## Report of the Trustees
## for the Year Ended 30 September 2025
The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 30 September 2025. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).
## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**
## **Objectives and aims**
The objectives and aims of the charity are:
(a) To advance research into the cause of Moebius Syndrome,
(b) To raise awareness of Moebius Syndrome,
(c) To provide grants and donations to the families of those affected by Moebius Syndrome to assist with, amongst other things, the cost of travel and stays in hospital for treatment and operations including aftercare, and
(d) Such other similar charitable purposes or charitable institutions in such proportions and manner as the Trustees shall think fit.

## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE**
## **Research and Awareness Raising**
Through the relationships established at the conferences with specialists the charity has been able to successfully signpost other professionals who have approached the charity for advice or help. In particular referrals have been passed for Speech & Language Therapy and Psychology.
Alex Woollard, Plastic Surgeon, contacted the charity through its connection with Professor Adriann Grobbelar of Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), and provided an opening article for the refreshed e-newsletter - providing readers with an insight of the facilities at GOSH with a focus on children and young people attending for consultations and treatments relating to Moebius.
The relationship with Dr Bryn Webb, University of Wisconsin-Madison continues and discussions about potential research and how individuals and families might be able to support it were had. This led to a proposal for a research grant being presented to the charity (see Grants).
After the 2024 conference, Kristy Hennessey (who spoke about her own Moebius journey) joined the charity as a volunteer, primarily to introduce and support online workshops for young people and adults with Moebius Syndrome - and also to increase awareness of the charity through expanding the online reach through other groups.
Donations continue to be received through fundraising and Gifts in Wills.
## Grants
In August 2025 the charity received an application from Dr Bryn Webb of the University of Wisconsin-Madison for a research grant into "Defining Epigenetic Signatures in Moebius Syndrome and Exploring Developmental Mechanisms". After an exploratory meeting and terms agreed, a grant of €50,915 was awarded for a year long research project. This grant was finalised and awarded post year end.
The small grant giving programme, launched in 2024, received two applications in its first year both of which were awarded £500 towards equipment and travel costs to see specialist consultants. There are three funding rounds a year when applications are considered.
## **Digital**
The website and social media pages continue to be the key information points for supporters - both in sharing information of their own and also for the charity to promote events and publicise fundraising activities.
There has been active engagement in connecting with more Moebius and other relevant pages, particularly through new volunteer support and this has increased the reach of the charity not only in the UK - but also across the world.
Specifically the charity has been able to build relationships in person and online with the Moebius Meet Up UK group - and Alison Christie, Trust Manager, was delighted to be able to catch up with several families when they stayed at Craig Tara for a week in May 2025.
The charity invested in new database software which includes an e-news platform - making communications with supporters easier and in future will enable online subscription.
A new payment platform was also integrated into the website for the conference, enabling people to book and pay for places online.
## **Conference update**
Initially a fourth conference was planned for October 2025, however it was felt events held every two years would be more beneficial and better attended. As such the next conference is being organised for 6th November 2026.

## **Financial review**
Fundraising and other activities have resulted in a surplus for the year of £5,226 (2024: £21,402)
Total funds at 30 September 2025 are £243,901 (2024: £238,675).

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**
## **Reserves policy**
All funds were to be held for research into Moebius syndrome, with the aim being to have sufficient funds in order to commence original research with leading medical professionals. With the amendment to the constitution, and developments in the field of research worldwide, a proportion of funds will now be allocated towards grants and donations to families affected by Moebius Syndrome.
The charity has very few overheads and the aim is to continue to build reserves to be used for research and donations.
Currently reserves are £243,901 (2024: £238,675).
## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT**
## **Governing document**
The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust and constitutes an unincorporated charity.
## **Recruitment and appointment of new trustees**
Trustees are reviewed annually and each new application is reviewed by the current trustees. All new trustees are made aware of their responsibilities as trustees and made aware of the charity's objectives. We advertise when appropriate for new trustees on the website and through social media - seeking applications from people that will ensure a relevant range of skills and experience.

I report on the accounts for the year ended 30 September 2025 set out on pages five to eleven.
## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity's trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1)(a) to (c) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under Section 44(1)(c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of the independent examiner's report**
My examination was carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
## **Independent examiner's statement**
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention :
- (1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements
- to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations; and
- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with Regulation 8 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations
have not been met; or
- (2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES**
## **Basis of preparing the financial statements**
The financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, with the exception of investments which are included at market value.
The accounts are presented in sterling which is the charity's functional currency, and rounded to the nearest pound.
No changes have been made to the basis of preparing the financial statements this year or to the previous year's financial statements.
## **Going Concern**
The trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties about the Trust’s ability to continue as a going concern and therefore the accounts are prepared on a going concern basis. See reserves policy on page 3.
## **Critical accounting judgements and key sources of estimation uncertainty**
There have been no critical accounting judgements or estimations made in the accounts to 31 September 2024 or in the accounts to 31 September 2023.
## **Income**
All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.
## **Expenditure**
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
Grants offered subject to conditions which have not been met at the year end date are noted as a commitment but not accrued as expenditure.
## **Taxation**
The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.
## **Fund accounting**
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
## **Vat**
Moebius Research Trust is not VAT registered and therefore all expenditure is recognised gross of VAT.
