Gullane Scout Group - Year Ended 31[st] August 2025

Chairman’s Overview

Gullane Scout Group goes from strength to strength with a supportive Exec and a great group of volunteers across the sections. Each week around 70 young people are involved in scouting in Gullane. There are challenges for the year ahead (such as the ongoing hunt for a long-term equipment storage solution), but we are in a strong position to meet these, especially with respect to our finances and volunteers.

As planned, we did not hold our main fundraising event of a Jumble Sale this year, as there had been three sales in the last two years, but it will return to help the village declutter again in 2026. The group’s bank balance is healthy and we have continued to look for ways to target spend on those most in need in the local scouting community or potential community – in particular by holding subs for a further year, providing subsidised places and financially supporting external trips.

The Beavers section ran at capacity for the full year with a full waiting list – which unfortunately leaves some unable to join. For most of the year, Jane has been ably supported by a team of 4 Section Team Members and with the assistance of Ella Martin, who has been helping as part of volunteering for Bronze DofE. Towards the end of the year we said a fond farewell to leaders Olly Molyneux and Mark Shilton in December 2025 and a temporary farewell to Graham Ayers in June 2025. The current leaders are Jude Leslie, Jane Tyrrell and Katie Joshi, but we are looking forward to Graham Ayres returning to the fold in March 2026. Since the new academic year, Jude and Jane are successfully job-sharing the role of Section Leader taking it in turns to run the programme and deal with parent comms. The Beavers have enjoyed the usual full and varied programme and a further 7 Beavers have earned the Chief Scout’s Bronze Award

In Gullane the Cubs section offers Scouting to all from the age of 8.5 to 11. With the change in Scout leadership in Summer 2024, Nick has stepped into a more supervisory role for both Cubs and Scouts and Claire has stepped up to be the Section Team Leader for Cubs. For much of the year she has been supported by the very enthusiastic team of Amy and Neil. As a section we have up to 32 Cubs getting involved in all sorts of activities weekly on a Friday evening. In addition to the usual camp at Canty Bay in June, 24 cubs were successful in the ballot to go to The Howling on the weekend on 19th-21st September, financially supported by the Group. The Cubs are busy as ever with lots of badge work (including money skills, environmental and water safety) and other fun activities (including night hikes) over the past year.

The Scout section is entering a new era, as David (Skip) decided to retire from Scouting in Summer 2024. Graham has taken over as Section Team Leader with the support of Group Lead Volunteer Nick and Section Team Members Matt and Connal (who has returned after his six months travelling in New Zealand, and is also helping with Cubs). Numbers have fluctuated as Scouts join and leave throughout the year, but the current head count is 19, with a regular attendance of 10-13 which is manageable, but we would like to see more. The Scouts are following the varied programme which has been developed with some help from the Scouts on their choice nights. Friday evening activities have included: communication with flags, firing rockets (!), a beach clean, a joint night hike with the Cubs, night golf, and a talent night with the Cubs. The big event of Summer 2025 was a camp at Bonaly in August. Scouts hiked from the centre of town, followed the canal and pitched up tents at the campsite.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of the Gullane Scout Group

Respective responsibilities of the Trustees and Examiner

The group’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 (“the Act”) and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (“the Regulations”). The group’s trustees consider that the audit requirement of regulation 10(1)(d) does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1)(c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of Independent Examiner’s Statement

My examination is carried out in accordance with the Regulations. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the group and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items of disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Independent Examiner’s Statement

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:-
