Trustees’ Annual Report for the year ended 31st July 2025

The 1st Bearsden Company The Boys' Brigade is a charitable unincorporated association. Our purpose is to provide a Boys' Brigade Company in the Bearsden area in conjunction with the local churches in the area. These churches are:

Baljaffray Parish Church New Kilpatrick Parish Church Bearsden Cross Parish Castlehill Baptist Church

St Andrews RC Church

Objectives and Activities

The object of The Boys’ Brigade is the advancement of Christ's Kingdom among Boys and the promotion of habits of Obedience, Reverence, Discipline and Self Respect and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness. The Company continues to operate Anchors (Boys aged 5 or over in school years P1, P2 and P3), a Junior Section (Boys in P4, P5 and P6) and a Company Section (Boys in P7 and S1 to S6). The Anchors meet from 6.15 pm till 7.15 pm on Thursdays. The Junior Section meets from 7.15pm till 8.45 pm on Thursdays and the Company Section meets from 7.15 pm till 10 pm on Fridays.

All sections participate in a varied, BBHQ inspired, programme of activities, indoors and outdoors, across all age groups, with around 58 Boys in membership, and over 14 adult volunteers as leaders. The Company actively participates in Battalion and National Competitions and other events at national level.

Achievements

The report that follows includes a summary of the 2024-25 session.

All sections were pleased to begin their sessions in the hall from the first week of the session. The company under the Captain planned for the new session using the new badge programme which is now in his third year. The Boys looked forward to a session of activities and planned for the popular PGL weekend. The Company Section looked forward to summer camp in Chicago and Camp Onoway, Neenah, WI. The Junior Section looked forward to their popular PGL Dalguise Summer Camp.

The Company staff continue to plan for the return of Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) activity, which will require the training of some of our staff.

A local school recruitment drive proved fruitful again for a second year and was complemented with our typical word of mouth advertising. Encouragement to “bring-a-friend” has proven to be good for membership again this year with all sections having reasonable numbers of Boys registered.

The Concert in November enjoyed a second year returned to full capacity and the largely parental/family audience enjoyed several excellent nights’ entertainment. The Christmas Market took place on 7h December in collaboration with the local Girls’ Brigade Company. The assistance of staff and parents was greatly appreciated.

The entire Company was very well represented at the Enrolment Parade on Sunday 6" October, with more than 30 boys on parade.

1st Bearsden Boys Brigade transferred to the newly formed Lennox District of Glasgow Battalion in September 2024 following the closure of Lennox & Argyll Battalion.

Anchors (13)

Anchor section was pleased to return to hall-based activities between 6.15 pm and 7.15 pm on Thursdays.

School advertising and word of mouth efforts continue to prove beneficial to membership. The weekly programme included a range of crafts and games as well as learning about the world we live in. The Boys settled in well during the early part of the session and the staff were glad to witness the unlocking of new friendships. The Boys enjoyed squad games including classic favourites football, bowling, uni hock and dodgeball.

Boys enjoyed crafting activities and produced many fabulous items which were taken home. The Boys also enjoyed a great fun-filled fancy-dress party in October, with some fabulous outfits on display. Later in the year the Boys enjoyed baking nights, with a focus on sweet treats which were enjoyed by all. The Anchors particularly enjoyed a night out to see their older Company colleagues performing in their annual concert.

In the New Year the Boys enjoyed a programme of learning about space, including crafting spaceships. The programme also introduced a new concept — chill out time with yoga lessons! A great time was had by all. Chinese New Year presented another new topic and opportunity to learn about the animals linked to the calendar. The Company invested in a new parachute which led to a new set of fun games being invented.

The Boys continued to enjoy fun packed nights as they got to know each other and the group became well established. Mother’s Day presented the annual opportunity for a night of creative card making. Lent provided an opportunity for the Boys to learn more about Palm Sunday and the Journey to Jerusalem. The Boys were pleased to receive their badges and awards at our annual display. Prizes were awarded for good attendance, best squad and best Boy. Transfer certificates were presented to Boys due to move to Juniors next session. Two further informal games nights were held towards the end of the session. As always, these nights provided a fun-filled and popular conclusion to the session.

Juniors (18)

Juniors commenced the session with a complete programme of hall-based activities from the start of the session in August. Enrolment numbers were strong thanks to the significant numbers promoting from Anchors and more Boys bringing along a friend. Activities enjoyed by Juniors include squad game nights, as well as crafting including making their own fancy dress costumes during October. Normal weekly meetings have included crafts, geography, science and the environment, bible stories, figure marching and relay competitions, the points for which go towards the squad trophy at the end of the year. The Wilson Trophy, introduced last session, was awarded to the squad with the most points gained in a single evening, through games and a quiz.

The Boys really came together as the year progressed. Fun and friendship were celebrated once again during a real favourite with the Boys; a Christmas night out to enjoy tubing at Bearsden Ski Club.

The Boys were delighted to be able to travel for the Juniors’ weekend at PGL Dalguise. 10 Boys made the trip with 2 staff, setting off on Friday 28!" February. The fabulous weekend included zip wiring, climbing challenges and raft building. The Boys enjoyed baking and eating breadsticks, making pancakes while learning about Shrove Tuesday, and learning all about the digestive system.

As ever, a considerable amount of work was undertaken during the year to ensure badge achievements were met by Boys. Before the end of the session, the 3 Year Anchors were welcomed to the Juniors and those that attended had a great time, joining in with the activities and games. During the Company Inspection the Boys were able to showcase some of the things they had been doing during the year, including their relay races, and other popular games. The level of enthusiasm and skill on display bodes well for the future. Boys moving up to Company Section received their transfer certificate at the Company Inspection. This Section’s weekly programme continues to benefit from the input of Seniors from the Company section as part of their service towards their higher awards.

Company Section (21)

Meetings of the Company section began in August following a fabulous summer camp in Waddecar Scout Centre near Preston. The boys travelled from 8" to 13% July. A great time was had by all, with usual camp activities complemented by an enjoyable trip to the Pleasure Beach.

Normal activities and classes continued to utilise the Brigade Programme material which was introduced last year. The new programme was well received and provided a rich and varied range of materials. The weekly programme was complemented by early work on the annual concert (held this year 14th - 16th November) in which every Boy takes part either “front of house”, on stage and/or “backstage”. Recognition is given to all participants and competition for acting parts was typically fierce. Most Boys did have some form of singing or speaking part. In November we were proud to provide the guard of honour at the war memorial and to attend the Remembrance service. The Company also provided the Buglers who played the Last Post and Reveille at the service. Cooking classes continued this year and continued to be very popular. A particular highlight was curry night, where three fabulous dishes were prepared and compared to the best of offerings from a local restaurant. This is fast becoming a new favourite activity!

Our team of Officers successfully led the Boys through their badge material, with Officers becoming more confident with the material in its third year.

The boys enjoyed a pre-Christmas night out to Glasgow Warriors rugby where a great performance and favourable result was enjoyed by all.

A large number of Boys braved another very long day (19 hours!!) to enjoy the rollercoasters and thrills of Alton Towers on 21st September.

The end of session Inspection was held on Friday 9" May. Friends and family alike were treated to an evening of entertainment, including games, drama, gymnastics, figure marching and a performance from our pipe band.

All awards and trophies were presented. It was especially pleasing that this included 4 President's Badges and 3 King’s Badges. This represents a successful year’s achievement and a great number to get through.

The total number of 1st Bearsden King’s and Queen’s men now stands at 291.

Pipe Band

All band practices continued as face-to-face sessions in the hall. Musician numbers remain challenged, but encouragingly there have been some new learners attending practice. Some special effort will be required to recruit new learners and to bring the band back to full strength.

The full band participated at the Remembrance Service in November and at each church service parade this year. The band also performed superbly at the inspection in May. The Officer in Charge and Captain continue to seek opportunities for the Band to perform and compete around the country. Unfortunately, this activity has been slow to recover post-COVID.

The Captain and Office in Charge of the band continue to highlight the opportunity of free musical tuition provided by the Company.

Community Involvement

The Hall continues to host Bearsden Primary After School Club throughout the year for breakfast club and afterschool clubs. The rental paid by BPASC contributes directly to the upkeep of the Hall and assists in funding the activities of the Company.

The Hall was used for worship by Castlehill Baptist Church on Sunday 29" December as Castlehill Primary School was not available on these mornings.

The Hall was made available to the community during the Bearsden Festival on 5'" October 2024.

All proper arrangements are in place to ensure compliance with regulations and particularly Church of Scotland guidance.

Property & Maintenance Matters

The planned roof cleaning has been deferred meantime. From the outset of the session the hall cleaning regime of twice weekly cleaning has been continued. Cleaning duties have been extended to include additional time to clean the stage area as it is being more frequently used by BPASC and the Boys. All necessary servicing and checks have been continued, with repairs and improvement carried out as necessary. Recent overhauling of the main hall heating equipment has ensured ongoing efficiency and effectiveness. Grounds maintenance has been carried out successfully, with grass cutting, tree trimming and gutter cleaning completed to a high standard. Routine maintenance and minor improvements were carried out in the bathrooms, with the urinal drain being replaced to an improved standard. An enhanced main door video entry system was installed to improve hall security. Regular visits by Council members and staff to check the premises have taken place throughout the session. Financial Matters The accounts incorporate all Company activities. The Company continues to use an online payment platform and a credit card payment platform, with in person payments also possible for subscriptions, camp fees, and on concert nights and at the Christmas market. This is highly efficient and proving popular with parents and visitors. The platform allows us to better manage the arrival and allocation of payments, although there is a small fee imposed. The accounts reflect the continuation of a full programme, including camps, concerts, Christmas market and the inspection. The Trustees are satisfied with the resultant outturn. The Trustees are again grateful for the continued support of the Hall Trustees, the Friends of the 1% Bearsden and of the churches’ Kirk Sessions and chaplains. Generous donations were received from Bearsden Cross Parish Church, New Kilpatrick Parish Church and Castlehill Baptist Church. The Company Section Senior Boys trip to America attracted the support of the Allander Youth Trust and the Friends of 18t Bearsden Boys’ Brigade. The Captain arranged a written note of thanks from the Campers to recognise the generous donations raised.

Notes to the Receipts and Payments Account for the year ended 31° July 2025

The BB Hall is owned by a separate trust whose trust deed requires it to make the Hall available to the Council for the purpose of operating the 1st Bearsden Company. The Council are obliged to pay all costs of running and maintaining the property. Hence donations for use of the hall by third parties are treated primarily as income of the Company and utilised to defray the costs of heat, light, repairs, maintenance, and improvements

  1. No Trustee, or any person connected with them, received remuneration in the period. Some trustees and BB staff members have received reimbursement for expenses properly incurred and authorised in relation to the obligations of the Council and/or the Brigade programme of activities of the Company. These have been recorded with appropriate receipts in the Cashbook for the session, having been formally authorised by the Council or the Company Captain.

  2. The Council maintains sufficient funds in reserve to be confident of discharging its responsibilities in relation to the running of the Company, all its annual programme of activities and the upkeep of the premises.

  3. The trustees consider that they have a duty of stewardship to enable future generations of Boys to benefit from the company hall. As the building is now 25 years old, the Trustees continue to maintain a Fabric Fund to provide for future major repairs and replacements. The trustees intend to build this fund in future years until the fund reaches the currently agreed target of £90000.

The movements in unrestricted funds across Bank and Building Society accounts in the period under review are as follows:
