The annual pilgrimage to Conlalmai$on continues to be the prfnclpal element of our calendar. This year the coach was again oversubscnbed with an unused 'reserve' list of hopeful applicants. This is encouraging for the future, and we have a steady number ol expressions of inlerest for future pilgrim89es both from 'regulaT5' and first-timers. The weather on the day of the 2025 ceremony was exceptionally hol exceeded only by the warmth of our welcome from our friends in the village. Reverend Graeme Glov&r, from GalashK?Is, condLtcted the c8wmony bilingu811y, while Jack translated his own speech for the French after deliverlng rt in English. This effort Is greatly appreciated by the locals. although it aclds lo the length of the event. Bugler Fred Innes was badly wounded on that day but his bugle suNlved unscathed. Our lunch Iwlth live enlertalnmenl from Craig Herbertson, Chns Woods and Jack) was again excellent. The effort pul in by the villagers to look after Lts is quite humbling. The usual rustic roast, multiple courses and an abundance ol l)eer, wlne and soft drinks. The Royal Scots Association Colour Paty and thelr re9imenlal supwters serenaded us wllh their selection of soldiers. songs, including the favourlte, Bonni6 Mary of Argyle, Il's good to see them emerging from their shelll There were also impromptu performances and recitslions from rn8mbers of the company- both British and French. Speeches and gifts followed in profusion. 11 was 8 very successful day. We again held a collection towards the cost lo the Christmas Party for the children of the old 'fronl-line' villages of the Somme. As noted in eartier reports, our Colltalmaison Lunch was IradilK)nally catered by the village's Comilé des Fétss. The profits made from the event helped lo fund the Christmas paty. The bcal community has come to depend on this donation, whlch is augmented volunlarity (and privately) by a couple of our MBT lrfe-members.

The ongoing commitment of th8 village lo our annual visit appears undiminished", indeed, they now commonly refer to il as their'Day of the Year,. Amonq the visrts undertaken durinq the 2025 pilgrimage was the 'Underground City of Naour¥' old chalk mines, dating from the Middle Ages and re-used as shelters by soldiers during the Great War. We also spent an afternoon in the village of Vignacourt, where tsvo local farmers photographed numerolts soldiers billeted in the area beeen 1914 and 1918. The photographic plates V4ere stored in 8 barn and forgollen for more than a century. The plates have now been developed, enlarged and placed on permanent display in the former farm buildings. No one should miss the opportunity lo view them in silu.. It's Ilke Iravelling back in lime to look our ancestors in the fa¢e. Very moving. Jack Alexander also took our coach to Tyne Col cerr1ery, where Bailie Phil Doggart, representing City of Edinburgh Council, unexpectedly found himse standin9 next lo the headstone of his uncle, 4ugh Ross Doggart, MM, who was killed in action in 1917. Feedback for the 2025 trlp was unreservedly excellent. 2. A commemorative wreath was laid In Edinburgh at 07.30 on 1 July 2025 al the Mccrae's Battalion memorial plaque outside the Usher Hall by representatives of MBT and family members of the 16th Royal Scots. 3.The Trust'8 Conlalmaison picnlc table was restored by the village in September 2025, using a proprietary wood preseNative recommended by the manufacturer and 8upplied by Jack last year. The villager5 have a150 asked us lo identify some additional materials (specialist painl and wooden partsl for fvrther repair$. We'll lake that out on the 2026 coach and avoid the ri5klcosl of posting. 4.Lasl year Julian Hutchings supplkgd lat his ¢)wn expensel four new flags for the flagpoles beside the Calm. He ha5 now also fvnded the professional repainting of the original poles, which should see them through another five years or $0. S.Jack ha5 been investigating the Go5t of Gonstru¢ting a duplicate of the Contalmaison Calm somewhere in the City of Edinburgh- possibly in Mccrae's Place, next to the Usher Hall. The proposal dates from 1919120, when the original Mccrae's commemorative plan was pul forward. The suggestion wa5 that a memorial in Edinburgh would encourage folk to travel out to the Somme in order to visit the original thereby broadening the spread of the story and cementing the Gomrnemoralive tradition into permanent stone for future generations.

Jack mentioned the idea to the foremenlioned Bailie Phil Dogg8rt on the 2025 coach and Phil suggested that planning pemission might not be too difficult to acquire. Accordingty, Jack has contacted pol8nti81 contractors and suppliers in his personal neOrk and among friends and supporters of MBT. He still has the original Calm drawings and building plans, so there would be no additional expense for design work. Farquhar Ogilvie-Laing, ownerldireclor of the Black Isle Bronze foundry, indicated that the original ¢lay moulds for the four plaques were now in poor condition probably too poor lo re-use. He was confident. however, that new silicone moulds could be made on-site in Contalmaison from the original plaques without saGrificing any detail. Jack is still awaiting replies and coslings, so we will have a ck8arer idea of the potential costs land any realistic limescalel by later in the year. 6.Jack has also been costing a traditional British signpost to be gifted lo the village. It would have fi.ve finials, pointing in the direction (wrth distances in miles) of the fi've principal towns and cities that were home to the infanty of 341h Division Edinburgh and Manchester 11Slh and 16th Royal S¢olsl, Newcastle Ilhe Tyneside battalions of 1 D2nd and 103r4 Brigades), Cambridge1111h Suffolks) and Grimsby110th Lincolns, the 50<alled 'Grimsby Chums'l. These were the unlts destroyed during the advance on Conlalmaison on 1 July 1916. The signpost would be an original and appropriate way lo commemorate Mccrae's part in the larger formation an indirect bul effective way of showing visitors the broader story. The locals have been kept Informed by Jack and they are fully on board with the proposal. Th8y see il as potentially another feather in the municipal cap. 7.Jack continued lo engage throughout the ye8r VB email and telephone with Contalmaison's conseil municipal via the maire Jocelyne Gougeon and Julie Leroy, daughter of the late maire, Palri¢ia Leroy. Julie left Contslmaison 8 couple of years ago for a new home 8nd career In Brillany bul continues in her role as the 'director' of the Conlalmaison Friends of Scotland association. The Friends themselves held their first AGM in February 2024 and invited members of MB T to engage 'live' via the internet. Cralg, Jack, Julian and Marc remain members of the Contalmaison Friends group and will join in any Zoom meetlng5 If necessary. The Trustees have Sin discussed the possibility ol having a representative attend the French AGMS in person. A final decision will be made before the end of 2026. 8.Jack also continued to engage with contacts at the Scottish and UK Governmen15. City of Edinburgh Council. the Royal Scots Association, Heart of MKllothian FC, Hibemian FC, Railh Rovers FC, Dunfermline FC, Falklrk FC, The Royal British Legion Scotland, Poppy Scotland, The Royal Regiment of Scotland, S¢ottish Football Association, the Scottish Rugby Unlon and Orient Football Club Sadty, the new executive team at Hibernian FC decided not lo support the 2026 ceremony, thereby severing a connection that goes back to the unveiling of the airn in 2004. They have agreed lo send an official wreath and we will find someone who'll be proud lo lay il bul we would hope for a change of mind from Hibs. We've been in louch with the club, offering the opportunity lo talk. Otherwise, it's again good to report that all the other organisalions listed have been receptive lo our approaches and have assured us of their continued engagement.

Firsuy, to preserve a specimen recnrd of our trip for posterity, and secondly lo act as a prOdural guide for future Trustees who may wish to contsnue organising the Pilgrimage after the original committee members have moved on. Craig Potter Ison of Sandy Potter) agreed tr) act as cameraman and Jack has held several meetings with him to discuss the ttinerary and agree a 'storyline'. The Trust will fund Craig'5 travel and accomm(xlation but he has walved any fee for his b'me and effort- which is just as well because we weren't offering him any payment in the first pla1 Trust member Marc Iveson has some useful drone footage of Ihe fields around Conlalmaison and we're hoping Craig can incorporate It in the final Cut. 10.Th8 Mccrae's Battaliors Trust website. Scotl is hoping lo complete il before we leave for France al the end of June. 11. Our 2025 commemoralive lunch at the Royal Scots Club was scheduled to lake place las usuall on Remembrance Sunday - 9 November. Just weeks before the event, however, we learned that the Scottish League had re- scheduled a televised Hearts home game lagainsl Dundee Uniledl lo lake place on the same afternoon. The decision went against a long-standing informal custom that keeps Remembrance Sunday free for Heart of Midlolhian FC out of respect for the signifi'cance of the day in the club's hi510ry. In light of the fact that the lunch is our onty subslanlial source of fvnding, we had lo accept that demand for tickets would be significantiy reduced. Many of our regular attendees are Hearts supporters and given the Choi of the Royal Scots Club or Tynecasle, they would f8vour the latter. Accordingly. we re-scheduled Ihg lunch for the foll¢)wlng wèekend. Jack had already made alternative arrangements that day and was forced to wllhdraw from his customary speaking duties. However, Pamela was able lo find replacements al short notice and the day was a tremendous success, 12. Once again, we must thank the committee and members of Glencorse Golf Club, who hèld their 2025 McCr8e's Trophy and surpassed last year's donation. Glencorse has also confirmed thal MB T has been chosen as their official club charity fof 2026, which should offer more fundraising opportunities over the season. 13. A further golf fundraiser was proposed for 2025126 by our new Trustee, Charlie Bain. The ts'meline has been adjusted and we now expect lo hold that event at some point in 2027. 14 ,MBT's 2026 AGM took I8 al the Royal Scots Club in January. Sandy Potter was elected as our new Chairperson in place ofthe retiring Craig Herbertson. Jack remain5 as Vice-chair. Our Secfelary. Joyce Clark, decided to resign her posf(ion shortly afterwards, having been in post forjusl over a year. We thank Joyce for her SerVe and wish her all the best in the future. We're currentty looking for a replacement. In the meantime. Jack has assumed the position on a temporary basis.
Summary of the main a¢hiovèments of the charity during the financial perlod 15.Jack has continued to engage with his contscls in France regarding the possible purchase of the plot of land in Conlalmaison immediately adjacent to the Cairn. We remain at an impasse on this issue - mainly owing to the non-response of two of the landowners. Last year, however, Jack managed lo find an address for one ofour targets and our friend Tim Hughes, a 8ritish legal professional who lives and works in France, duly wrote lo this person on behalf of MBT in the hope of resolving the matter. The ¢on$eil municipal of Conlalmaison has proposed a meeting about this in June 2026 in the village a couple of weeks before our pilgrimage. The Trustees are currently discussing our response. 16.The McCra8's Battalion Trust 'ballle box, reappeared several times during the year, and we are regularty invited lo address interested groups about Mccrae's. Craig Herbertson, Sandy Poller as well as David and Jack have all to b8 thanked for giving up their lime. Sandy has a couple of upcoming appointments and the results of his endeavours will feature in next year's report. 17,Wilh the technical support of his son Craig, Sandy has also Qonlinuad th8 writing, editing and production of the official MBT Newsleller. which is a useful means of keeping our members up-ldate with Trust 8clivilies and which also gives them Something tangible back in return for their annual subscription. 18.Preparations began as early as August 2025 for our 2026 pilgrimage lo thè Somme. Eddie Dalgleish on this wllh support from Jack. The French and British aulhorits'es had decided Iralher arbitrarily. in our opinion) lo designate 2026 as the year of tre '1 lo Anniversary, lol the first day of the Sommel. This implied a greater degree of Planning and r8gulalion on and around 1 July. LcLally, this declsbn h85 had some negative effects - most notably on the big hotels, which irnm8dialely raised their rates lo unprecedented levels. Our hotel in Arras lof whlch we have been loyal customers for nearly 20 years) effectively doubled their pri - the instructions coming from head office rather than the staff on-srf(e. This was a shock and could W811 have resulted in the fOrd cancellation of our usual coach reservation and a iadical re•thinking of how il might be possible lo send even a small represenlatsve party lo the Sommg. Undaunted. however, Eddie Dalgleish managed lo find a good hotel in the city of Amiens, whlch was able to 8ccommodale us al a very fair negotiated price. Eddie's contribution as our resident logislician cannot be overstated. We are all indebted to him for his steding efforts. We've hired the same coach wmpany (Bibby's of Inglelon In the Lake Dislricll anrj we've decided lo drive directly from Edinburgh down to Kent for a night in England, rather than using the increasingly expensive and Inconvenient Hull-Rotterdam ferry route. APPENDIX 1 Other optional information The Memorial lo M¢Crae's Battalion at Contalmaison in France comprises a fourteen-fool-high Calm holding four bronze plaques that tell the story of heroic action al the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The sile also contains a small area of paving around the Cairn and full-sized flag-poles. During 2008-09 a bench, supported by a financial contribulion from the Wlllie Bauld Memorial Club, was laid at the Memorial site and adjacent to this a large table with sealing was donated lo the village for use by visrtors lo the Memorial and the community, The Orientation Stone was completed and erected in 2013 and in April 2023, a further Memorial Bench was tran5POrted lo France.
