TRUSTEES REPORT OF 1[st] ALVA SCOUT GROUP
The Trustees Board of 1[st] Alva Scout Group has pleasure in presenting their Annual Report together with the Financial Statements and the Independent Examiner’s Report for the year ended 31 March 2026
OBJECTIVES
The Scout Association is a UK-wide charitable body, incorporated by Royal Charter. Its aim is to promote the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities. The method of achieving the aim of the Association is by providing an enjoyable and attractive scheme of progressive training based on the Scout Promise and Law and guided by adult leadership.
This is achieved through the Scout Method which states that “Scouting takes place when young people, in partnership with adults, work together based on the values of Scouting”.
-
enjoy what they are doing and have fun;
-
take part in activities indoors and outdoors;
-
learn by doing;
-
share in spiritual reflection;
-
take responsibility and make choices;
-
undertake new and challenging activities;
-
and make and live by their Promise.
We are guided by the Values of Scouting which are:
-
I ntegrity : We act with integrity; we are honest, trustworthy and loyal.
-
Respect: We have self-respect and respect for others.
-
Care : We support others and take care of the world in which we live.
-
Belief : We explore our faiths, beliefs and attitudes.
-
Co-operation: We make a positive difference; we co-operate with others and make friends.
-
In line with the Scout Association, our goals to 2026 are based around achieving:
-
Growth: enabling more young people and adult volunteers to benefit from Scouting and
-
the skills it gives them.
-
Inclusivity: ensuring barriers to inclusion are removed and working to build tolerance.
-
Community impact: making a difference in our local and global community.
-
Youth-shaped: ensuring our young people get a voice in Scouting, share their experiences
-
and take on leadership roles.

ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE
The Scout Group is constituted in terms of the Rules of The Scout Association, which is a charitable body incorporated by Royal Charter. The Trustees Board meets three times per annum.
ACCOUNTS
Financial statement for the year from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026 is appended.
VOLUNTEERS
Scouting in Alva depends entirely on the efforts of volunteers. The Trustees Board recognises the considerable time and effort given by the many uniformed and non-uniformed adults in the Group in order to provide good Scouting for our Young People and thanks them for all their commitment.
The Group Board of Trustees exists to ensure Scouting is run safely, legally and in line with our charitable purpose. They are confident that:
The charity is well managed, carrying out its purpose for the public benefit.
-
Our activities comply with our governing document and the law.
-
We are following POR and the rules of the Charity Regulator (OSCR).
-
Young people are meaningfully involved in decision making at all levels
-
The Group has sufficient resources to meet any planned work of the Group.
The Group has systems that are designed to provide reasonable assurance against material mismanagement and loss. These include requiring two signatories for all payments made by any section within the Group, expenditure of a certain amount being approved by a wider group of leaders, maintaining a risk register of potential risks to the charity and mitigating against these and insurance policies to ensure that insurable risks are covered.

CHAIRPERSONS REPORT
This year has been a difficult year. Unfortunately I was not been able to devote as much time to the Group as I have done in previous years, due to Gordon’s progressing illness. The leaders have been great and supported me through this busy year.
We have adhered by all the statutory requirements, so there are no worries there.
We have submitted a claim for Gift aid on our weekly and annual subscriptions for the period 2024 - 2026. This will boost our funds by £2158 this year.
We also received £3364 from EDF Burnfoot Foundation to install thermal lined curtains to improve the insulation and heat retention in our hall.
The Group also supported the Alloa Round Table during the Alloa Half Marathon. The Scouts manned the water point in Alva and we received a donation of £500, which was put towards the upkeep of the hall.
The Group also participated in the Nebit Walk, organised by the Alloa Rotary Club and £286 was raised.
In February this year we discovered rotten joists and wet rot on the north side of the main hall floor. We got 3 companies to quote for this and submitted a funding application to Burnfoot Hill Wind Farm Community Fun. We are pleased to say that we have secured £5000 towards the repair costs
The Trustees Board normally meets three times a year to discuss the wellbeing of the Group. New members are always welcome. Finally, thanks to all the Team members, and parent helpers for their support to all our events. A special thank you to Martin Dunsmore for auditing our accounts.
Loes McEwan Chairperson
GROUP REPORT
This has been another busy year for the Group. Starting with our annual Group Camp, held at the Barrwood Scout Camp site for the first time in a few years. We also took the opportunity to use our older “heavyweight” tents, which all the Cubs and Scouts seemed to enjoy.
Over the course of the year, the sections have enjoyed a wide range of activities, including visits from the Japanese Gardens, soft archery, science experiments, pioneering, fire lighting, diy, and cooking. We also had all sections in mixed teams at the bowling for their Christmas Party. This year saw the 40th Anniversary of Beavers, and the 110th anniversary of Cubs. Both sections had the opportunity to celebrate with other Beavers and Cubs at the Barrwood Scout Camp site

.
Numbers are generally low across all the sections, so if you know of anyone who would be interested in joining Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, or as a leader please let us know.
My thanks go to all the children, the Leader Teams, the Trustees, and Loes. Without all these volunteers, the Group wouldn’t function.
Gavin Muirhead Team Leader
