Welcom•
2025 was a year of challenge for OneKind. But we saw a collective effort from our slaff. trustees, supporters and
funders. This meant we conts'nued to make progre55 for animals in Scx)Uand. And we stsrted a shift towards a rnore
SU5t8inable future for the organis8tion.
We continued to Influence government policy and parflamentary debate. We helped bulld momentum around the
need to ban greyhound racing. We raiseij the profile ol exotic wil¢J animals kept as pets. We advocated for an end to
farrowing crates lor pigs. And we gave evidence lo a partiamentary Inquiry into the govemmenl's food policy.
We continued to mobilise public support and secure media coverage. We helped channel the public's love ol
greyhounds. so politicians paid attention. We raised the plight of reindeer used as entertainment. prompting
cornmercial interests to think again. We highlighled the government's failure to deliver proper prOt￿￿'0￿S from
firework5. And we made oJe8r our intention lo pul 8 slop to the truel 8nd unnece$s8ry gug8 hunt ol baby gannels off
Lewis.
We continued to fundraise to enable our day-t¢>day work. W& had an amazing response to our emergency appeal.
We also saw supporters dig deep via My Giving Circle and the winter raffle. And a core group ol majcy donors
ensured OneKind was in a good starting position lor the Big Give. Such generosity kepl us fired up lo light lor
animals across Scotland. We were also gra¢elul to receive support Irom the RS Macdonald charitsble trust and the
Karuna loundation.
A key ¢hange during 2025 a¢tually involve<l p￿paring 10 hand ktys. We began th¥ proc&s$ of saying goodbyg
to our officas in Montrosè Tarracè, Edinburgh, after ovèr a dacada. Tha mvè lo onlin• working won't affoct our
advocacy, campaigning or fundraising, and it has freed up lun¢Js for 2026, which we will Invest in our future.
2026 is a big year for a Scnttish advocacy charily. The Scthiish Padiament election is an opportunity to influence the
agenda in favour of animals. We will have to build relationships wilh new ministers. MSPS and advisers. We will
ensure they listen to 8nimals' voices a5 Ihe govemment and parfiament deiide on prioribes.

Charlotto Edgar
Charlotte is a Scottish disputes lavryer who works for an inlemational law firm. She joined OneKind in 2020 and has
enjoyed getting to know the tearn and diswssing important issues facing Scouand's animals. Her leg81 background
gives her a strong interest in animal protection legislation and legal cases conceming anim815. In J8nuary 2022,
Charlott8 began studying a p8rt-tim8 onlin8 LLM IM8Ster of Lawl in Animal Law with L8wis & Clark Law School in
the United States. Chadotte shares her life with two hotses and in her spare time, enjoys exploring the beaLJtiful
Scottish countryside.
Rosle McPhee
Rosie has worked in the Compliance, Financaal Crim8 sector in BankiThJ for over 7 years in G18sgow. Roles have
ranged from revi8wing court orders. investygating compliance payments and provi(Jing advisory support from a
Sanctions oversight perspectjve.

In 2025. we secured the Scottish Govemment's support for an end to fftund racirtg and helped shape guidance
to improve the welfare of farned fish. We also challenged the use of cages for mother pigs and captive reindeer in
lests've events, broughl widespread attention lo the retum of the cruel guga hunt. and launched a new campaign to
end the suffering of wild animals in homes 8cross Scoll8fKI.

In S6ptemb8r. we welcomed the Scottish Govemm8nl's decision to back the Greyhound Racing Ioffencesl
Iscotlandl Bill, which would bring an end to greyhound racing in Scotland.
As leaders of the Unbound Ihe Greyhound coalition-formed ol nine animal welfare organisalions- we spent 2025
exposing the weffare i88ue3 inherent in greyhound r3cing and mobilising public supwrt for a ban.
As 8 c081ilion, we Mobills￿ more than 11,000 Individuals to writè to their MSPS and thè Ministèr, urging thèm to
support thè Bill. A mattèr of months lat8f, the scotb.sh Govèmmanl confim)*d its support for tha Ganaral Prinaplas
of the Bill.
We also lobbied at Parliament along￿de greyhwnds rescued Irom the racing industry throughout 2025. In April, we
held a demonstration outside the Scollish Parfiamenl. alongside nine rescued greyhounds, the coalitKJn and
supportive organi$81ions, as the Greyhound Racing IOffence51 Iscouandl Bill w8s introduced. The greyhound5'
prtrsencs $ervgd as a powerful remind&r ol Ihtr dogs impacted by racing, bringing the issug dire¢tly to the attention
of dècision-makèrs in P8rfiarn8nl. In Novambar, wè retumad to Parliamènt co81ititsn mambèrs and rascua
greyhounds. to meet with MSPS to press for their support for the Bill ahead of Stsge 1.

In September, the Guga hunt ol baby gannets Icmjk place for Ihe first brne since 2021 on Sula Sgeir, north ol the Isle
of Lewis. A group ol men travelled to the uninhabrteil island. removing chicks from their nests with tx)les before
elLJbbing them to death and preparing them to b8 sokl as a 50-Gqll8d"d8li¢acy."
The hunt has been carried out for centuries. originally to prov¥Je food. but for many years it has been allowed to
continue due to claims of Iraditi'on. and"cullural S￿n￿Cance".
Immediately after the annoUn￿ment Ihat Ihe li¢en¢e was granted. we wrote lo both NatureS¢ot and the Scottish
Government highlighting the serious ethiral and welfare con￿M$ of the hunt urging that they reconsider.
Followng our letter, we met with senior NatureSrArt officials to discuss th8 matter.
In thè context of an uw)ming Scottish election. we wmle to a115xArtical parties opresented in Holyro(xl to ask their
party position on this issue and shared that infomation wilh our supporters. This also raised awareness of the
issue politically and laid the foundation for further work in 2026.

Stoc¥J Up for Pigs in Parliament
In January. we c4)-hosted a Parliamentary event on the need to phase out farrowing cages for mother pigs
alongside Humane Wodd forAnimals. The evenl was attended by 12 MSPS.
L8t8r in S&ptemb8r, w8 returned to th8 Parfi8ment to join a S(x)ttish Gov8mm8nt roLJndtab18 on phasing out cag8S.
Our lobbying was integral to this roundia￿e coming about. We urged the Govemment to commit to ending this
outdated practice that inflicts considerable suffering on the pigs trappeil in these cages scarcdy ￿9ger than their
own bodies.
Ending the use of cages is one of OneKind's key manrfesto asks. vthich we continue to raise in meetings with paty
manifesto leads. More than 11.500 people have taken part in our traction to write ¢0 the Scottish Government.
urging them to put an end lo these cages.
Se¢urs<l strongèr legal protections lor farn1￿ fish
In 2025, we worked tirelessly to secure stronger protect￿nS for farn￿d fish.
In January, we took part in a parfiamentsry evenl on slrengthening legal protections for farmed fBh and. separately,
met the Cabinet Secrelary to raise urgent concerns 8t￿¢ farmed salmon welfare.
We contributed to the Rural Affairs and Islands Commrttee inquiry w salmon farming last year, and in March this
year we briefed MSPS ahead of the dobal¥ on the ¢ommiil¢e's report. Ouf input also helped Shape new guid8n¢g
on fish al the timè ol killing. In April, we mèt with Ihè Scottish Animal Welfar8 Commission on the usa of 'cleaner
fish, leading lo a recommendation that their use be phased out within ten years, in a step forward for ending the
exploilalion ol wrasse and lumpfish as tools in the salmon farniing industry.

46 events that used live animals in 2024 organised anIma￿free events in 2025, following our joint carnpaigning. This
means that of the 577 events that we know to have used live animals since 2018 a total of 340159.kl did not host
events using animals in 2025. In February. we released an exposé based on footage from eight leslive reindeer
events, analysed by Dr Tayla Hammond, an animal wellare fesearcher with experience studying reindeer welfare.
Her findings reveale(J that 75.10 of the reindeer displayed cle8r signs of stress.
In Novambèr, alongsidè Animal Aij. Bom Fre8 aThJ Frèadom forAnimals. ￿ eo-ordinatèd an opèn lattèr sign•d by
35 animal welfare organisatsons and experts, urgiThJ hundreds of UK event organisers to end the use of live reindeer
at Christmas celebrations. The letter was sent to 315 organisers ol events using live animals. Our supporters also
wrote to 107 event organisers and were instrumenlal in creating a dialogue wth event organisers.
During November and December. the OneKind team, our supporters and fellow animal Welfa￿ groups also
captured footage of reindeer at Christmas evenis acro55 The UK. We again provided the footage to Dr Tayla
Hammond. Dr Hammond's findings will forrn an investigative piec8 for our chann8ls and the Tnedia and bMII also
8SSlSt in our campaign planning for 2026.
Wild animals kept In homes
In May. we launched our Don't Pet Me campaign alongside Bom Free FoutYJat*)n and the Scottish SPCA, calling on
the Scottish Government (o end Ihe sufferiryJ of wild animals in homes across s￿tland. Currently alrnost any
species ol animal is allowed to be kept as a pel. Our Camp?￿n is pressing for a perrnitted list of species that can
thrive in domestic environments, 8 change that would prevent wild animals from enduring lives of captivity.
In 2024, wè monitored online sales and visrted pet shops, to investigate the scale and impact of Ihe trade and
keeping of wild anirnals In domestic seth"ngs, often referred to as the 'exotic pet, trade. We also commissioned in-
depth research exploring the motivations. behaviours aThJ eXperien￿S of 'exots"c pet, owners and other
stakeholders. We found evidence of pwr welfare. preVenta￿e health issues, misinlormalion, forced handling. social
stress. and even death. These findings were then collated and published in our 2025 report, Don't Pd Me.. The
Scale. Scope and Motivations for Keeping Wild Animals as 'Pets' in Scouand. As well as documenting the problem.

We worked closely Mth Scottish social enlerprise and design studio, Bold Studio. to design an origin81, eye-catching
Catnpaign and strong coalition branding. We then launched the rampaign with a padiamentary event in May. Twelve
MSPS from all major political pa￿"eS attended to hear about the issue. Many were shocked by the stae of the Issue
and lack of regulation. We also directed MSPS lo our dedicated Don't Pet Me website. which highlights the key
welfare issues, irnpacllul statistics lo illustrate the problem and our campaign asks. The website also hosts the
campaign's petstson. urging the Scottish Govemment to introduce a pernitted list of pet species. which gained nearfy
11.500+ signatures in 2025.

In 2025, almost 40 nèws oud8ts covared our campaign to and live minde8r dIs￿8YS across tha UK. This includad
BBC News segment on the campaign. fealuring an interview with OneKind's Head of Campaigns and Media, Eve.
This national coverage gave us a powerful plaffom lo highlight the wealth of welfare concems for reindeer used in
these event5 and lo show event organisers Ihal our message is reaching a wde audience.

As the spokesperson for the Unbound the Greyhound coalltion, we were leatured In more than 40 pleces on the
issue ol greyhound raung, including BBC News, The Heraltj. The Scotsman and The fimes.
Return of the guga hunt
We brought national attention to the relum of the cruel guga hunt, with our comments featuring in more than 40
medi8 OUtl8ts, including BBC News, STV News. lh8 Daily Record and The Independent.
Fireworks
OneKind CEO Jason Rose spoke on BBC Radio Scoiland about the weeks of distress animals endure during
fireworks season, urging the Scoilish Govemment to finally Im￿ement the legislation passed three years ago-
introducing limits on when fireworks can be sokl and used, and requiring Iraining and licences for anyone
purchasing them.

OneKind's work is only possible thanks lo our generous supporters. We don't receive any govemment funding,
albwing us to advocate for animals without fear or favour.
To ensure we c8n deliver our vit81 policy and ￿mpaignS work, we must r8ise around £300,000 each year. In 2025

In 2025 our main source of income was regular gmng via direct debiis. ioialliThJ £64k, a slight ncrease from £62k in
2024 and £59k in 2023.
App8815 raised over £50k, an increase from £19k in 2024 and £14k in 2023. This will be due lo the excellent
respon58 to our urg8nt sufflm9r fundrais8r prompled by th8 lai8 arrival of 8 le9acy.
2025 saw us r8ceive almost £40k from 18gacies, a drop from £85k in 2024 and £173k in 2023. It Is cl88r that
legacies are no longer as ￿liable as they once were. hence our renewed focus on other sources ol income. But we
will always promote gifts in wills. understanding the benefit to animals will be some years into the future.
Community fundraising such as the Big Give, Ihe wnler raffle, and My Giving Circle remained stsble a¢ £17k.

2025 was a year when our supporters responded in our time ol need. Our o)mmunity recognised our vital r￿e in
advocating for animals across Scotland. This dedication to the cause gives us strength to build a broader and more
deeply engaged cornmunity of support in the years ahead.

The charity's principal sources of funding are from donations and legacies.
The Slalernenl ul Financial Activities shows nel expenditure for the year of £127,55912024 nel expenditure for the

£272,326 was rat8ined in 8ccumulaléd funds at thè ￿ar énd 12024 £399.8851 of which £108,298 12024
£104,842) was held In an En¢Jowment Fund. The balance of 9en&ral lun¢Js at the year ènd was £164,028 with
£105,019 of this balance reFwesenting fixed assets. The charitys free reserves were therefore £59,009.
In 2025, OneKind raised £232.858 in charilable donations and legacies and eamed £3.651 on the small amount ol
investrnents we hold as contingency and bank inle￿$1. Our expenditure was £365.853. which meant our net
expenditure lor 2025, before investment gains and k)sses was £129,344.
Reserves Policy
OneKind's reserves pollcy is to hokl ￿SerVeS to give finanaal security and to enable the charity to plan and
organise its activities (including new aclivities that may eniail up-front costs) despite fluctuations in income.
Our policy aims to sel a level that is neilher loo high {tyThJ up money vnnecessarily. potentially constraining our
charitable activitie51 or loo low (increasing risk of bw'ng unable to Ixjntinue through financial difficulty.)
In th8se circumstances, and taking Into account possible calls on reserves (see belowl, On8Kind consid8rs that a

OneKind will lead the MO￿ lor Scotland's Animals coalition campaign during the lead up to the 2026 Scottish
Parliamentary election. building on successlul campaigns in 2016 and 2021. Fifteen leading animal protection
organisalions will work together to raise the profile of animal welfare in Ihe run up to the election. The core of the
campaign will be an e-action for s(Jpporters to ask randidate MSPS to pledg8 lo do more for Scotland s animals il
elected. There will also be a hustings. where r3ndidaies from all main parties will be quizzed on pty stsnces on
crucial iSSLJeS, and social and tradiliwal media Coverage.
Guga hunt
Building on our work this year, we will research, plan and launch a campaign to end the guga hunt.
Wild animals kept in homes
We will hand in our p81ition, calling for a pernilted list of species that can be kepl as pets. to the incoming Scottish
Government. We will build on initial meelings lo urge the Scotbsh Government to tske action. With a new session ol
P8rli8mènt, wè will raisè this issue wrth incoming MSPS and drivè political progress. Wè will also o)ntinue to US8
