Report for 2021-24 from the Chairman and the Treasurer
2021-23
For the two years 2021-23 ASHI remained in the mires of covid, mainly because many of the Board members were particularly occupied elsewhere. There was no action, and no change to the finances of ASHI. There being no motion or pressure to the contrary, it was assumed that the then-existing trustees continued in office.
2023-24
During the subsequent year, the trustees started to be able to recall their responsibility for new action, which has resulted in the identification of potential new members for the Board, people who it is expected will be formally standing for office at a coming General Meeting. It seemed wise first to have a clear restatement of ASHI's position and finances through an AGM, so that any newcomers had a clean, and clear, slate from which to work.
This potential resurgence also generated a small trickle of personal donations, which is an encouraging sign.
Nonetheless, it is worth restating what has appeared in previous annual reports, that ASHI will need to expand its asset base if it is to accomplish the tasks which have been identified, not least specific further water work in the north of Uganda.
Policy on Reserves
It remains the policy not to build up reserves as such, although given the long tem responsibility of ASHI to support development in its charitable objectives of prevention or relief of poverty, the advancement of education, the advancement of health and the saving of lives - which is normally achieved through the development of fresh water wells, presently in Northern Uganda - some small reserves are required commensurate with allowing ASHI to continue to undertake its responsibilities.
Such reserves as are required will normally be held either as cash or in the form of short term investments, although occasionally longer term investments may become appropriate.
