TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT
OBJECTS & ACTIVITIES
Objectives
-
To provide quality dance, and performing arts training.
-
To promote knowledge and understanding of the Performing Arts.
-
The promotion of access to services in Performing Arts for disadvantaged young people.
Activities
-
The continued successful running of Dunblane outreach branch
-
The introduction of the new RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) Assistant Teacher Award
-
Adult dance classes for Tap, Ballet and Jazz
-
RAD’s over 50s Silver Swans Ballet class which includes a live pianist, Roger Glass, and the open invitation of a cup of tea and blether after the class. Promoting well-being and community spirit.
-
Our 5 Performers classes continue to grow and thrive. These classes have offered the students many performing and competition opportunities with more arranged for the upcoming year.
Unfortunately, we do not have a cohort of SQA students for the upcoming year of 25-26. To cover the costs of SQA courses MPAS needs a minimum of 10 students. As more High schools offer SQA Dance courses we struggled to attract the required number for the upcoming academic year to cover these costs. The constant SQA verification- systems and course- has also created an astronomical amount of work. SQA claim we should be verified every year because we are a private centre, and while staff are prepared to donate some time to this, the student fees must also cover extra admin costs incurred due to the verification. We offer a higher standard of training for these courses in both practical and theory work but cannot offer these courses for free. There is also no funding available to help cover these courses because they are available free of charge in public funded schools.
We plan to spend this year creating a new budget for running these courses, and exploring funding opportunities in order to lower the courses costs for those who wish to take them.
Sadly, 2024 saw the end of our Drama and Musical Theatre classes. Despite the best efforts of Tom Celeketic to bring in more students and exciting performance opportunities, we were unable to sustain the numbers to continue to run the classes. This side of our classes has not fully recovered since Covid and with larger theatre companies opening in Stirling we felt it necessary to stop the classes. We have been very grateful and thankful to Tom for all his hard work and passion over the years. There is, as yet, no plan to try and reinstate these classes, and we will continue to focus on the dance, and dance teacher training side for now.
PERFORMANCES & ACHIEVEMENTS
Our Performers teams have had success in several competitions this year including qualifying for the That’s Showbiz final in Blackpool in the Elevate and Spotlight categories in November. They went on to win the final, in the Spotlight category, in January winning £1000 in prize money!
The teams also attended the Shooting Star competition in November and also had great success, earning lots of trophies.

TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT

On the 24[th] of September our Performers teams were thrilled to be part of the first Stirling Pride. They performed as part of the street performing dancing on the rainbow road in celebration and alliance of LGBT.
Cost of Living Project
This is still available to view on Youtube. We were able to launch our Cost of Living Podcast on the 16[th] of November 2023. We recorded this in The Tolbooth, Stirling with the money raised from the Crowdfunder page. The podcast was made in the hope that it might help people in the community with some tips and tricks for saving money on things like their groceries and electricity bills. The youtube link to the podcast is as follows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcCk95XH8Fc&t=845s
RAD Assistant Teacher Award:
Louise Murray attended the Approved Tutor training day for RAD – Royal Academy of Dance Assistant Teacher Award. MPAS advertised this course and 15 dancers signed up. Louise designed a course which will satisfy the criteria of the award and make the course work enjoyable and stress-free. Regular class and one– to–one sessions with the AsTAs, will be held
This course is ideal for anyone who is interested in a teaching career – not necessarily in dance as it will focus on how children learn, class management, professional attitudes in the work place and inter personal skills. The course is the equivalent of the Duke of Edinburgh and Sports Leader awards.
The course costs £300.00 but a special discount is in place to reward those who as part of the MDC team at Dollar Academy and in MDC Reception.
From August 2025 ALL studio assistants must hold or be working towards the AsTA.
On completion there may be opportunities for paid work as an Assistant Teacher at MDC or our branches e.g. reception duties, exam music operator.
Adult Dance Classes:
MPAs now also offer Adult Dance classes including: Ballet, Jazz, Tap, and RAD Silver Swans over 50’s Ballet syllabus. We have a live pianist for the Silver Swans class and always invite the class to stay for a cup of tea and a blether after.

Publicity
As we have decided to focus solely on the SQA Dance courses we no longer need to publicise in local schools as most Stirling schools have their own dance courses. Most of our students join us from Monument Dance Centre and so we are focussing on publicising within the dance school by offering information evenings, information booklets and leaflets to all those who are eligible for the courses. We will continue to advertise on Facebook and other school media platforms.
Impact
What we offer at Monument Performing Arts School is a place where young people have a sense of belonging, where they can work in a relaxed and friendly environment and experience the joy of the performing arts world. For many of our students it is the first time they have had the opportunity to be involved in singing, acting and dancing. It is where young people come together as a group where they can enrich their lives, build self-esteem and confidence and form positive relationships and friendships, and while doing all this, the young people can gain a qualification! This is what some of our students and parents had to say: -
I studied an NPA in Musical Theatre at Monument in 2014. Studying the course was a great experience, because as well as teaching me new singing techniques, it also gave me a great confidence boost. On top of this I met friends who I still remain close to to this day. In addition to studying the course, I was able to perform in a musical and a few performances showcases with Monument, which were massively
enjoyable. I am still using the skills I learned at Monument today in my day-to-day life as a Learning Assistant in a primary school. I am able to help deliver music and drama lessons, in a fun and engaging way for the children I work with. Iestyn Freathy
.
I joined Monument Performing Arts School to do the NPA course in Musical Theatre in 2015. The course, taught by Daniel Walsh explored different techniques, acting through song and the opportunity to choose and explore songs that you’ll perform. I learned many skills for singing and performance, and it also gave me a lot more confidence. Whilst at Monument, I made many amazing friends that I would go on to perform alongside in shows for years after. Rhona Cameron
I found my time at Monument incredibly rewarding. I developed the confidence and ability to communicate clearly and in an engaging way even in front of a large audience. This is an essential skill I now use every day in my work such as when giving presentations or engaging in discussions. I learned a lot about working successfully in a diverse team setting, by working hard and supporting each other's development. My experience allowed me to explore my own creativity, to express my own ideas and collaborate with others. Most importantly working with others helped improve my emotional intelligence and people skills as I was able to build friendships with the people around me. Connor Sharp

TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT
Without MPAS I simply wouldn’t be in the career I am today. Not only did the training in Musical Theatre at Monument give me the knowledge and experience to be accepted into The Dance School of Scotland and then further afield onto Guildford School of Acting, Monument also allowed me to learn and create in an environment where I could truly be myself. The staff and teachers genuinely care about you - both as a performer and a person - and will do everything it takes to help to achieve your goals and aspirations. Through my time there, I realised who I was as an individual and what I brought to the table by just being me! Would recommend to anyone - kid, teen or adult with a passion for the performing arts! Aidan Harkins
I studied for my NPA in Musical Theatre at Monument, and really enjoyed every moment of it — from meeting new friends, exploring new repertoire and gaining a qualification in something I am so passionate about. My singing technique improved a lot throughout the year and after my training at MPAS, I was incredibly lucky to be accepted into a full-time course at a drama college and also very lucky to be working currently with Scottish Opera in their Young Company. Dillion McFarlane
Funding
Funding Advice is offered to students.
We have developed forms and a strategy for those wishing to apply for scholarships; this session no students applied for a scholarship. Due to the financial situation, MPAS was unable to offer scholarships last session but was able to point students in the direction of alternative funding. Next session we hope to reinstate our scholarship applications.
Small Grants
MPAS Trustees agreed to make available small awards of between £500 and £1000 to former MPAS students producing plays or Musicals for Edinburgh Fringe and other Festivals. A detailed application process will be put in place after discussions.
FINANCIAL REVIEW CHECK THE YEARS
Our main source of funding continues to be fees charged to parents. Receipts for the year were £28,631 (2024: £8637) Payments for the year were £22,119 (2024: £14,908). Surplus for the year was £6512 (2024: £6,271)
Reserves Policy
MPAS has reserves of £8929 the Trustees believe that three months running costs is a good level of reserves and £8929 represents approximately three months running costs. However there are staff wages, tutor fees and other expenses due to be paid when invoices are received . As our courses are currently under review there may be changes to the activities for next season.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 JULY 2024
Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Monument Performing Arts School
I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 July 2025, which are set out on pages 12 to 13.
Respective responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 ("the 2005 Act") and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended) ("the 2006 Regulations"). The trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation (10)(1)(d) of the 2006 Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts under section (44)(1)(c) of the 2005 Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of Independent Examiner's Statement
My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the 2006 Regulations. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
Independent Examiner's Statement
In connection with my examination, no matter came to my attention: -
-
which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect, the requirements
-
to keep accounting records in accordance with section 44(1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Regulations, and
-
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 9 of the 2006 Regulations
have not been met, or
- to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
