Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period

The 2024 Annual General Meeting was held on Saturday 4th May in the Boy’s Brigade Hall, Crimon Place, Aberdeen. Eight were in attendance. Graham Cooper was elected as Chairperson, Pauline Larmour as Vice-chair, Aileen Taylor remained in office as Treasurer, Rhiannon Ledwell was elected as Secretary, and Ally Barron remained in Office as Club Administrator.

Suzanne Robertson and Alister Clark volunteered to join the committee. Adele Long and Anne Thirkell indicated their wish to step down from the committee.

Aileen Taylor, the Club’s Treasurer has kept meticulous records of the Club’s Finances for the year which she will summarise in the Treasurer’s Report.

Over the year, the committee met on Zoom on four occasions after the

AGM (24th October, 12th December, 20th February and 3rd April) and there was effective communication between the Office-bearers and Committee Members in the intervals between these meetings.

The Club’s teaching activities were maintained over the course of the year, with weekday evening classes at nine levels to be run from September to June, and Saturday classes on a less frequent basis. This most recent spring term, 83 learners are attending weekday tutorials on Zoom and 9 attend a Saturday class for more advanced conversation. Plans for the term due to begin in September 2025 are presently being drafted.

At the Royal National Mòd in Oban in October, Mairead NicÌomhair, one of our tutors, was given the award ‘Gaelic Ambassador of the Year’ jointly with the late Fionnlagh MacLeòid. At the beginning of 2025, our Club Administrator, Ally Barron, indicated that he wished to resign from his position. Suzanne Robertson was appointed as his replacement and Ally and Suzanne worked together in a handover of responsibilities over the months of February and March. The Club held two Saturday Coffee Afternoons (Srùbagan) over the year. The first preceded the AGM in the Boys Brigade Hall on the 4th May, the second took place at the MacRobert Building at the University of Aberdeen on the 5th of October. Over the summer of 2024, the Boy’s Brigade Hall was put on the market for sale and will no longer be available to the Club as a venue.

The Club Committee has continued to explore the possibilities for future Saturday Coffee Afternoons. The hiatus in availability of a city centre venue has given the Committee the opportunity to review how such events should be held in the future, bearing in mind the stipulations of recent changes to the legislation on Health and Safety and Risk Assessment. Over the year, the Club members enjoyed networking with the ocal Fèis, Comann nam Pàrant, the Gaelic education department at Hazlehead Academy, and the University of Aberdeen and its Celtic Society.

Two committee members, Carola MacCallum and Graham Cooper, played an active role in events at Aberdeen University during Seachdain na Gàidhlig. Carola taught a Song Workshop and an Introduction to the Clarsach; Graham taught a Gaelic Writing Workshop and gave a short talk on his recent writing projects.

The Club noted with sadness the death of two of its stalwart supporters: Molly Atkinson in October 2024 and Màiri Steele in December. Molly Atkinson had requested that the Lord’s Prayer in Gaelic be said at her funeral service.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Club Gaidhlig Obar Dheathain

Registered Charity Number: SC036938

Ireport on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2025 which are set out on pages 5 to9.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the 2006 Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of independent examiner’s statement

My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Independent examiner’s statement

In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention other than that disclosed below

  1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:

  2. to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations

  3. to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 9 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations

have not been met, or

  1. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Two trustees are now carrying out paid roles within the organisation. The trustees are aware that their constitution needs to be updated to reflect this change and are currently taking steps to do this.
