LOVE MUSIC PRODUCTIONS LTD TRUSTEES’ REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 JULY 2025
Page1
The Trustees (who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act) present their annual report together with the financial statements of Love Music Productions Ltd (the charity) for the year ended 31 July 2025. The financial statements comply with the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005, the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended), the Companies Act 2006, the Memorandum and Articles of Association, and Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102).
PURPOSES & ACTIVITIES
Objectives
The charity is established to provide public benefit in Scotland and elsewhere to promote, maintain, improve and advance education, appreciation, understanding of and access to the Arts, in particular to provide high quality access for children, young people and the wider community to create, participate in and perform music, not limited to any particular genre or style.
Activities
The charity undertakes both concert and theatrical presentations of new and original music works in collaboration with international artists, and develops and delivers music workshops for amateur musicians and young people, culminating in opportunities for them to perform in public events alongside professional musicians.
ACHIEVEMENTS & PERFORMANCE
We want everyone in our communities to be able to take part in the highest quality musical encounters that help them feel confident, nourished and inspired, increasing their musical skills, aspirations and wellbeing. Our aim is to bring systemic positive changes by supporting the development of the community and school singing sectors alongside continuing to make our projects truly inclusive and accessible so that everyone can take part.
In 2024-25, we were grateful to receive: 24% of our funding from donations from individuals including our choir members; 33% from the City of Edinburgh Council through in kind support; 30% in unrestricted grants from Creative Scotland and Trusts & Foundations including: The William Syson Foundation, The Turtleton Charitable Trust, The Christina Mary Hendrie Trust and The Big Give; and 4% in project grants in support of Junior Choir and Sing For Wellbeing from The D'Oyly Carte Charitable Trust, The Nancie Massey Charitable Trust, The Pear Tree Fund for Music, Gordon Fraser Charitable Trust, Jardine Charitable Trust, Dr Guthrie’s Association and The Stevenston Charitable Trust. The remaining 9% of our income came from project partnerships with City of Edinburgh Council and Edinburgh International Festival, and ticket sales from our events.
During the year, we were successful in our first match-funding Big Give campaign, half of which is included in these accounts due to the timing of the awards. We were delighted to be awarded 3- year funding from The William Syson Foundation, and to join the Creative Scotland multi-year funding portfolio for the first time with funding starting in April. Our staff team had been working at reduced capacity since the start of the financial year whilst working on securing funding; these new funding commitments have supported us to start to scale up the team and team hours, revise our budgets and build on our programme plans, especially for our national-reach projects. Due to the timing of the grant instalments, we did not have time to spend all monies received to date in this financial year, which is why there is a larger than usual surplus at the year end.

ACHIEVEMENTS & PERFORMANCE (CONT.)
However, as the operations of the charity will increase substantially on receipt of these larger grants, our reserves will also need to increase, and looking forward to the next financial year, much of the figure carried will contribute to our reserves policy amount of retaining 4 months’ cash costs. We anticipate “catching up” with the spending of our funding instalments over the 2025-26 year once our team is up to capacity and our national programmes have been fully launched.
Our Junior Choir could not happen at the scale it does without the dedication of our volunteer chaperone team. Our full chaperone team is now 45 strong, and for each rehearsal, around 30 fully trained adults provide safeguarding and support to assist the children with moving safely around the building, help the singers make new friends, and provide one-to-one support for the children who benefit from a little extra help on stage. This commitment equates to approximately 1,700 volunteer hours over the year, plus time required for training. Our board of trustees spends around 160 hours per year in service of the charity, in both meetings and additional support activities such as assisting with finances as treasurer, providing expert legal and governance advice and guiding development of action plans to strengthen ED! and environmental sustainability.
Sustainability
Alongside our regular reviews of risks and policies, we added to our list of policies and procedures to guide us in how we do our work. A new key risk we face now we are in receipt of Creative Scotland multi-year funding is the 3-year agreement, so contingency business plans will need to be prepared in case this funding is not renewed. We have been working on contingency planning in case of the loss of our senior management and artistic team through personal circumstances, and this includes expanding our leadership team over the coming years.
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) continue to be integral values for us. We set new targets for our action plan that use the statistics we collect from participants and workers to make informed decisions on how to address gaps in our reach. With new funding in place, we are excited to develop these further and to be able to provide an extended programme of work with free access and support bursaries available.
Environmental Sustainability remains a key priority in our events planning with consideration of weather-related alternatives and minimizing our climate footprint. We have signed up for an extensive training course with Culture for Climate Scotland which will guide us in monitoring our emissions and building a net-zero plan.

PROJECTS
Love Music Community Choir
Our choirs are based at Edinburgh’s iconic Usher Hall and run in partnership with the City of Edinburgh Council. Over the year, Community Choir worked with a socially diverse membership of 422 people of all ages and abilities. Inclusion remains our priority, and we offer a range of options for how singers can take part and tailored support solutions to increase and enable access, including running in a flexible hybrid format, with in-person rehearsals broadcast live for those unable to attend in person. We provided socially distancing seating for singers who are clinically vulnerable, and 42 people who live with health vulnerabilities, are geographically isolated, or live further away took part online. Our donate what you can approach supports attendance by people on any income. As well as increased music, singing and listening skills, our choir members report increased confidence, wellbeing and sense of community belonging, regardless of how they are accessing choir. During the year, we held 27 rehearsals and 3 concerts in the Usher Hall. We performed with Scottish small pipes musician Fionnlagh Mac A’Phiocar, with the Edinburgh Schools’ Senior Orchestra String Ensemble, and we celebrated community singing with our biennial Edinburgh Sings event, sharing the stage with Lothian Gaelic Choir, Loud & Proud Choir and The Cheyne Gang. Our concerts were recorded so that family members and communities not able to attend in person could also enjoy them. We were also commissioned by Edinburgh International Festival to recruit and train a large community singing group to perform in the multinight opening events. We were also commissioned by Edinburgh International Festival to recruit and train a large community singing group to perform in the multi-night opening events.
Love Music Junior Choir
Our choir for 8-12 year-olds worked with 169 children during the year in weekly rehearsals, 2 largescale concerts with our Community Choir, a fun outdoor flashmob and a full day music summer camp. At summer camp, the choir worked with professional songwriter Roseanne Reid, who wrote a new song with the choir. The choir sang a diverse range of music from across the world, learning about different cultures and genres in a fun, exciting, yet relaxed environment. The choir’s diverse membership included children from right across Edinburgh city, with as many places as needed provided for free to those who couldn't afford to donate. We worked with schools to support attendance by children whose parents were unable to bring them and developed our relationships with three schools in areas of multiple deprivation. We developed access plans for children with a range of abilities and support needs, and each term we signed songs in Makaton for those who benefit from additional communication support.
Edinburgh’s Big Sing
We worked in partnership with Edinburgh City Council to produce a massed singing event for 1,100 primary school children at the Usher Hall. Artistic Director Stephen Deazley arranged songs for both young voices and a 70-piece orchestra, which provided an awe-inspiring first concert experience for many of the audience. We commissioned and mentored Glasgow-based indie-rock bank Sacred Paw to write a new song with 2 senior school singing groups, who joined the band on stage to premier the work at the event. This type of event provides an exciting catalyst moment for many children and teachers to encourage more singing in schools, and we plan to build working in partnership with local authorities into our work to develop sustainable school singing strategies.

inspiring Artists Programme
The aim of this project is to provide paid opportunities for emerging musical artists to take part in peer-learning workshops to develop new skills to facilitate, plan and deliver inclusive music projects for children. We want children to have opportunities to connect with music leaders who not only represent musical excellence but also reflect positively in terms of diversity and the project was designed for artists who are traditionally under-represented in the music leadership workforce, for example those who are self-taught, haven’t come through mainstream academic routes, are from global majority backgrounds, have disabilities or are neurodiverse. Due to reduced capacity over the start of the year, we were unable to deliver this project, however we spent time researching opportunities that are available to under-represented emerging artist leaders, and to plan a deeper impact, longer term programme which will launch in future years.
Scotland Sings
Scotland Sings (formerly Love Singing) supports the mainly freelance workforce of singing leaders across Scotland who in turn support hundreds of thousands of community singers in their own communities. It seeks to support health and wellbeing, reduce isolation, build a supportive network, provide training, opportunities for peer-learning and skill sharing, as well as leadership resources including songbooks and warm up libraries, all free of access. Following news of our multi-year funding, we held 3 consultation events with our sector colleagues, and the Scotland Sings steering group developed a robust plan of events and resources to build the programme over the next 3 years. We plan to promote training and other opportunities, to host regular online conversation events and in person training and networking events, and to support regional events which build community and network in more geographically isolated areas.
Sing For Wellbeing
Sing For Wellbeing aims to develop the skills and confidence of non-music specialist primary school teachers to deliver more singing in their classrooms, which will in turn have deep and lasting positive physical, emotional and psychological benefits on the children they teach. There is a lack of opportunity within teacher training establishments to access arts delivery training, as this is not currently or culturally prioritised in the curriculum. We plan to address this through an accessible continued professional development (CPD) training programme suitable for all teachers regardiess of previous musical training or skills. With our funding from Wiliam Syson Foundation and Creative Scotland, we were able to launch recruitment for our pilot training year, which will take place in 10 workshops over the full 2025-26 academic year. Our intention following evaluation of the pilot is to launch an annual programme which runs across local authorities in Scotland. We are also working in partnership with Queen Margaret University to fund and develop a complementary research programme to access the wellbeing impact of group singing on the children whose teachers take part in the training. We believe this will provide empirical evidence that the programme is beneficial to children and will have life-changing impact.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
Reserves
The charity's unrestricted reserves at the year-end were £207,005 (2024: £68,957).
Investment Policy & Performance
The trustees, having regard to the liquidity requirements of operating the charity, have kept available funds in an interest-bearing deposit account. In line with the charity's values, the trustees have decided to bank ethically with Triodos and the Co-operative bank rather than seek a higher level of investment interest. The Co-operative is used for operating transactions, and Triodos for investing an appropriate level of reserves, attracting a higher rate of interest. It is intended that this should be kept under review, taking into consideration products from the existing or other ethical banks, which may offer more beneficial interest rates.
Reserves Policy & Going Concern
A reserves policy has been adopted, based on aiming to maintain unrestricted reserves at a level at least equivalent to 4 months’ running costs. The Trustees consider the policy each year as part of their formal annual policy review. They believe that the prudent policy of maintaining a sustainable level of unrestricted reserves, combined with a stable cash flow position and sound financial management has placed the charity in a strong position to continue to operate as a going concern for the foreseeable future.

LOVE MUSIC PRODUCTIONS LTD NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDING 31 JULY 2025
Accounting Policies
The principal accounting policies, which have been applied consistently in the current and preceding year in dealing with items which are considered material to the accounts, are set out below.
Basis of preparation
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015) - (Charities SORP (FRS 102), and the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102). The accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convention with items recognised at cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant note(s) to these accounts. The charity constitutes a public benefit entity as defined by FRS 102.
Going Concern
The accounts have been prepared on a going concern basis. The Trustees have assessed the Charity's ability to continue as a going concern and have reasonable expectation that the Charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. There are funds currently available to meet all liabilities when they become due and if there are any changes in position the Trustees will make the necessary adjustments. Thus they continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing these accounts.
Company status
The charity is a company limited by guarantee. The members of the company are the Trustees named on page 5. In the event of the charity being wound up, the liability in respect of the guarantee is limited to £1 per member of the charity.
Grants Receivable
Grants are recognised when the charity has met all the conditions attached to the grant. Grants received of a general nature are treated as voluntary income. Grants for the performance of specific services are treated as income from charitable activities.
Interest Receivable
interest on funds held on deposit is included when receivable and the amount can be measured reliably by the charity; this is normaily upon notification of the interest paid or payable by the bank.
Fund Accounting
Unrestricted funds are available to spend on activities that further any of the purposes of charity. Designated funds are unrestricted funds of the charity which the trustees have decided at their discretion to set aside to use for a specific purpose. Restricted funds are donations which the donor has specified are to be solely used for particular areas of the charity's work or for specific projects being undertaken by the charity. The cost of raising and administering such funds are charged against the specific fund. The aim and use of each restricted fund is set out in the notes to the financial statements. Investment income, gains and losses are allocated to the appropriate fund.
Income
income is recognised when the charity has entitlement to the funds, any performance conditions attached to the item(s) of income have been met, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably. Donated facilities and services are included at the value to the charity where this can be quantified and a third party is bearing the cost. No amounts are included in the financial statements for services donated by volunteers. Income tax recoverable in relation to donations received under Gift Aid or deed of covenant is recognised at the time of the donation.
Expenditure
Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to make a payment to a third party, it is probable that settlement will be required and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. It has been included under expense categories that aggregate all costs for allocation to activities. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular activities they have been allocated on a basis consistent with the use of the resources. irrecoverable VAT is charged as a cost against the activity for which the expenditure was incurred.
Taxation
Love Music Productions Ltd is recognised as a charity for the purposes of applicable taxation legislation and is therefore not subject to taxation on its charitable activities. The charity is not registered for VAT and expenditure therefore includes irrecoverable input VAT.

Purposes of Restricted Funds
Junior Choir
Love Music Junior Choir is entirely open access with no requirements to audition or have any musical experience, and free places are given to those who can't afford to pay. Restricted income includes the in-kind support provided in the form of a donated venue. Specific fundraising will continue to take place to support the choir, including securing donations from individuals and grants from trusts and foundations.
Inspiring Artists
This project provided opportunities for emerging musical artists to develop new skills to faciliate, plan and deliver inclusive music projects for children.
Community Choir
The restricted element of the Community Choir activity reflects the in-kind support provided in the form of a donated venue.
Transfers
Transfers between funds can only be made with the approval of the board of trustees and must be in accordance with the terms of reference agreed with the donor organisation. In the year 2025 the movement from restricted to unrestricted funds represents up to 20% of project cash expenditure allocated towards shared charity costs, as agreed in grant funding budgets.
