Purpose
The City of Inverness Youth Pipe Band (“the band”) exists to offer young people in Inverness and surrounding areas the opportunity to be part of a pipe band, with weekly tutoring from experienced pipe and drumming tutors during weekly practice sessions within school term times. The band members who reach performing standard are encouraged to take part in band performances and competitions. These help to build skill and confidence in the young people.
Activities and achievements
The main activities are weekly tutoring for school aged learner pipers and drummers. These take place during school term time on Monday evenings between 6:30-7:30pm followed by performance practice for the more advanced level pipers and drummers between 7:30-8:30pm. Most of the learner pipers and drummers progress up to the performing band.
During the year 2nd November 2024 to 1st November 2025 the band performed at a number of events including the Inverness Vintage Car Rally, The Gathering festival in Inverness, Loch Ness Marathon, and the Abernethy Highland Games.
Every Saturday during March 2025 the band performed at Falcon Square, and every Monday evening in June 2025 they performed on the Inverness High Street to raise funds for The Band.
In 20-25th August 2025 selected performing members of The Band, accompanied by piping and drumming tutors and 4 parents, undertook a cultural trip to Teba in the south of Spain to participate in the Douglas Days festival. The Band’s participation in the event was greatly
received by the local community and The Band have been invited back for future Douglas Days celebrations.
The last Monday before the Christmas holidays the band members had a social event instead of the usual practice - this was at the Innoflate bowling alley.
Recruitment to the membership
Members of the band are recruited through school piping and drumming tutors and word of mouth.
Recruitment to the band committee
All parents/carers of band members are invited to the AGM and all parents/carers are invited to volunteer to be part of the committee. Office bearers were nominated and seconded according to the constitution. In the case where more than one person volunteered to a role, this would go to a casting vote.
Band Membership
43 young people registered as members, with attendance each week between 31-41 young people. Youth members are aged between primary school age up to (and including) age 24.
Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG)
From April 2025 it became a legal requirement for all the band tutors and committee members to be registered with Disclosure Scotland Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. There was a 2 month grace period to allow time for everyone to become registered. The Band designated PVG signatory is Bridie Barnett, and all tutors (9) and all committee members (8) have been registered.
