Thetrusteespresenttheirreportwiththefinancialstatementsofthecharityfortheyearended31March2025. The
trusteeshaveadoptedtheprovisionsofAccountingandReportingbyCharities:StatementofRecommended Practice
applicabletocharitiespreparingtheiraccountsinaccordancewiththeFinancialReportingStandardapplicableinthe UK
and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Objectives and aims
The objects of the Trust are to advance the education of the public and in furtherance thereof:-
a)toextendappreciationofthehistoryofScottishislandsintheirwidercontextthroughtalks,conferences, visits,
publications, education and research;
b) to maintain and extend community contact;
c)toinitiateanddeveloplinkswithotherorganisationsandindividualshavingsimilaraimsandinterests,in particular
local history societies in the Outer Hebrides;
d) to establish and promote links with other Celtic and Nordic areas, and to encourage comparative studies;
e)topromoteuseofcollectionsbylocalandotherpeopleforthepurposesofeducation,researchandthe sustainable
development of Highland and Island areas.
ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
Charitable activities
ThiswasafurtheryearofrecoveryfortheTrustafteraleanspell.Wepublished5booksandorganised10events in
2024, excluding book launches, including a well-attended conference in Tiree.
WeweresuccessfulinraisingfundsforaFull-TimeEquivalentstaffpost,butfollowinginterviewsweappointed 3
part-time staff, all contracted to work 14 hours a week (so a little more than 1 FTE).
Internal and external factors
Thecharityispartiallydependentuponthecontinuingsupportofpublicfundingagenciestoassistintheongoing delivery
of the aims and objectives of the organisation.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Principal funding sources
TheTrustisdependentongrants,donations,membershipfees,booksales,eventsandprojectsincometofund its
operationalcosts.Fulldetailsofthecharity'sprincipalfundingsourcesareincludedinthenotestothe financial
statements.
Investment policy and objectives
Thecharity'sreservesaremaintainedinbankaccountsasthecurrentlevelsofreservesarerequiredtomeetthe Trust's
short-term operational requirements.
Reserves policy
Thegeneralfundrepresentstheunrestrictedfundsfrompastoperatingresults.Italsorepresentsthefreereservesof the
charity.Thetrusteeshaveexaminedthecharity'srequirementsinlightofthemainriskstothecharityandconsider that
ninemonthsoperatingexpenditure,whichcurrentlyequatestoapproximately£25,000,shouldbeheldin unrestricted
reserves.Accordinglythetrusteesconsiderthattheleveloffreereservesheldat31March2025issufficienttomeet the
charity'soperationalrequirementsgiventheongoingassistancebeingreceivedfrompublicfundingagencies.Funds are
also raised for specific projects as required.
Duringtheyearthecharity'sincomeexceededexpenditureresultinginnetincomeof£42,275fortheperiod(2024- net
incomeof£17,048).Thisrepresentsanincreaseof£32,270inunrestrictedfundsandanincreaseof£10,005in restricted
funds. Unrestricted reserves has as a result increased to £57,032 and restricted reserves increased to £20,781.
FUTURE PLANS
TheTrustplanstoupdateits5-yearbusinessplanduring2025asabasisforfurtherfundraisingandincreased activity
during the period ahead.

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Governing document
TheTrustisanunincorporatedcharityregisteredinScotlandandisoperatedunderthetermsofitsconstitution. The
Trust was registered as a charity on 28 December 2001 and was launched in 2002.
Recruitment and appointment of new trustees
ThemanagementoftheTrustistheresponsibilityofthetrusteeswhoareelectedorre-electedunderthetermsof the
constitutionbythemembersoftheTrustattheAnnualGeneralMeeting.ThetrusteescompriseaChairman, Vice
Chairman,SecretaryandTreasurerbasedintheWesternIslesanduptotwelveothertrustees,ofwhichatleast six
shouldbebasedintheWesternIsles.Trusteesholdofficeforaperiodofthreeyearsfollowingelection.Onethirdof the
trustees retire by rotation at each Annual General Meeting but are eligible for re-election.
Organisational structure
Thetrusteesmanagetheaffairsofthecharitythroughregularmeetings.Thetrusteesareheavilyinvolvedintheday to
day operations of the charity.
Induction and training of new trustees
Thetrusteesarealsocharitytrusteesforthepurposesofcharitylaw.Thecharityundertakestrainingfortrustees to
ensure awareness and understanding of:-

the responsibilities of trustees;
-
the organisational structure of the charity;
-
the financial position of the charity; and
-
the future plans and objectives of the charity.
Wider network
Thecharityhasestablishedlinkswithotherorganisationsandagenciestofostertheaimsandobjectivesof the
organisation.

Full details of related party transactions are included in the notes to the financial statements.
Risk management
Thetrusteeshaveadutytoidentifyandreviewtheriskstowhichthecharityisexposedandtoensure appropriate
controls are in place to provide reasonable assurance against fraud and error.
Thetrusteeshaveconsideredthemajorriskstowhichthecharityisexposed,inparticularthefundingofthe operations
of the charity, and are satisfied that measures are in place to mitigate exposure to those risks.

I report on the accounts for the year ended 31 March 2025 set out on pages five to thirteen.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
Thecharity'strusteesareresponsibleforthepreparationoftheaccountsinaccordancewiththetermsofthe Charities
andTrusteeInvestment(Scotland)Act2005andtheCharitiesAccounts(Scotland)Regulations2006(asamended). The
charity'strusteesconsiderthattheauditrequirementofRegulation10(1)(a)to(c)oftheAccountsRegulationsdoes not
apply.ItismyresponsibilitytoexaminetheaccountsasrequiredunderSection44(1)(c)oftheActandtostate whether
particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of the independent examiner's report
MyexaminationwascarriedoutinaccordancewithRegulation11oftheCharitiesAccounts(Scotland)Regulations 2006.
Anexaminationincludesareviewoftheaccountingrecordskeptbythecharityandacomparisonofthe accounts
presentedwiththoserecords.Italsoincludesconsiderationofanyunusualitemsordisclosuresintheaccounts, and
seekingexplanationsfromyouastrusteesconcerninganysuchmatters.Theproceduresundertakendonotprovide all
theevidencethatwouldberequiredinanaudit,andconsequentlyIdonotexpressanauditopinionontheviewgiven by
the accounts.
Independent examiner's statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention :

(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements
-
to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations; and
-
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with Regulation 8 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations
have not been met; or
(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES
Basis of preparing the financial statements
Thefinancialstatementsofthecharity,whichisapublicbenefitentityunderFRS102,havebeenprepared in
accordancewiththeCharitiesSORP(FRS102)'AccountingandReportingbyCharities:Statement of
RecommendedPracticeapplicabletocharitiespreparingtheiraccountsinaccordancewiththeFinancial Reporting
StandardapplicableintheUKandRepublicofIreland(FRS102)(effective1January2019)',Financial Reporting
Standard102'TheFinancialReportingStandardapplicableintheUKandRepublicofIreland'andthe Charities
andTrusteeInvestment(Scotland)Act2005.Thefinancialstatementshavebeenpreparedunderthe historical
cost convention.
The financial statements are prepared in sterling which is the functional currency of the charity.
Going concern
Thetrusteeshaveassessedthecharity'sabilitytocontinueasagoingconcernanddonotconsiderthereto be
any material uncertainties about the charity's ability to continue as a going concern.
Financial reporting standard 102 - reduced disclosure exemptions
Thecharityhastakenadvantageofthefollowingdisclosureexemptioninpreparingthesefinancialstatements, as
permitted by FRS 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland':
the requirements of Section 7 Statement of Cash Flows.
Critical accounting judgements and key sources of estimation uncertainty
Intheapplicationofthecharity'saccountingpolicies,thetrusteesarerequiredtomakejudgements, estimates
and assumptions that affect the amounts reported for assets, liabilities, income and expenditure.
Theestimatesandassociatedassumptionsarebasedonhistoricalexperienceandotherfactorsthat are
considered to be relevant. Actual results may differ from these estimates.
Theestimatesandassumptionsarereviewedonanongoingbasis.Revisionstoaccountingestimates are
recognised in the period in which the estimate is revised and in future periods should it affect future periods.
Theestimatesandassumptionswhichcarryahigherdegreeofriskofcausingamaterialadjustmentto the
carrying amount of assets and liabilities are as follows:
Useful economic lives of tangible fixed assets
Theannualdepreciationchargefortangiblefixedassetsissensitivetochangesintheestimateduseful economic
livesandresidualvaluesoftheassets.Theyareamendedwhennecessarytoreflectcurrentestimates, future
investment,economicutilisationandthephysicalconditionoftheassets.Seenote9fordetailsofthevalues of
tangible fixed assets.
Income
AllincomeisrecognisedintheStatementofFinancialActivitiesoncethecharityhasentitlementtothe income,
thereissufficientcertaintyofreceiptandsoitisprobablethattheincomewillbereceived,andtheamount of
incomereceivablecanbemeasuredreliably.Incomereceivedinadvanceisdeferreduntilthecriteriafor income
recognition are met.
Grantsgeneratedtosupporttheobjectsofthecharityandwithoutfurtherspecifiedpurposearetakento the
StatementofFinancialActivitiesinthatperiod.Grantsreceivedwhicharerelatedtocapitalexpenditureorare for
aspecifiedpurposearetransferredtoRestrictedFundsandareutilisedtofundthefuturedepreciationof the
related capital expenditure or fund the costs relating to the specified purpose.

Expenditure
Liabilitiesarerecognisedasexpenditureassoonasthereisalegalorconstructiveobligationcommitting the
charitytothatexpenditure,itisprobablethatatransferofeconomicbenefitswillberequiredinsettlement and
theamountoftheobligationcanbemeasuredreliably.Expenditureisaccountedforonanaccrualsbasisand has
beenclassifiedunderheadingsthataggregateallcostrelatedtothecategory.Wherecostscannotbe directly
attributedtoparticularheadingstheyhavebeenallocatedtoactivitiesonabasisconsistentwiththeuse of
resources.ExpenditureincludesanyVATwhichcannotbefullyrecovered,andisreportedaspartof the
expenditure to which it relates.
Raising funds
Costsofgeneratingfundscomprisethecostsassociatedwithattractingvoluntaryincomeandthecosts of
fundraising activities.
Charitable activities
Charitableexpenditurecomprisesthosecostsincurredbythecharityinthedeliveryofitsobjectsandactivities. It
includesbothcoststhatcanbeallocateddirectlytosuchactivitiesandthosecostsofanindirectnature necessary
to support them. The allocation of direct and support costs are analysed in the notes to the financial statements.
Governance costs
Governancecostsincludethosecostsassociatedwithmeetingtheconstitutionalandstatutoryrequirements of
the charity and include accountancy fees and costs linked to the strategic management of the charity.
Allocation and apportionment of costs
AllcostsareallocatedbetweentheexpenditurecategoriesoftheStatementofFinancialActivitiesona basis
designedtoreflecttheuseoftheresource.Costsrelatingtoaparticularactivityareallocateddirectly,others are
apportioned on an appropriate basis e.g. estimated usage.
Tangible fixed assets
Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life.
Fixtures and fittings- 20% on cost
Office equipment- 25% on cost
Tangiblefixedassetsarestatedatcostlessaccumulateddepreciation.Thecostsofminoradditionsor those
costing below £100 are not capitalised.
Stocks
Stocksarevaluedatthelowerofcostandnetrealisablevalue,aftermakingdueallowanceforobsoleteand slow
moving items.
Taxation
The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.
Fund accounting
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Designated funds are unrestricted funds earmarked by the trustees for particular purposes.
Restrictedfundscanonlybeusedforparticularrestrictedpurposeswithintheobjectsofthecharity. Restrictions
arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.
Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.
Pension costs and other post-retirement benefits
Thecharityoperatesadefinedcontributionpensionscheme.Contributionspayabletothecharity's pension
scheme are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities in the period to which they relate.
