The charity is set up to raise awareness and interest in specific musical instruments, namely the banjo, mandolin and guitar. The aim is to teach members and non members to learn to play the instruments, to improve their standards, and to attend musical events such as festivals, summer schools, and join the fretted orchestra. The events are not purely educational. The social side is encouraged in order that attendees can discuss a wide range of musical matters as well.

Objectives: (a) To promote the music of banjos, mandolins and guitars to the inhabitants of the United Kingdom. (b) To encourage interest in the named instruments and to assist in the musical and instrumental education of banjo, mandolin and guitar players. (c) To encourage all levels and abilities of players to join a fretted instrument orchestra, including the young, elderly and disabled citizens of the United Kingdom. (d) To provide information, support and assistance to the public and to members of the Federation in all matters relating to the named instruments. (e) To organise events which will further the objects of the Federation.
