Achlevements and performance
Slgnificant activitles and achievements against otyeCfi￿es
2025 has been a steady ye8r for Orkney Hyperbaric Unil. The amount of recreational diving in Orkney waters has
been similar to the last lew years. There are currently 5 dive boats operating regularly out of Slromness for
recreational divers. As has been the case in recent years, a nurnber of local dive-boats spend part of the earfy
summer operabng outside Orkney w*ers. parhcularfy In Shetland. the west coast of Scotland and Scandinavia. This
means that the volume of recreational diving activity in Orkney water tends lo In¢￿a&¢I￿ter In the Summer. The
season has gradually extended wtlh a number of boats operating well into NoveTnber and one operating in
December this year. In general, as one would expect, the number of Cases we se8 tfjnds to mirror thg amount of
diving activity. In Orkney we can expect an incidence of decompression Nlness at bèiwèèn 1 and 1.5 eases11000
recreallonal dives. This estlmale Is based on detsiled dive boat return figurès whlch w8 have ¢olle¢¢ed on a number
of occasions over the past 25 years. There has been a steady inerèas6 in comm6rclal dlving over the same time
period. The scallop dlving sector conllnues lo thrive In Orkney waters. The￿ h8s also been an Increase In the
nurnber of salmon farms, all of which are servi<%d with surf8ce supply divers. The marina energy secior has
continued to expand and the development of offshore wnd famis. particularfy the west of Orkney windfarm, ￿1[
require extensive dlvlng supporL
There were 20 significant incidents which presented lo the servicè in 2025.
17 divers with decornpres8ion illness were r8compre88ed. One of these, a dlver wlth a splnal bend, requlred
subsequent transfer to Aberdeen for further Irealmenl. A diver wth 8 vgslibul8r bènd rèquirad a rèpeat trèatmenL
One diver, with musculoskeletal pain. who Presented when the chamber was lemporadly offllne, was successfully
Ireal¢d ￿th surfact oxygen. On• diytsr with immersion pulmonary 0￿¢rna was as¥c?¥cd and tran•f¢rr¢d to th¢
Balfour Hospital where he made a good recovery. Sadly there was one in-wat8r dè8th.
Trainin
All siaff must undertake core trdining Modules each year. Thesg Include a tralning chamber dive, Baslc Llfe Support
training, medical emergencies training. fire safety and a personal medical assessment from the medical director. We
h8ve also added a movlng and handlSng module. All staff musl have valid up lo date PVG ¢le¥ran¢e. Nr) member of
stsff can be on the rota unless they have satisfactorily completed all of thèsa modules. Addltlonal refresher trainlng
Is avalkble to 811 st8ff on any subject throughout the year on request. The OHT medical rnanual was updated last
yaar. Dr Palmer has updated the module on the managernent of a cardlsc 8rr&st In the Chamber and this protocol
will be induded In the next edition of the m8nu81. All members of staff have a copy of the OHT medical manual
which contains all of th& modules. These are also available on4ine in th8 staff sèction of thè w8bsita. Wè us6
Mlcrosoft Teams to er>ntlnue regular training updates and have joint S8ssions with the Aberdeen unit three times a
year. In addlllon. the Diving Diseas95 Research Centre in Plymouth have siarted an online journ81 club which is held
every tsvo-lhree months. The Increased opportunStSes to share cases. issues and protocols ￿th other chamber8
throughout the UK has been a very posltlve development.
The European Baromedlcal Soe16ty meetlng was held in September in Hel$inki.11 was 811gnded by Rabekah Palmer
and Kalh Pye. Dr Palmer presented a poster al the conference which was well received. The British Hyperbaric
Association was held in early Novernber In Birmingham. This was attended by Brett Taylor and Karen Seatter.

Audit
The Orkney unil had its three year annual rovlew In November 2025 carried out by Chris Skinner. Corfnn8 Johnson
and Scott Graham from James Fisher Defence. We are awaiting the final report but the vislt Went W911 and the initi31
vorbal interim report was very satisfaclory. W8 find th858 vlsits 8xlremely vseful, as a geographlcally remote untt,
external formative assessm8nt is, In OLJr wew, essential. In addition we have a six monthly audlt carried out by NHS
Orkney infection control team.
OHU submits reports as part of our SLAwth Grampian èvèry six months.
Liaison Prevention and Future Plannin
OHT remains committed lo working wSlh other agencles to Improve dlvlng safety. The unll conllnues lo partl¢lp8le
with other relevant agencies lo reduce the number of dlvSng accSdents in Orkney walers and to improve the triage
and management of aeeidents whleh occur. There havo been a couple of exariisès this yÈ8r involving MCA and
Ilfeboat crews. It remalns ch8llenging to gèl 811 parties to work cohe8lv81y but it is hoped that maintaining dialogue
and the inleraction generated by training exercises will prornole better understanding of each agency's role and
better le8m working.
Maintenance and Develo
ment of the Facili
2025 has been the fifteenth year of use of the new chamber. We h8ve a five-year rolling maintenance schedule
contract wlh SMP who built the chamber. The next planned visit 15 in Febrvary 2026. The manufadurer estsmale5
the lifespan of the triple lock chamber as around 30 years- the potential issue at th15 Blage becomlng replacement
of parts rather than any issue with the structural integrity of the chamber itself. The garage alongside the chamber
building 15 to become vacant In M8r¢h 2026 and we hav8 agr88d to take this over. This will function as a store for
storing oyllndérs and equlpmenl. a spaea for setvlcing equlpment and will also protect emergency a￿$S lo the
d1am￿r bulldlng. Tha lease for the garage is lo be included in our new lease whi¢h we hope to sKJn eariy In 2026.
The lease for the charnber building wth ORIC (Orkney Resgarch and Innovation Campus) has recently expired. We
have an agreement for the ￿8$e lo be renèwed for a tèn year period (see below). OHT has suificient financial
reserves to rneel the cost of the servlce having to mov& sit8 should this ever be ￿qUIred although there Is no
anlicipalion of this. These reserves are 8150 in pl8¢e to meèt the future capStal costs of replacing equipment
induding the ohamber itself. Financial reserves are cU￿entlY splll between fixed rate bonds 8nd a medium risk
ethlcal pothlio investment managed by R¢)wan Dartington.
Research
The English chambers vtho are members of the Brftlsh Hyperbarfc Assoclatlon all contribLrte data to an electronic
database using the 'Red¢ap' IResear¢h Ele¢tronlc Data Capture) software. This has been approved by NHS
England subject to 8 58ries of saf89uard$ to protect data in a¢¢ordanc* wth GOPR. Th8 d8lab8se covers a range
ol indications for hyperbaric treahmenl and 18 designed to ¢¢llate Information about treatments and outcomes. We
believe that the diving Illntsss seclSon of the database could be a useful resource for the Scotush chamber5 and that
we should conlrlbul8 as members of the Britlsh Hyperbaric Association to improve audit and kno￿edge in an area
with relatively small numbers of cas8s natlonwide. The adoption of Redcap in Scotland, as a separate jurisdiction,
would require approv81 from Nauonal Sarvlcas Seot12nd (NSSI in partiojlar with ￿gard lo data security. Andrew
Trevett raised this issue 8t the Scottish cllnlcal leads meeting and has asked the head of service lo discuss this with
Natlon81 Servlces Scotland.

has conslsted of three cenlres, Aberdeen, Orkney and Ob8n. The servlce In Oban was suspended in March 2024.
All health boards in S¢oU¥nd ar¢ "top-sliced. to fund nationally designated spe¢ialis158rvi<xs but Ih8y no longer
meet itemised indlvidual treatment costs of Scottish resldents trolled al Scottlsh treatment faclltties. NHS England
transfers a block payment lo National Services Scolland for the Iroatment of Engllsh dlvers. A share of the central
fundlng Is distributed to Orkney land formedy to Obanl through NHS Grampian on a contract basis. This sy316m has
been conslderably les5 buraaucratic for OHT than bllling Indivldual health boards for individu81 treatment Costs. The
transfer of funding is made from NSS via Grampian health boaTd lo Slromness surgery. Two thlrds of the funding
re￿iVed is transferred lo OHT, one thlrd retsSned ty the surgery for funding the medlc81 rot8.

ourrent activities while considerallon Is given to ways in whlch additional fvnds may be ralsod.
