a new Grant Application process for small and large grants and to enable us to distribute the legacy funding most effectively.

We will continue to bring news of the work of the Winton Foundation for the Welfare of Bears to our supporters via our Bears Matter newsletter and our Facebook page.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our supporters for their loyalty through ongoing challenging times with increasing financial difficulties for many and we look forward to continuing to work together in the years to come, to help bears around the world and protect them from suffering.
