**Beneficiaries:** 'No specific group, or for the benefit of the community'

**Objectives:** The advancement of education by bringing the 'teacher' to the 'learner' in rural communities. Topics will be selected to reflect changing society and cultural heritage. Academics from a variety of university disciplines will deliver a background introduction to their speciality (see proposed programme in Appendix 1). This will be used to stimulate high level conversation and philosophical debate on these topics in a small group setting and to feedback to the whole group (see sample lesson in Appendix 2). The academics and the local librarians will use the session to encourage people into continued learning by promoting the relevant courses and opportunities for lifelong learning offered by the university and the library service. The advancement of citizenship and community development by bringing like minded people together in their own local rural communities to meet and explore topics which are related to the development of today's society. The setting will encourage them to maintain their mental agility through discussion of challenging topics and to develop tolerance and support for different views and beliefs within their community by taking part in the discussions. It will also provide an opportunity for residents to meet new people, and discover common interests allowing them to develop these interests either individually or as a group within their community (eg to develop a local reading group with the support of the librarian).
