Objectives and activities

The purpose of The Rotary Club of Jedburgh Charitable Trust Fund is to raise funds and give grants for:

"the relief of those in need by reason of age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage"

This means that it raises money from a wide variety of activities which it then donates to community groups, local charities and to overseas aid groups.

Basically, we collect money, we organise community events and we give the money to good causes.

The Rotary Club of Jedburgh is part of a worldwide organisation, Rotary International, which is dedicated to helping communities and enterprise. It has 7 areas of focus which each individual member club is expected to consider when planning and prioritising their activities.

4

At Jedburgh, we try to encourage an inclusive community spirit within our town and support our community as much as we can. The motto for Rotary is “Service above self” so we try to provide a service for the town. The coffee mornings that we organise are dual purpose, not merely fundraisers, but also opportunities for the older people in the town to meet friends, chat and buy some home baking.

We are involved with the organisation and marshalling of a seasonal artisan market which brings visitors to the town. Held on the High Street, it gives our local traders an opportunity for more trade and for residents to enjoy the items on sale.

5

3 A busy market, despite the weather

A number of our activities through the year are focused on our community to make sure that everyone can have fun and experience safe and worthwhile events. We frequently work closely with other organisations to achieve this. In May, during the fishing season, we hold a Family Fishing day at the Hass Lochs with the permission of Jedforest Angling Association and the help of the River Tweed Commission.

4 Young fishers proudly showing their catch

Children and young people come to the trout loch with parents or grandparents to learn about water, ecology and nature, and alert them to the importance of a healthy river system.

At Halloween Jedburgh Rotary co-operates with the High Street traders to close the street to traffic while families are “Guising” - in some remarkable fancy dress costumes, children move from shop to shop where they are expected to tell a joke or recite a poem in exchange for sweets. Rotary members marshal the event and it provides a safe environment for families to enjoy.

To round off the year we organise a Winter Festival. Lead by the pipe band, Santa processes with the Winter Princess, followed by elves and the children of Jedburgh holding lights, up to the Market Square. There the town band and Oxnam Valley Voices community choir lead carol singing before the Winter Princess officially switches on the town’s Christmas tree lights and street decorations. Santa takes up residence in his grotto - where he distributes gifts to the children. This event is growing in collaboration with other Jedburgh organisations.

Structure, governance and management

Type of governing document

The Charity is an unincorporated association. It is governed by its Deed of Trust, which was adopted on 13[th] May 2010. The Club was granted charitable status by OSCR on 23[rd] June 2010.

Trustee recruitment and appointment

The Charity’s trustees will normally be the President Secretary, and Treasurer of the Rotary Club of Jedburgh. These officers are elected at the Annual General Meeting of the Club in the May preceding the start of the Rotary year on the 1[st] July. They are a sub-set of the Rotary Club Council. There is no parent body that is entitled to appoint charity trustees. Each trustee appointed in 2024 served their full term of office until 2025.

Fundraising

It has been difficult again this year to achieve levels of fundraising in the pre-covid years. However, we have managed to attract donations from individuals and we have helped local groups to apply for grants which we have administered on their behalf. The EBay shop earnt a small amount of money and we held a series of coffee mornings which were well attended. Street collections at the Artisan market have brought in funds, but this year we had no major fundraising event.

Activities

Quiz - we held a community quiz in a local social club which attracted a lot of rival teams. Fortunately it was all good natured and it raised some much needed funds

Litter pick - Donning our gloves and clutching our litter picker sticks we tidied up the town before our summer visitors arrived.

9

During our fortnightly meetings we plan events, discuss distribution of funds, and organisation to support. This is aided by inviting speakers to talk about their causes, or to report on how grants have been used. The year we heard from The Rotary Foundation and Jedburgh Churches Foodbank to which we donate regularly each year, and JGC gardening an initiative that works with children from our intergenerational school to grow plants of all kinds in the school grounds.

Young Artist. Rotary clubs organise youth competitions liaising with schools, which has local, district and national heats. Our school entered this competition for the second year, and it was lovely to see some young talent emerging.

We organised our regular events: Family fishing day, artisan market, Halloween, Winter festival.

Marshalling - the market, Halloween, Jedburgh Carnival, Winter festival. We guides groups of children at the Border Union Children’s day, and organised children’s wristbands for the Border union show.

At Christmas we held a joint carol service with St John’s Episcopal Church, Jedburgh. Members of the church and Jedburgh rotary read the scripture passages - and the collection was divided between Rotary good causes and the church.

10

Our High Street traders love to dress their windows according to the season. Jedburgh Rotary organises the Christmas display competition and awards shields to the first and second places. It was judged by members of the Jedburgh Grammar Campus student head team who chose Bella Sicily restaurant as winner.

There was a Christmas tree festival in Jedburgh and Oxnam Parish church for the first time in 2024 and of course we entered a tree, depicting the Rotary peace initiative.

Successes

However, our greatest successes have been with co-operating with other groups. We could not have held the family fishing day without the generous co-operation of Jedforest Angling Association. It was turned into a learning experience with the help of the River Tweed Commission. Young people and their parents, grandparents came from places as far as Edinburgh and many villages surrounding Jedburgh for a peaceful and calm time around the loch.

We are proud of working with the Art teacher of Jedburgh Grammar Campus for the Rotary Young Artist competition. It has a number of heats, local, district and UK National. This year one of our local winners went on to win the senior category of the District Competition.

We have been collaborating with the organisers of the Jedburgh Seasonal Market held on a Sunday for many years, and this has become a staple of the town year. We now draw visitors from

11

Northumberland and surrounding areas who can visit the High Street Shops and eat at a local cafe as well as browsing the artisan stalls.

Although Jedburgh Rotary organised the Winter Festival, Jedburgh Grammar Campus supplies a Winter Princess and very helpful elves. The Jed Shed helpfully provides the winter princes with a lectern and button to switch on the lights, and run games for children who are waiting to visit Santa in his Grotto. The Town Band, Oxnam Valley Voices and Pipe Band give their time to perform in the parade and around the market square.

This year, members of the community council helped to marshal the event. And Scottish Borders Police are in attendance to ensure that traffic is halted. A local Scaffolding firm creates a stage in the square. 2024 saw an innovation, the volunteer group that runs the Jed Eye local magazine together with Jedburgh and Oxnam Parish Church ran a Christmas Tree festival. The opening event followed on from the parade and light switching, making a full evening of activities for the people of Jedburgh. The Festival could not occur without the willing help of all these organisations.

All this means that we successfully collaborated with at least 14 organisations to provide services to our community.

Distribution of funds

We gave donations to 14 good causes, 12 of which were local and two were for disaster relief globally.

Examiner’s Report

Future plans

In 2025- 2026 Jedburgh Rotary will be celebrating their 50[th] Anniversary. Our plans for the year revolve around this occasion taking the whole year to hold little events. We will invite other Rotary Clubs in the Scottish Borders to join us at our meetings, club by club. We will hold a sponsored

16

walk to raise some funds and a quiz or two. We will give members and friends little collection boxes to collect as many 50p coins as they can and we will ask members if they could pledge to do 50 things. We will liaise with Live Borders to have a display in Jedburgh Castle Jail Museum that shows the origins of the club and what we do. All of this will culminate in a Mad Hatters Teaparty in Jedburgh Abbey, to which we will invite other Rotary Clubs and representatives of local organisations.

Meanwhile, we will still be carrying on with all our usual activities.
