purpose is to provide a Boys, Brigade Company in the Bearsden area in conjunction with the local
churches ill the area. These churches ar8..

Objectlves and Actlvltles
The object of The Boys, Brigade is the advancement of Christ's Kingdom among Boys and the
promotion of habits of Obedience, Revgren¢8, Discipline and Self Respect and all Ihal tends towards
a tfU8 Christian manliness.
The Company continues lo operate Anchors (Boys aged 5 or over in school years P1, P2 and P3), a
Junior Section (Boys in P4, P5 and P61 and a Company Section {Boys in P7 and S1 to S61. The
Anchors meet from 6.30 pm lill 7.30 pm on Mondays. but ar8 ourrenlly testing a change of night to
Thursday. The Junlor Section meets from 7.10pm 11118.30 pm on Thursdays and th8 Company Secllon
meets from 7.15 pm lill 10 pm on Fridays.
All se¢lions partlcipale In a varied, BBHQ Inspired, programme of activlties, indoors and outdoors,
across all age groups, with around 58 Boys in membership, and over 14 adult volunteers as leaders.
The Company actively participatgs in Battalion and Naltonal Competitions and other events at national
level.
Achlovgments
The report that follows include8 8 summary of the 2023-24 session.
All secllons were pleased to begin their sessions in the hall from th6 first week of the session. The
company under the Captain planngd for the new s&ssion using the now badge programme introduced
last year.
The Boys looked forward to 8 reluffl lo activltles and planned for the popular PGL wggk8nd. The
Company Sectlon looked foNard to summer camp in Waddecar Scout Centre near Preston.
Leader training was suspended nationally during COVID, and this has limited the pool of qual￿ed staff
to run camps, residential courses. and Duke of Edinburgh IDofE) challenges. The Company staff
continue to plan for the return of these activitles to pre-pandemic levels.
A local school recruitment drive proved frultful again for 8 second year and was complemented with
our typical word of moLrth advertisin9. Encourag8menl to "bftng-a-friend" has prov6n to be good for
memborship agaln this year wslh all sections having r88$0nable numbers of Boys registered.
The Concert in November was successfully returned lo full cap8cIty and the largely parenlallfamily
audience enjoyed several excellent nighls. entertainment. Th& Christmas Market took placg on 2
December In collaboration wlth the local Girls. Brigade Company. The asslstance of staff and parents
was greatly appreciated.
The entire Company were very woll represented at the Enrolmenl Parade on 2V Oclober, with 33
boys on parad8. Fiv8 of our Offic8rs represented the Company on the same evening al a Ballalion
Dedl¢a14on Service in Famey Pgrish Church. Also present at the Dedication Servlce was the 1st
Bearsden Council's Honorary Secretary who, as the Organisl in Faifley Church, led the Officeis of the
Battalion in Praise. 1* Boarsden Company were also pleased lo welcome the Battalion for a BBQ on
1" June.

Anchors1101
Anchor section was pl&as8d to return to hall-based activllles between 6.30pm and 7.30pm on
Mondays. Followlng succ8ssful engagemenl with the parents of the Anchof Boys, a test of change is
underway whereby this group mgets on a Thursday night. This change reduces the number of nlghts
requiring senior staff cover and has helped with a temporary reduction in staffing availability. A local
sohool advertising campaign proved lo be successful with several new Boys jolning through this route.
Sm811 increases in membership continued throughout the sesslon. The numb8r of boys in this sèctlon
has reduced due lo the large number promoting into Juniors. The weekly progfamme included a
range of crafts and games as well as learning about the world we live in. This year this learning
focusos on the geography and history of Scotland. with information appropriate lo this age group.
Boys enjoyed erafting aclivi118s and produced many fabulous items which were taken home. The
Boys also enjoyed a great fun-filled fancy-dress paty in October, with some fabulou5 outhls on
display. Later in the y6ar the Boys enjoyed baking nights. with a focus on sweet treats which wero
enjoyed by all. The Anchors particularly enjoyed a nlghl out to see thelr older Company colleagues
performing in Iheir annual concert. Craft activities continued with a particular focus on The Boys,
Brigade 140 anniversary. The Boys continued to enjoy fun packed nights as they gol to know each
other and the group became well eslablishgd. The Boys have continued to enjoy squad games in the
hall. Th9 Boys wer9 pleased to receive thelr badges and awards al our annual dlsplay. Prizes w6re
awarded for good attendance, best squad and best Boy. Promotion Gertificates were presented to
oys due lo move to Juniors next session. Two further Infomial games nighlg were held towards the
end of the session. As always, those nights provided a fun-filled and popular conclusion to tha
session.

Juniors commenced Ihe sgssion wlth a complete programmg of hall-basad activlties from Ihe start of
the session in August. Enrolment numbers were higher than prevlous years thanks lo the signrficant
numbers promollng from Anchors. Activilles enjoyed by Juniors include squad game nights, as well
as crafting including making thelr own fancy dress costurnes dudng Octobor. Nomial weekly
meetings havetyThJxdedwafts', geographw,'scBnce12nd thei8nvironmenl, bitAeistories,-figu¥e marching
and relay competitions, the points for which go towards the squad trophy at Ihe end of the year. A new
trcsphy Introduced last sesslon, the Wllson Trophy, was awarded to the squad with the most points
gain8d in a single evening, through games and a quiz. Th& Boys particularly enjoyed a new feature of
quiz nights, wlh 'Guess the Soundtrack, a popular addition. The Boys really came togglher as a
group full of characters as th8 year progressed. Fun and friendship were celebrated once again
during a real favourito with the Boys. a Christmas night out to enjoy lubing at Bearsden Ski Club. The
Boys were delighted to be able lo travel for the Juniors, weekend at PGL Dalguise. Fourteen Boys
made the trip wth 3 slaff, from 8
10 March. This included zip wiring, climbing challonges and raft
building. As @ver, a considerable amount of work was undert8ken during the year to ensure badge
achievements were mel by Boys. Before the end of the session, the Year Anchors were welcomed
to the Juniors and those that attended had a great tlme, joining in with th8 activities and games.
During the Company Inspection the Boys were able to showcase some of th8 thlngs they had be6n
doing during the year, includlng thoir relay races. and demonstrating thelr figure marchlng. The level
of enthusiasm and sklll on display during figure marching bodes well for the future. This Section's
weekly programm8 continues to benefit from the input of Seniors from the Company sectlon.
Company Sgctlon (24)
Meetings of th8 Company se¢lion b8gan In August following a fabulous summer camp where we
welcomed frlends from Neenah, Wl to Bearsden. Our Company Ihen jolned wlth theirs for
traditional camp al Bonaly Scout Cenlre, Edinburgh. The Neenah Company wrote lo express their
gratitude for the welcome and hospilalily shown. Our American friends have invited us lo visit Wl and
plans are underway for 2025.
Nomial activities and classès continued to ulilise the Brigade
Programme material which was introduced last year. The new programme was wo11 receivgd and
provided a rich and varied rang8 of materials. The weekly programme was complemented by early
work on Ihg annual concert (held Ihis year 16th .18 November) In which every Boy tak8s part either

"fronl of house., on stage andlor "backstage". Recognition is given to all parbcipants and competition
for acting parts Was tyPiC811y fierce. Most Boys did have Some form of Singing or speaking part. In
November we were proud to provide the guard of honour al the war memorial and lo attend the
Remembrance service. The Company also provided the Buglers who playad the Last Post and
Reveille al the service. Cooking classes continued this year and continued lo be vgry popular. Our
team of Officers successfully led the Boys through their new badge material, with Officers learning to
adapt to the new material In its second year. The additional s¢ope of the new approach to badge work
allowed for the introduction of a 'Newsnight' style activity. with l)oys learning about Journalism and
preparing an inl8rvi8W Style segment.
The boys enjoyed a pre-christmas night out lo Glasgow
Warriors rugby where a great performance and favourable result was enjoyed by all. A large number
of Boys braved another very long day {19 hours11} to enjoy the roll8rcoast6rs and thrills of Alton
Towers on 23fd March. The end of session Inspection was held on 10th May. Friends and famlly allke
wer8 traated to an evening of entertainment, including 8 skilful display of gymnaslics which had bÈen
perfected throughout the year. All awards and trophi8s were presented. It was especially pleasing
that this included 4 Presldenl's Badges. This represents a really successful year's a¢hlevement and a
great number lo gel through. No Quegn's Badges were awarded this year. although there are Boys
engaged on the course. The total number of 1 B6arsd8n King'g and Queen's men ￿MaInS at 288.
Plpe Band
All band p￿ctiCe$ continued as face-to-face sessions In the hall. Musician numbors rgmaln
challenged, bul encouragingly there have been some new leafners attendlng pr8clice. Some special
effort will be required lo recruit new learners and to bring the band back lo full strength.
The full band partlcipaled at the Remembrance Service in November and at each church service
parade this year. The band also performed superbly at the insp8cllon In May.
The Officer in Charge and Captain continue to seek opportunili8s for the Band to perform and
compete around the county. Unfortunately, this activity has been slow to recover posl-COVID.
Community Involv•m8nt
The Hall continues to host Bearsden Primary After School Club throughout the year for breakf8St club
and afterschool clubs. The rental paid by BPASC contrlbutes directly lo thg upkeep of th8 Hall and
assists in funding the activities of the Company.
The Hall was used for Christmas Day 2nd New Year's Day worship by Castlehill Baptist Church as
Casllehill PAmary School was not available on these momings.
The H811 was made available to the community during the Bearsden Festlval on 24th September 2023.
All proper arrangem8nls ai8 in place lo ensure compliance with regulations and particulaty Church of
Scotland guidance.
Property & Malntenance Matters
The planned roof cleaning has been deferred meantim8. From Ihe outset of the session Ihg h811
leaning regime of Iwice weekly cleaning has been continued. Cleaning duties have been extended
to include additional tlme to clean the stage area as it Is being more frequently used by BPASC and
the Boys. All necessary serviclng 8nd checks have been Gontinued, wlth repairs and improvement
carried out as necessary. Significant cleaning and overhauling of the main hall he8tlng units last year
has proved beneficial, with routine maintenance now sch8duled, ensuring ongoing efficiency and
effectiveness. Further Improvemen15 to staglng equlpment was made in advance of this year's
concert. Grounds maintenanoe has been carried out successfvlly. with grass culling, tree trimming
and guller cleanir¢g completed lo a high standard. Routine maintenance and minor improvements
were carried out in the bathrooms, with laps being upgraded to prevent leaks. Regular visits by
Council members arsd staff to check the premises have taken place throL¢ghout the session.

Flnanclal Matters
The accounts incorporate all Company aclivit185. The Company continues to use an online payment
platform and a oradit card payment platfoim, with in person payments also possible for subscriptions,
camp fees, and on concert nights and al the Christmas market. This is highly afficienl and proving
popular with parents and visitors. The platform allows us to bettor manag8 the arrival and allocation
of payments, although there is a small fee imposed. The accounts reflect a return lo a full
programm&, including camps, concerts, Christmas market and the inspection. The Trustees are
satisfied wilh the rèsullanl outturn.
The Trustees are again grateful for the continued SLJPPOrt of the Hall Trustees. the Friends of Ihe 191
Bearsden and of the churches, Kirk Sessions and chaplains.

The BB Hall is owned by a separate trust whose Irust deed requires il to mak& the H8118vail8ble lo
the Counal for the purpose of operatlng the 1Ut Bearsden Company. The Council are obliged to pay all
costs of running and maintaining the propety. Hence donalions for use of the hall by third p8rt18s are
treated primarily as income of the Company and utilised to defray the costs of heat, light, repairs,
maintenance, and Improvements
No Trustee, or any person connected with them, received remuneratlon In the period. Som8
Iruslees and BB staff members have received reimbursemenl for expenses properly ir)¢urred and
aulhorised in relalton to the obligallong of the Council andlor the Brigade programme of activities
of the Company. These have been recorded with appropriat6 recelpts in the Cashbook for the
sessron, having been fomialty authorised by the Council or the Company CBplain.
2. The Coun¢il maintains sufficient funds in reserve lo be confident of discharging its responsibilities
In relation to the running of the Company, all ils annual programme of activilitss and the upkeep of
the premises.
3. Tho trustees consider that Ihey have a duty of stewardship to enable future generations of Boys
lo beneflt from the company hall. As the building is now 25 years old, the Trustees continue to
malntain a Fabric Fund to provide for future major repairs and replacements. The Iruste8s intend
to bulld this fund in futur6 y6ars until the fund reaches th8 currently agreed target of £90000.
