## History

Orkney Traditional Music Project (OTMP) was created through the amalgamation of two separate musical societies in 1998. The charity exists to provide subsidised and affordable music tuition in accordion and fiddle in the Orcadian tradition.

## Aims and Objectives

We currently provide weekly tuition for around 60 students, both young people and adults. Weekly lessons take place during school term times, a week long summer school is offered at an affordable cost to pupils and we perform at events throughout Orkney including the Orkney Folk Festival, community fundraising events and charity events.

## Governing Document

OTMP is administered by a constitution which was adopted in January, 2008 and updated in November 2022.

## Activities during 2023/24

Classes operated well throughout the year and our 2024 Summer School and concert were once again well supported and very successful. Our move to a digital platform for registration and fee paying made for smoother communication and accounting. In May we performed in what has becomea traditional concert in the Cathedral as part of the Orkney Folk Festival.

We once again had a presence at the County Show in August which continues to be a good opportunity for community engagement.

We had an excellent outing to Stronsay and we are looking to expand our visits to include a number of the other smaller islands.

We had an active year in terms of fundraising and benefit greatly from the support we receive.

## Outcomes and Impact

Our activities throughout the year were successful. The commitment shown by our learners was, as ever, impressive.

The Summer School, Folk Festival concert and other activities were all very successful. Our performances continue to be very well supported and received.

As part of our music tuition we aim to keep alive an important aspect of local culture specific to the Orkney Islands. Our teaching and learning is intergenerational. This fosters good relationships between younger and older members of our community and has a positive impact on health and well being.
