Structure, governance and management
Bruichladdich Hall Committee was established in 1939 by a trust deed and was registered as a Scottish Charity in July 2004. The committee is governed by its Constitution which was last reviewed in January 2023. All members of the committee are trustees of the charity.
There is no formal end date to appointments of trustees, though at each AGM all the trustees are required to step down. They are eligible for re-election at the AGM.
The Committee meets regularly to monitor activities, supplies, building fabric, finance and any issues that require discussion. All meetings are minuted, and a publicly advertised AGM is held annually.
Objectives and activities
The charitable purposes of the organization are "To provide, or assist in the provision of, facilities, in the interest of social welfare, for recreation or other leisure time occupation in an effort to improve the conditions of life of the inhabitants of Bruichladdich and surrounding area”.
In practice the hall is let out to various local groups for regular activities, e.g. Pilates, Karate, Craft Fair and for one-off events such as parties and concerts. The fees cover the maintenance and running costs of the hall.
Achievements and Performance
After the major refurbishment of the hall last year, bookings were up compared to the previous year and there was no need to carry out any maintenance though several enhancements and new requirements were identified. The major achievement was the resolution of a dispute with our electricity supplier resulting in a large credit and the installation of a smart meter to avoid future issues. The hall has also been the recipient of solar panels as part of the Scottish Government’s Carbon Neutral Islands project which will reduce our expenditure and should contribute some income.
Financial Review
As noted above, the only major expenditure was on electricity, including the costs of dispute resolution, but this has now resulted in a large credit of £12,000 to be carried forward. Donation income was well up, thanks largely to the generosity of Friends of Bruichladdich, who held a fundraising tasting. Income from regular users rose by some 40% now that the hall has been refurbished, though there was fall in “one-off” events. At the end of the year the bank balance stood at £10,274.
Plans for Future
The major development is to launch a website for the hall which will make it easier for prospective users to see what facilities there are and provide a form for doing so along with a visible calendar of events. This in turn will oblige us to be more formally organized. Several repairs and enhancements have been identified, including door replacement (for energy efficiency), new chairs, regular cleaning arrangements and ensuring that the hall meets modern standards for electrical and fire regulations.
Although the hall’s constitution was revised in 2023, the current committee would like to review it again as it would be beneficial to move to being a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organization (SCIO) at some point in the future.

OSCR Report of Financial Examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) 2005 Act and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply.
It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006
An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.
In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention except noted below)
which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements: to keep accounting records in accordance with section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations, and
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 9 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations have not been met, or
to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
