The mission of the Horshader Community Development Trust, into the foreseeable future and with the support of the people in our area, is to make our community an attractive, sustainable and vibrant community to live in and, by extension, to benefit all the people of, and visitors to, the Western Isles. The Trust has 9 Key Strategic Tasks comprising our 8 charitable aims and one additional objective. These are: - Developing the community in a sustainable manner. - Supporting the disadvantaged in our community. - Protecting our local environment. - Regenerating our local economy. - Supporting the Gaelic language and culture. - Relieving poverty and hardship in our community. - Providing recreational activities for our community. - Supporting the advancement of all forms of education in our community. and - Building a stronger Community Development Trust. The Horshader community covers the townships of South Shawbost, Dalbeg and Dalmore
Objectives: The Company’s object is to promote the benefit of the people of the Western Isles and in particular the residents of the area of Horshader i.e. for the purposes hereof defined as comprising the whole area of the crofting townships of South Shawbost and Dalmore/Dalbeg and by all or any of the following means:- (i) the promotion of community development, including urban or rural regeneration, following principles of sustainable development, where “sustainable development” means development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. (ii) the provision of assistance to people who are disadvantaged by reason of age, ill-health, disability, financial or other disadvantage. (iii) the advancement of education, through the support and promotion of all forms of formal and informal education, training for work and life skills and through the provision of bursaries and training grants. (iv) the provision of housing or affordable housing plots for those who are in a condition of need and the improvement of housing in the public sector and charitable ownership provided that such powers shall not extend to relieving any local authorities or other bodies of a statutory duty to provide or improve housing. (v) the advancement of the arts, culture and heritage, including support for the Gaelic arts and the protection of buildings and sites of architectural or historic importance. (vi) the provision, organisation or support of recreational activities for the community, especially for disadvantaged or vulnerable groups, such as young people or the disabled. (vii) the advancement, protection or improvement of the physical resources of the Community through the preservation and conservation of the natural environment, the maintenance, improvement or provision of environmental or public amenities for the Community, the provision of other environmental and regeneration projects and/or the preservation and conservation of buildings or sites of architectural, historic or other importance to the Community. (viii) the relief of poverty in such ways as may be thought fit, including supporting and encouraging those people who are in financial hardship, or are in danger of experiencing hardship, to access opportunities for employment, training and acquiring skills.
