Charity Trustees April 2024 - 2025

Objectives and

Activities

The charity’s main objective is the rescue and rehabilitation of exotic animals. We also aim to advance the knowledge of welfare issues of exotic animals through creating courses/talks and demonstrations which highlight conservation, ecological and animal welfare issues. We additionally use the above courses for aiding self-development of disadvantaged/disabled groups and individuals.

We achieve this principally from our charity headquarters in Nairn, Highlands, where we house and care for our exotic animals. We open our doors for bookings every weekend and for extra days during school holidays. During these bookings, often families, have an hour long tailored

2

educational tour of our facilities, where they learn about our rescue animals and have a chance to interact with our friendlier residents!

Our facility also provides opportunities for local school students to volunteer. Often these students volunteer as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Awards or to gain some voluntary experience before applying to study for veterinary medicine, but we also take student volunteers with neurodiverse needs who gain opportunities to build some confidence through interacting with our animals and then often the public during tours and external events.

Our booked tours provide some of our income to support our charitable objectives, but the majority of our income is generated by larger public events. We bring our educational stand to events such as scouts and guides, schools, public fetes and galas. Through every interaction at these events, we help members of the public to overcome misconceptions they may have about exotic animals. We also offer visits to care homes, birthday parties, and school classes.

Structure, Governance and Management

3

The charity is run in line with OSCR guidelines and operates under a constitution. During this period, we have reviewed our constitution and structure with plans to transition the charity from an unincorporated association to a SCIO.

Trustee Recruitment and Appointment

Our trustees have remained unchanged from the previous year. Christopher Evans continues as Chairperson. Christopher is manager of our rescue centre and had been a volunteer under or founder gg since 2016. ee A'so continued as Treasurer. J is a NHS Scotland physiotherapist and has been a volunteer with the rescue since March 2022. GE Continued in his role as secretary. J is a journalist and has also been a volunteer with the rescue since March 2022.

Achievements and Performance

Statement of the Charity’s Policy on Reserves

This year the charity was in financial deficit and has had to withdraw from our savings account. Following our transition to a SCIO, it is the intent to develop a more concrete policy on financial reserves and to also source additional funding through grant applications, which this new foundation will allow.

Details of Any Deficit

The high costs of energy have continued to have a serious impact on our charity. Most of our resident animals are reptiles they require a lot of energy to run their heat and UV lamps, and we have experienced a significant increase in the cost of our utility bills. The backlog of owed monies from a incorrect use of payroll software by our previous treasurer has continued to have an impact, as it made up a large portion of our expenditure. A private loan was required to pay a lump sum amount; we are repaying in small increments. There has been a significant increase in animals coming in to our

4]

rescue centre, and a downturn in rehoming, which has also put a strain on our finances. Things are looking more optimistic looking forward; however it has a been another tough year for the charity.

Future plans

We hope to continue our plans to improve the enclosures of our resident animals and to continue rehoming those who we can to appropriate households. We will of course be continuing our educational work and encouraging young people to volunteer. The transitioning of the charity to a SCIO will also be occurring over the next accounting period.

Additional information

A huge thank you to our local Pets at Home branch, and the Pets Foundation for their ongoing support. The charity is a part of their community partnership and lifelines scheme, and it is a vital part of our funding, especially during the difficult winter months.
