Objectives and activities
NESSR was established to relieve the suffering of dogs namely, but not exclusively, the breed English Springer Spaniel.
To provide and maintain rescue homes or other facilities for the reception care and treatment of the animals.
NESSR strives to promote humane behaviour towards English Springer Spaniels, and other breeds where we have the experience and capability to do so.
Providing appropriate care, protection, treatment and security for animals which are in need of care and attention by reason of sickness, maltreatment, poor circumstances or ill usage.
To educate the public in matters pertaining to animal welfare in general and the prevention of cruelty and suffering among animals.
Our work is possible by actively fundraising at events and holding online fundraisers. We receive donations from animal adopters, supporters, benefactors, and third parties fundraising on our behalf.
We cannot achieve our objectives or carry out any activities without the support of volunteers.

Achievements and performance
During 2025 our team rehomed a total of 32 dogs, with a further 4 remaining in foster care over the Christmas and New Year period.
Working cockers outnumbered Springers for the first time.
We were delighted to handover two young springer spaniels, Gracie and Oscar, to Durham and Northumbria police dog units respectively. Both dogs passed through their training to become fully fledged Police Dogs. We are very proud of them both and hope to continue working with both police forces in the future.
Gracie is now a qualified explosives detection dog.
At the start of 2025 we were fortunate to be able to purchase an additional vehicle for the trustees’ everyday transport needs. The new truck has enabled us to transport the dogs in our care more safely and securely.

The purchase of the new truck and its associated costs, repairs to our existing van, and securing two storage units fitted out with heavy duty shelving have increased our spending for the year, whilst cost cutting and increased trading and fundraising efforts helped reduce the gap between payments and receipts.
Statement of the charity’s policy on reserves
We do not currently hold any reserves.

We are grateful to;
The Gate Public House, Forestburn Gate nr. Morpeth for their continued support providing B&B facilities, tombola and raffles to raise money for NESSR.
Karen at Groomer on the Green, Hexham for donating her time and grooming expertise to make our foster dogs look and feel brand new when they come into NESSR.

Future plans
For 2026 we are looking to recruit more volunteers to help with fostering, fundraising and administrative tasks.
We will continue to attend events and hold online fundraisers via our Facebook platforms.
Additional information
2025 has been another busy year for our small team.
A lack of regular foster carers continues to be a big issue as this clearly limits the number of dogs we can help at any given time. We often have a waiting list of dogs to be handed in.
The cost of veterinary treatment is also becoming an issue as owners cannot afford to care for their animals if they become ill. We are taking in an increasing number of dogs that are neither vaccinated nor neutered. This cost falls on us before we can rehome the dogs.
The trustees have 8 long term fosters remaining with them, either oldies, or with long-term health conditions, or with behaviour issues that can be managed within the trustees’ home but cannot justifiably be passed onto an adopter.
The amount of spaniels being handed in to rescues, particularly cocker spaniels, with biting and resource guarding problems is climbing at an alarming rate. Whilst genetics is very much a factor, a lot is down to lack of knowledge about the breed and owners not training basics early on. Regrettably NESSR does not currently have the resources or expertise to take in these dogs, we do however advise owners as best we can and will pass them details of a trusted behaviourist.
