TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT AND ACCOUNTS

The Trustees present their annual report and financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2024.

Senior Pastor’s Report 2024

Welcome to Hope United Church’s Annual Report for 2024. This marked the 7th year of the reformation of our church, where God’s Word became the sufficiency and foundation of ministry as a church.

In August 2022, we started ‘Preaching Though First Corinthians’ – 2024 has taken us from chapter 10, to chapter 14 of this highly practical and equipping portion of God’s Word, which included such topics as true Christian love, the biblical role of men and women and a biblical view of communion. Truly, nothing equips God’s people and builds His house other than Scripture alone ‘Sola Scriptura’.

This year we continued our Tuesday evening prayer meetings, which entered their 3rd year. These meetings continue to be integral to the life of our church – where we have continued to draw from the work of the Puritans, whose knowledge of God’s Word as taken us to such depths, that I know have blessed us both personally and corporately.

Something we have been praying for diligently since the start of our reformation, was to have a church building of our own, that reflected the reverence God’s house should carry, rather than our current location, which does not resemble a church building.

This year our prayers were answered, and we were able to buy new premises – a church building – in Shields Road, Motherwell. Therefore, for much of this year the church has been mobilised in the renovation of our new building, to get it ready to be our new home this coming January. It has been beautiful to see God’s people come together, with such sacrifice and commitment during the renovations.

Due to us starting to wind-down our current rented accommodation, in preparation to move into our new building, this Christmas we had focussed on our Christmas Eve “Carols by Candlelight”; service as a means to celebrate Christmas and connect with the local community. We plan to bring back our Christmas musical production in 2025, once we are settled in our new building.

I am ever thankful as a pastor to have a flock that seeks after God, is hungry for the truth of His Word, and who devote themselves in service to their Lord and Saviour. We as an eldership continue to trust God to give the increase as His Word is preached here in Motherwell.

Governing Document

Hope United is a registered Scottish charity and a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO). The charity is governed by its constitution.

Objectives and Activities

The principal object of the charity is to present the gospel of Jesus Christ by bringing men, women and children to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ through the proclamation of the gospel via church services.

Base Youth

Base Youth is the youth ministry of Hope United Church and we operate every Friday night for the young people of our community - our pool of young people at this moment consists of those who regularly attend our main church services with their families and the young peoples close friends.

This year we have been taking the young people through different passages of the bible, with the elders doing the majority of the teaching towards the young people, this has helped them learn more about scripture and the truths of God’s Word.

We know how vitally important it is to have a balanced mixture between teachings and fun with the young people and believe we have managed this throughout 2024.

Once a month throughout the year we do different activities such as Bowling, Laser Tag, Mini Golf, visiting historical Covenanters sites like Drumclog and some Hill walks, which were all enjoyed by all the young people.

During the school summer holidays, we travelled to Yorkshire for our annual summer trip where we spent 3 days staying in a lovely cottage and we visited flamingo land and the forbidden Forrest. In amongst the fun we took some time to read and teach from the Bible and pray for the young people.

We believe this mixture of biblical teaching and stimulating activities is ideal and richly rewarding for the young people who attend Base.

Our aim for this year was to continue helping the young people learn more about who Christ is, to grow in their knowledge and understanding of the Bible and for them to continue developing their love and care for one another which we have seen and in fact during the year one of our young people professed their faith in Christ and was baptised which was a joyous occasion.

The young people have also been a blessing as they helped with the renovations of the new church premises.

Hope Kids

Hope Kids is the children’s ministry of Hope United Church Motherwell.

Hope Kids (continued)

We are committed to teaching the children God’s Word and training them up in the ways of God, so that when they are older, they will have a grounding in God’s Word.

In 2024 we continued with our online resources, focussing on taking the children through a catechism, which is a system of teaching beliefs and doctrines that are found in the bible. This resource is produced by the team and continue to be a great blessing to the children and their families in the church.

The Hope Kids team of volunteers love children and consider it a great honour to be serving the families and children of our church, especially during services because it allows the families to focus on the sermons being preached.

On a Thursday evening and during school holidays, including Easter, Summer school holidays and the October week, the club is open to the wider public for primary age kids to come along and the church kids are encouraged to invite their friends at these times.

The club which we put on during the school holidays are free to the families of the community and also includes free lunches and is a great way to introduce families to the church.

The wider church has enjoyed seeing the children share what they are learning and performing in front of the congregation on Sundays at our ‘One Sunday’ services.

Men’s Ministry

The men of Hope United meet on various times out with the main services of church which help them grow their relationships as Brothers in Christ.

They also enjoyed their few days away together which allowed them to take time to fellowship, worship and sit under Biblical teaching of The Shepheard’s conference whilst continuing to strengthening their relationships. This time was greatly appreciated and valued by the men.

This year the men also spent a lot of time together renovating the new church premises which was a blessing to see them be involved in.

Hope Women

Hope United’s women’s ministry “Hope Women” meet monthly to study God’s Word and fellowship together out with meeting weekly on Sundays where God’s Word is faithfully and powerfully expounded. As women we are so blessed to be part of a biblical church where God’s Word is faithfully preached each week which in turn brings God’s sanctification to each of our lives.

This year we studied Twelve Extraordinary Women a book written by Dr John MacArthur to learn more about these women’s lives and how their faithfulness to God and His purpose can help strengthen our own faithfulness to God today.

Hope Women

The women enjoyed their annual retreat together which allowed us to take some time out to fellowship, worship and sit under Biblical teaching whilst strengthening our relationships as Sisters in Christ. This time away is valued greatly by the women who attend and each year it continues to grow and mature.

Coffee House

Our coffee house has continued to be a great place for our church members to meet one another out with church services as well as during church and events, while also functioning as a way we can serve the people in our community on a weekly basis. The children's play area is also greatly used by the kids and families at our church services and for those who come to the coffee house.

Conference Hire

In 2024 we continued to hire the hall to slimming world only as agreed by the committee in 2022.

Financial Review

Reserves Policy

At 31 December 2024 the charity had cash reserves of £55,328 (2023: £168,553) all of which was unrestricted. Hope United Church aims to keep approximately two months running costs in reserve. This is also to cover emergency building work, this equates to approximately £45,868 and is therefore above target level. The trustees believe that there are adequate reserves in place as at 31 December 2024.

Principal Funding Sources

The principal funding sources are collections and offerings. The organisation is non-profit making and constantly strives to maintain economic viability. Income from collections and donations has been sufficient to cover costs and all services provided by the organisation.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) 2005 Act and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006.

It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.

Independent examiner’s statement

In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention

  1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

  3. to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 9 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations
